Multi-agent collaborative search : an agent-based memetic multi-objective optimization algorithm applied to space trajectory design
This article presents an algorithm for multi-objective optimization that blends together a number of heuristics. A population of agents combines heuristics that aim at exploring the search space both globally and in a neighbourhood of each agent. These heuristics are complemented with a combination of a local and global archive. The novel agent-based algorithm is tested at first on a set of standard problems and then on three specific problems in space trajectory design. Its performance is compared against a number of state-of-the-art multi-objective optimization algorithms that use the Pareto dominance as selection criterion: non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm (NSGA-II), Pareto archived evolution strategy (PAES), multiple objective particle swarm optimization (MOPSO), and multiple trajectory search (MTS). The results demonstrate that the agent-based search can identify parts of the Pareto set that the other algorithms were not able to capture. Furthermore, convergence is statistically better although the variance of the results is in some cases higher
Answering Conjunctive Queries under Updates
We consider the task of enumerating and counting answers to -ary
conjunctive queries against relational databases that may be updated by
inserting or deleting tuples. We exhibit a new notion of q-hierarchical
conjunctive queries and show that these can be maintained efficiently in the
following sense. During a linear time preprocessing phase, we can build a data
structure that enables constant delay enumeration of the query results; and
when the database is updated, we can update the data structure and restart the
enumeration phase within constant time. For the special case of self-join free
conjunctive queries we obtain a dichotomy: if a query is not q-hierarchical,
then query enumeration with sublinear delay and sublinear update time
(and arbitrary preprocessing time) is impossible.
For answering Boolean conjunctive queries and for the more general problem of
counting the number of solutions of k-ary queries we obtain complete
dichotomies: if the query's homomorphic core is q-hierarchical, then size of
the the query result can be computed in linear time and maintained with
constant update time. Otherwise, the size of the query result cannot be
maintained with sublinear update time. All our lower bounds rely on the
OMv-conjecture, a conjecture on the hardness of online matrix-vector
multiplication that has recently emerged in the field of fine-grained
complexity to characterise the hardness of dynamic problems. The lower bound
for the counting problem additionally relies on the orthogonal vectors
conjecture, which in turn is implied by the strong exponential time hypothesis.

The Memory Metal Minimal Access Cage: A New Concept in Lumbar Interbody Fusion—A Prospective, Noncomparative Study to Evaluate the Safety and Performance
Study Design/Objective. A single-centre, prospective, non-comparative study of 25 patients to evaluate the performance and safety of the Memory Metal Minimal Access Cage (MAC) in Lumbar Interbody Fusion. Summary of Background Data. Interbody fusion cages in general are designed to withstand high axial loads and in the meantime to allow ingrowth of new bone for bony fusion. In many cages the contact area with the endplate is rather large leaving a relatively small contact area for the bone graft with the adjacent host bone. MAC is constructed from the memory metal Nitinol and builds on the concept of sufficient axial support in combination with a large contact area of the graft facilitating bony ingrowth and ease in minimal access implantation due to its high deformability. Methods. Twenty five subjects with a primary diagnosis of disabling back and radicular leg pain from a single level degenerative lumbar disc underwent an interbody fusion using MAC and pedicle screws. Clinical performance was evaluated prospectively over 2 years using the Oswestry Disability Index (ODI), Short Form 36 questionnaire (SF-36) and pain visual analogue scale (VAS) scores. The interbody fusion status was assessed using conventional radiographs and CT scan. Safety of the device was studied by registration of intra- and post-operative adverse effects. Results. Clinical performance improved significantly (P < .0018), CT scan confirmed solid fusion in all 25 patients at two year follow-up. In two patients migration of the cage occurred, which was resolved uneventfully by placing a larger size at the subsequent revision. Conclusions. We conclude that the Memory Metal Minimal Access Cage (MAC) resulted in 100% solid fusions in 2 years and proved to be safe, although two patients required revision surgery in order to achieve solid fusion
Varieties and Pre Harvesting Treatment for Growing Polish Canola (Brassica rapa L.) in Interior Alaska
Abstract Barley has been a mono cereal crop grown in the Delta Junction area of Alaska since 1970s. A rotational crop is needed for weed control and conservation tillage for sustainable crop production. Due to short growing season constrains, canola when used as a rotational crop currently resulted low marketability because of high green seed content (>2%). The objective of this research is to determine if glyphosate when used as a desiccating chemical could promote early maturity and reduce green seed content of canola. Four Polish canola cultivars were treated with direct combine (as a control), pushing (to stop growth) and desiccating in two locations in Alaska USA in a randomized complete block design with four replicates from 2007 to 2009. Glyphosate was sprayed, and pushing was conducted around August 15 each year. Results showed that 'Hysin 110' treated by glyphosate consistently had ≤ 2% green seed content in three years in contrast with 'Reward' despite a wide variation of weather conditions. The growing degree days were dramatically different among the three years, with 2009 close to the 29-year norm, 2008 was lower and 2007 was higher than the norm. No residual glyphosate was found in the seeds from the desiccating treatment. In conclusion, desiccating treatment together with a good short growing season Polish canola cultivar can make canola grown as a rotational crop in Alaska's short growing season conditions
The Insular Taste Cortex Contributes to Odor Quality Coding
Despite distinct peripheral and central pathways, stimulation of both the olfactory and the gustatory systems may give rise to the sensation of sweetness. Whether there is a common central mechanism producing sweet quality sensations or two discrete mechanisms associated independently with gustatory and olfactory stimuli is currently unknown. Here we used fMRI to determine whether odor sweetness is represented in the piriform olfactory cortex, which is thought to code odor quality, or in the insular taste cortex, which is thought to code taste quality. Fifteen participants sampled two concentrations of a pure sweet taste (sucrose), two sweet food odors (chocolate and strawberry), and two sweet floral odors (lilac and rose). Replicating prior work we found that olfactory stimulation activated the piriform, orbitofrontal and insular cortices. Of these regions, only the insula also responded to sweet taste. More importantly, the magnitude of the response to the food odors, but not to the non-food odors, in this region of insula was positively correlated with odor sweetness rating. These findings demonstrate that insular taste cortex contributes to odor quality coding by representing the taste-like aspects of food odors. Since the effect was specific to the food odors, and only food odors are experienced with taste, we suggest this common central mechanism develops as a function of experiencing flavors
Sex pheromone signal and stability covary with fitness
If sexual signals are costly, covariance between signal expression and fitness is expected. Signal–fitness covariance is important, because it can contribute to the maintenance of genetic variation in signals that are under natural or sexual selection. Chemical signals, such as female sex pheromones in moths, have traditionally been assumed to be species-recognition signals, but their relationship with fitness is unclear. Here, we test whether chemical, conspecific mate finding signals covary with fitness in the moth Heliothis subflexa. Additionally, as moth signals are synthesized de novo every night, the maintenance of the signal can be costly. Therefore, we also hypothesized that fitness covaries with signal stability (i.e. lack of temporal intra-individual variation). We measured among- and within-individual variation in pheromone characteristics as well as fecundity, fertility and lifespan in two independent groups that differed in the time in between two pheromone samples. In both groups, we found fitness to be correlated with pheromone amount, composition and stability, supporting both our hypotheses. This study is, to our knowledge, the first to report a correlation between fitness and sex pheromone composition in moths, supporting evidence of condition-dependence and highlighting how signal–fitness covariance may contribute to heritable variation in chemical signals both among and within individuals

Amorphous carbon film deposition on inner surface of tubes using atmospheric pressure pulsed filamentary plasma source
Uniform amorphous carbon film is deposited on the inner surface of quartz
tube having the inner diameter of 6 mm and the outer diameter of 8 mm. A pulsed
filamentary plasma source is used for the deposition. Long plasma filaments (~
140 mm) as a positive discharge are generated inside the tube in argon with
methane admixture. FTIR-ATR, XRD, SEM, LSM and XPS analyses give the conclusion
that deposited film is amorphous composed of non-hydrogenated sp2 carbon and
hydrogenated sp3 carbon. Plasma is characterized using optical emission
spectroscopy, voltage-current measurement, microphotography and numerical
simulation. On the basis of observed plasma parameters, the kinetics of the
film deposition process is discussed
