Organizing data in arable farming : towards an ontology of processing potato

Arable farmers and their suppliers, consultants and procurers are increasingly dealing with gathering and processing of large amounts of data. Data sources are related to mandatory and voluntary registration (certification, tracing and tracking, quality control). Besides data collected for registration purposes, decision support systems for strategic, tactical and operational tasks yield enormous amounts of mainly digital information. Data of similar nature but with often varying definitions are collected and processed separately for different purposes. This paper describes for an important arable crop - the processing potato - which data requirements and flows exist at present and how they could possibly be described in a unifying ontology. An ontology describes the concepts, attributes and relations in a specific knowledge domain using a standardized representation language. Important concepts in this domain are for example crop, parcel, soil, treatment and farm. The ontology - once elaborated - will reduce the overlap between information models and helps to overcome the problem of data definition and representation. It is a key element for the development of systems that can automatically learn either with the help of expert knowledge or through adequate numerical techniques

Tussenrapportage Kwaliteit Verse Vis in de Keten

In de verse vis keten van visser tot en met consument is behoefte aan inzicht in de kwaliteit en veiligheid van de visproducten. Dit inzicht kan worden verkregen door het uitwisselen van essentiële informatie tussen de betreffende schakels. De noodzaak voor deze informatie-vergaring en - uitwisseling wordt door de actoren in de keten onderschreven. Er zijn reeds initiatieven gestart en modellen ontwikkeld om deze wens gestalte te geven. Op Europees niveau is een tweetal Concerted Action projecten geïnitieerd genaamd Fish Quality Labelling and Monitoring (CA-FQLM) en TRACEFISH, waarbij diverse visonderzoeksinstituten en visketen actoren samenwerken over de invoering van traceerbare kwaliteitsindices van verse vis.Binnen deze inventarisatie ligt het accent op de vissoort schol (Pleuronectes platessa), één van de belangrijkste vissoorten voor de Nederlandse verse vis sector. De aldus vergaarde kennis en praktijkervaring kan ook gebruikt worden voor andere vissoorten

Met het aantreden van het kabinet Balkenende II heeft LNV een nieuwe naam: Landbouw, Natuur en Voedselkwaliteit. Om zich op deze nieuwe rol te oriënteren heeft LNV in 2005 een Strategische Dialoog Voedselkwaliteit georganiseerd. The unacknowledged legacy

This paper presents a critical discussion of the treatment of mimetic art, and particularly poetry and the theatre, in the work of the Athenian philosopher Plato (427-347 BC). It centres on Plato's discussion of the corrupting powers of the arts in the Republic, and the implications that his fierce attack on poetry and theatre have for his construction of the ideal polity. The legacy of Platonic ideas in later elaborations of the corrupting power of the arts is discussed. Furthermore, the paper investigates the relationship between current debates on cultural policy and the Platonic idea that the transformative powers of the arts ought to be harnessed by the state to promote a just society. The conclusion thus reached is that “instrumental cultural policy”, rather then being a modern invention, was in fact first theorized precisely in Plato's Republic

The Potato Ontology: Delimitation of the Domain, Modelling Concepts, and Prospects of Performance.

The ever increasing amount of data gathered by more growers in more years offers possibilities to add value. Therefore a common and controlled vocabulary of the potato domain that describes concepts, attributes, and the relations between them in a formal way using a standardised knowledge representation is being developed: a potato ontology. The advantage is that all possible stakeholders will be able to understand the data expressed by this ontology and that software applications can process them automatically. This paper describes the procedures to establish such an ontology where competency questions formulated by stakeholders and potential users take a central position. Toezicht op controle diervoeding

Studies geven aan dat het onder voorwaarden mogelijk is om privaatrechtelijke initiatieven op het gebied van systematische kwaliteitsbewaking te gebruiken voor een gerichter overheidstoezicht en een beperking van de (administratieve) lasten, ofwel Toezicht op Controle (ToC).
