Isaiah and the formation of the canon since the eighth century before ChristThe canonisation of Isaiah’s words was a complicated process in which different phenomena played a role. Due to politico-historical reasons Jerusalem receivedsymbolic meaning in the Isaiah tradition. Isaiah himself started a prophetic tradition in which Jerusalem was linked to a growing Zion tradition and a monotheising theology of the universal power of God. This tradition became canonical and served as paradigm for understanding the fate of Jerusalem as expression of the sovereign power of God to chastise as well as redeem

Integrated reservoir eutrophication remediation plan: Hartbeespoort dam

    Get PDF
The Hartbeespoort Dam is situated in a highly developed area in South Africa. Due to high nutrient loads in the dam unpleasant and even hazardous conditions occur frequently. An integrated phased management and remediation plan has been developed and is being executed at the dam. The plan provides for short to long-term actions relating to the water quality of the incoming water, and limnology of and sediments in the dam. Actions include enhanced wastewater treatment at sewage plants, in-stream treatment, continued regular monitoring, the bio-manipulation of the fish community for removal of algae and the initiation of community based fisheries. Preliminary analysis indicates that a start-up cost of about R27.3 million and annual costs of about R9.3 million are required. These costs do not include actions that could be taken at municipal wastewater treatment plants. The development and implementation of the plan are serving as case studies for various projects in the Department of Water Affairs and Forestry

Pitch and industry guidelines play an important role in awarding advertising agency contracts, but agencies must take into account that not all advertisers will adhere to these guidelines. The exploratory research study on which this article reports provides insight into the appointment process and selection criteria applied during the appointment of advertising agencies. This article examines the views of 116 senior marketing executives in South Africa to determine typical decision processes followed when advertising agencies are appointed. Consideration is also given to the structural arrangements in place, the composition and size of buying centres, switching barriers that make it more diffi cult or costly for advertisers to change agencies and selection criteria used to appoint advertising agencies. Data were obtained by means of structured questionnaires administered via a web-based survey. The findings provide advertisers with insights into procurement decisions and selection criteria and can also provide valuable insight to agencies with regard to buying decision approaches taken by advertisers. Insight into the size and composition of buying centres adds to agencies’ understanding of who to target during customer relationship-building initiatives. From an academic perspective, this research off ers a better understanding of the organisational buying process and the importance of selection criteria within the South African context

Sport organisations face escalating performance pressures from various stakeholders, which places increasing demands on the governance structures of such organisations. However, little research has been undertaken to understand sport governance of national sports organisations within the African context. This paper will focus on the roles and structures of the boards of African national cricket organisations to enhance the understanding of board involvement in strategic planning and implementation. This study used a sequential mixed method design to gather empirical data from 23 cricket associations affiliated to the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) African Cricket Association (ACA). The research reports on the composition of the boards of African cricket organisations as well as the perceived roles and responsibilities of boards in the strategic planning process and implementation thereof. It explores the perceived influence of the ICC on the governance compliance of African National Cricket organisations, and lastly indicates the strategic management activities performed by such boards.Key words: governance, national sport organisations, boards, strategic managemen

Background. COVID-19 was recognised as a global pandemic on 11 March 2020. In South Africa (SA), a nationwide lockdown was implemented at midnight on 26 March to prepare for the predicted surge and slow the spread of the virus.Objectives. To compare the volume and type of presentations of trauma secondary to interpersonal violence and road traffic collisions (RTCs) during two 5-month periods, from February to June 2019 and 2020, in the emergency department (ED) of an academic tertiary hospital in Gauteng Province, SA. In 2020, February - June included the lockdown period.Methods. An observational retrospective audit of the patient register at the Helen Joseph Hospital ED was conducted, comparing the number of trauma presentations secondary to interpersonal violence (assaults with gunshot wounds, general assaults including mob assaults, assaults with stab wounds) and RTC presentations between February and June 2019 and 2020.Results. A total of 4 300 trauma presentations secondary to interpersonal violence and RTCs were noted in the 5-month period February - June 2019, as opposed to 3 239 presentations in February - June 2020 (25% decline). A 40% decline in the number of RTCs, from 1 704 in February - June 2019 to 1 026 in the corresponding period for 2020, was noted and found to be statistically significant (p=0.03). Declines in the volume of trauma cases secondary to interpersonal violence and of overall trauma cases were only directional in favour of 2020, but not statistically significant.Conclusions. The volume of trauma presentations secondary to interpersonal violence and RTCs in the Helen Joseph Hospital ED decreased during the lockdown period. The decline in the volume of RTCs was statistically significant, but declines in the volume of trauma presentations secondary to interpersonal violence and in the volume of overall trauma presentations were not

Old Testament scholarship in the Nederduitsch Hervormde Kerk Old Testament scholarship in the Nederduitsch Hervormde Kerk is characterized by three factors. The study of Semitic languages influences Old Testament scholarship to be a literary-historical, communication-orientated study of the Old Testament. The reformationorientated dialectical theology paradigm directs its results towards a pluriform existential relationship between God and man. In the framework of the university Old Testament scholarship stands in dialogue with the other theological disciplines and all the other sciences, presenting relevant values to the community
