Herbal medicine, the backbone of traditional medicine in many countries have played an important role in curing the diseases of humans since ancient time. Medicinal plants are great source of bioactive compounds and chemical structures that have potential beneficial effects. The present review compiles information on ethnopharmacologically useful information and pharmacological properties of Ocimum sanctum. Ocimum sanctum (OS) has many medicinal properties like antioxidant, antidiabetic, antiulcer, anticancer, antibacterial, antifungal and other. The phytochemicals compounds of Ocimum, alkaloids, flavonoids, phenolics, essential oils, tannins and saponins play an important role in herbal medicine. Bioactive compounds of Ocimum responsible for its various medicinal properties and their effects at the molecular level need to be investigated in more detail. Furthermore, pharmacological properties of bioactive compounds in Ocimum sanctum are required to confirm the ethnomedicinal claims of Ocimum sanctum for pharmaceutical therapeutic applications

Novel ferromagnetic-dielectric particulate composites of Ni0.5Zn0.5Fe1.95O4−ή (NZF) and PbZr0.52Ti0.48O3 (PZT) were prepared by conventional ceramic method. The presence of two phases in composites was confirmed by XRD technique. The variations of dielectric constant () with frequency in the range of 100 kHz–1 MHz at room temperature and also with temperature at three different frequencies (50 kHz, 100 kHz, and 500 kHz) were studied. Detailed studies on the dielectric properties were done confirming that the magnetoelectric interaction between the constituent phases may result in various anomalies in the dielectric behaviour of the composites. It is proposed that interfaces play an important role in the dielectric properties, causing space charge effects and Maxwell-Wagner relaxation, particularly at low frequencies and high temperatures. The piezoelectric d33 constant was studied at room temperature, and the d33 constant value decreased with ferrite content. Magnetic properties like B-H loops traces were studied to understand the saturation magnetic (Ms) and magnetic moment () of the present particulate composites. The magnetoelectric (ME) output was measured by varying dc bias magnetic field. A large ME output signal of 2780 mV/cm Oe was observed in the composite having 50% ferrite. The temperature variation of longitudinal modulus (L) and internal friction (Q−1) of these particulate composites at 104 kHz was studied in the temperature range 30°C–420°C by the composite oscillator technique. Longitudinal modulus showed a sharp minimum, and internal friction exhibits a sharp peak at ferroelectric-paraelectric phase transition. These ferroelectric-dielectric particulate composites were prepared with a view to using them as ME sensors and transducers

    Nanocrystalline Pb(Zr 0.52

Nanocrystalline powders of the composition Pb(Zr0.52Ti0.48)O3 were obtained by Mechanical alloying (high-energy ball milling). X-ray diffraction studies show that these compounds are completely into the perovskite phase. Detailed studies of electrical and mechanical properties of PZT as a function of temperature (and frequency) showed the high permittivity of 20653 at Curie transition temperature. Temperature variation of longitudinal modulus and internal friction of these ceramics at 104 kHz frequency were studied in the wide temperature range of 30∘C–420∘C. The internal friction measurements showed sharp stress induced relaxation peaks in the present composition corresponding to those temperatures where the minima were noticed in temperature variation of longitudinal modulus behavior. This dielectric and internal friction behaviour was explained in the light of polaron hopping mechanism and structural phase transitions in the present piezoelectric compositions

Sustainable environmental geotechnics practices for a green economy

The revitalisation of the global economy after the Covid-19 era presents environmental geotechnics with the opportunity to reinforce the need for a change in paradigm towards a green, circular economy and to promote aggressively the use and development of sustainable technologies and management practices. This paper aims to assist in this effort by concentrating on several thematic areas where sustainability solutions and future improvements are sought. These include the re-entry of construction and demolition of wastes, excavated materials, industrial wastes and marine sediments into the production cycle and the reuse of existing foundations. Despite the recent trend in advanced countries towards recycling and waste-to-energy thermal treatment, landfills still constitute the most common municipal solid waste management practice, especially in low-and-middle-income countries, and technological solutions to improve their environmental footprint are hereby presented. At the same time, remediation solutions are required to address the multitude of contaminated sites worldwide. Advanced developments that incorporate environmental, economic and social dimensions are expounded by the authors, together with sustainable ground improvement solutions for infrastructure projects conducted in soft and weak soils. The topic of thermo-active geostructures concludes this paper, where, apart from their infrastructure utility, these structures have the potential to contribute to the renewable energy source.Published versionThe second author would like to acknowledge the support of the Office of the Associate Provost for Research and Academic Development at Abu Dhabi University, UAE through grant19300540

Machinability of Aluminum Metal Matrix Composite Reinforced with In-Situ Ceramic Composite Developed from Mines Waste Colliery Shale

In the present investigation, aluminum metal-matrix composite (AMC) is developed using a novel in-situ ceramic composite, converted from waste colliery shale (CS) material by heat treating in a plasma reactor under neutral atmosphere. The developed AMC has shown improved mechanical properties as compared to Al-Al2O3 and Al-Al2O3-SiC composites. The present study encompasses the machinability of the developed AMC as well as the other two composites. The variables like radial force, feed force, cutting force, power consumption, and surface roughness are taken as index for machinability. The developed AMC has shown better machinability than the other two composites. The presence of free carbon as graphite in the developed AMC has helped to improve the machinabilty. The machinability results have been corroborated by surface roughness measurement on the machined surfaces of the sample

Effect of Hot Working on Structure and Tribological Properties of Aluminium Reinforced with Aluminium Oxide Particulates

Al-Al2O3 (18%) composite was prepared by stir-cast melt technique. The microstructures showed uniform distribution of particulates, dispersed in the matrix. There exists discontinuity (similar to 0.25 mu m) in the interface between particulates and matrix. The composite was hot forged. Hot working resulted in fine recrystallized microstructure with particulates dispersed along grain boundaries. Formation of pancake microstructure with some inhomogeneity in the microstructure along three faces of the forged composite was observed. The discontinuity across the interface between Al-Al2O3 was reduced to 0.125 mu m after forging. The as-cast and forged Al-Al2O3 composites showed higher wear resistance than pure Al. In lubricant media, there was no significant wear observed for either the as-cast or forged composite, whereas Al had shown higher wear at 50 N load
