    Endolimax nana and urticaria

    Get PDF
Endolimax nana is a commensal protozoan of the colon. We report a case of chronic urticaria associated with E. nana in a 34-year-old Italian woman. The patient suffered from abdominal pain, diarrhoea and weight loss. The disease appeared after a trip to Vietnam. Laboratory examinations showed mild blood eosinophilia. Three coproparasitological examinations were positive for cysts of E. nana. The patient was successfully treated with two courses of metronidazole (2 g/day for 10 days each). No antihistamines were used. Three coproparasitological examinations, carried out at the end of the therapy, were negative. Follow up (six months) was negative. E. nana can be responsible for very rare cases of abdominal pain, diarrhoea, polyarthritis and urticaria

Orf (ecthyma contagiosum) is an infection of the skin caused by a DNA virus belonging to the genus Parapoxvirus. We recently observed 7 cases of orf in Muslim men living in the metropolitan area of Milan, Italy, who acquired the infection after the Feast of Sacrific

Hybrid rescue technique after failure of a standard multibranched stent graft

    Get PDF
A 78-year-old woman presented with type IIIC and IIID endoleaks after endovascular treatment for a thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysm. Mating between the ruptured segments of superior mesenteric artery stent graft was performed. After failed attempts at relining the right renal artery stent graft, a hybrid approach was used to connect the side branch to the target vessel: a stent graft was deployed into the side branch of the main graft and it was temporarily occluded with a balloon. After opening the sac, a stent graft was deployed into the right renal artery and the two stent grafts were connected with a running suture. Follow-up examination performed 1 month postoperatively by computed tomography imaging confirmed the effectiveness of this treatment

Three cases of cutaneous myiasis caused by Cordylobia rodhaini

    Get PDF
Cordylobia sp. is a fly belonging to the Calliphoridae family. Three species of Cordylobia are known: C. anthropophaga, C. rodhaini and C. ruandae. The C. rodhaini Gedoelst 1909 lives in Sub-Saharan Africa, especially in rain forest areas. Usual hosts are rodents and antelopes. Humans are accidentally infested. Myiasis caused by C. rodhaini has been very rarely reported in the literature. We present three cases of C. rodhaini myiasis acquired in Ethiopia and Uganda

    Amiodarone-induced rosacea

    Get PDF
Amiodarone is an anti-arrhythmic agent. Its most common cutaneous side effects are photosensitivity and hyperpigmentation. Furthermore, amiodarone rarely causes allergic rash, exfoliative dermatitis, toxic epidermal necrolysis, leucocytoclastic vasculitis, pseudoporphyria, linear IgA bullous dermatosis, vegetating iododerma and myxoedema. An increased susceptibility to the development of basal cell carcinomas was also reported. Only one case of rosacea due to amiodarone was reported so far. We describe a case of papulo-pustular rosacea which appeared four months after the beginning of the therapy with amiodarone. The disease did not improve despite several topical and oral therapies. However, it improved within six weeks after amiodarone discontinuation and completely cleared up within three months. Follow-up at one year was negative

An Overview of The Role of Tumor Necrosis Factor-Alpha in Epileptogenesis and Its Terapeutic Implications

    Get PDF
The complex association between neuroinflammation and seizures has been widely investigated in recent years. As mediators of inflammatory response, cytokines like tumor necrosis factor-a (TNF-α) are potential therapeutic targets for epileptic disorders. TNF-α is a pleiotropic cytokine with a controversial role in epileptogenesis, seemingly capable to both favor the genesis of seizures and elicit neuromodulatory responses. Anti-TNF agents are a group of monoclonal antibodies engineered to inhibit the response to this cytokine for antinflammatory purposes. The clinical experience of the use of these drugs in neurological conditions like multiple sclerosis showed controversial results. Evidence in favor of the employment of anti-TNF agents for the treatment of epilepsy are still limited to certain forms of disorders, notably Rasmussen encephalitis, and in carefully selected patients
