    In this study, a phytochemical analysis was performed, for the first time, on Iris marsica I. Ricci e Colas. In particular, the attention was focused on the constituents of the roots. Twenty-one compounds were isolated by column chromatography and were analyzed/identified by NMR spectroscopy and mass spectrometry. They all own chemotaxonomic, ethno-pharmacological and nutraceutical relevance which allowed us to provide a phytochemical rationale, for the correct botanical classification of this species, for the employment of its roots in folk medicine like for all the other species belonging to the Iris genus and, lastly, for their further uses as food with important healthy benefits.     Anisotropic Grid Adaptation for Multiple Aerodynamic Outputs

    Anisotropic grid–adaptive strategies are presented for viscous flow simulations in which the accurate prediction of multiple aerodynamic outputs (such as the lift, drag, and moment coefficients) is required from a single adaptive solution. The underlying adaptive procedure is based on a merging of adjoint error estimation and Hessian-based anisotropic grid adaptation. Airfoil test cases are presented to demonstrate the various adaptive strategies including a single element airfoil at cruise conditions and a multi-element airfoil in high-lift configuration with flow separation. Numerical results indicate that the lift, drag and moment coefficients are accurately predicted by all of the output–based strategies considered, although slightly better accuracy is obtained in the output(s) for which a particular strategy is specifically designed. Furthermore, the output-based strategies are all shown to be significantly more efficient than pure Hessian-based adaptation in terms of output accuracy for a given grid size

    The surface accessibility of α-bungarotoxin monitored by a novel paramagnetic probe

    The surface accessibility of {alpha}-bungarotoxin has been investigated by using Gd2L7, a newly designed paramagnetic NMR probe. Signal attenuations induced by Gd2L7 on {alpha}-bungarotoxin C{alpha}H peaks of 1H-13C HSQC spectra have been analyzed and compared with the ones previously obtained in the presence of GdDTPA-BMA. In spite of the different molecular size and shape, for the two probes a common pathway of approach to the {alpha}-bungarotoxin surface can be observed with an equally enhanced access of both GdDTPA-BMA and Gd2L7 towards the protein surface side where the binding site is located. Molecular dynamics simulations suggest that protein backbone flexibility and surface hydration contribute to the observed preferential approach of both gadolinium complexes specifically to the part of the {alpha}-bungarotoxin surface which is involved in the interaction with its physiological target, the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor

    Inkjet printing of surfactant solutions onto thin moving porous media

    We have studied the combined imbibition and evaporation of surfactant solutions into thin porous media by means of experiments and numerical simulations. Solutions of anionic and non-ionic surfactants were deposited onto moving sheets of paper by a droplet-on-demand inkjet system. Optical transmission imaging and infrared thermography were used to monitor their lateral transport and evaporation. Moreover, we propose a theoretical model based on a dual-porosity approach that accounts for moisture and surfactant transport in both the pores and the fibers of the paper sheets as well as for surfactant adsorption. The numerical simulations reproduce the experimental data qualitatively well.</p

    Spatial properties of π−π\pi-\pi conjugated network in semicrystalline polymer thin films studied by intensity x-ray cross-correlation functions

    We present results of x-ray study of spatial properties of π−π\pi-\pi conjugated networks in polymer thin films. We applied the x-ray cross-correlation analysis to x-ray scattering data from blends of poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) and gold nanoparticles. The Fourier spectra of the intensity cross-correlation functions for different films contain non-zero components of orders n=2,4n=2,4 and 66 measuring the degree of structural order in the system.Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures, Proceedings ICXOM22 Conference, 2-6 September 2013, Hamburg, German

    A case of persistent bacteraemia by Ralstonia mannitolilytica and Ralstonia pickettii in an intensive care unit

    The Ralstonia spp. genus is a group of non-fermentative, Gram-negative bacteria often resistant to many antibiotics, which are emerging as opportunistic pathogens frequently associated with infections in hospital settings. We present herein a case of combined R. pickettii and R. mannitolilytica persisting and relapsing bacteraemia, possibly caused by a septic arterial thrombosis secondary to the rupture of an internal carotid artery aneurysm. Microbiology studies showed that both Ralstonia isolates produced biofilm and carried class D oxacillinase genes. When confronted with infections caused by members of the Ralstonia genus, identification to the species level is crucial for correct clinical management, as the two species show different antibiotic susceptibility patterns

    Fractionation of a three-particle mixture by Brownian sieving hydrodynamic chromatography

    Particles ranging in size from a few nanometers (exosomes or viruses) to a few micrometers (bacteria or red blood cells) can be sorted using a size-based separation process. One of the simplest techniques is provided by hydrodynamic chromatography (HDC) which typically requires long channels to achieve adequate resolution. A new separation mechanism based on a Brownian sieving effect coupled with HDC has recently been proposed to overcome these limitations. An efficiency improvement of up to 2000 % has been predicted for a two-size mixture. The aim of this work is to study and optimize a modified geometry useful for obtaining the simultaneous separation of a three-size diluted suspension. The results suggest a significant performance improvement, up to 3000 %, over the standard HDC
