    Impact of a Nurse Residency Program On First-Year Retention Rates for New Graduate Nurses

    The purpose of this DNP Capstone Project was to explore if participation in a Nurse Residency Program would positively impact the retention rate of the new graduate nurse population, during the initial year of clinical practice in the academic medical center care setting. The goals of the project were to successfully implement a Nurse Residency Program in the academic medical center practice setting, to measure participant satisfaction with the level of support the program would provide during the initial year of practice, and increase the first year retention rate for this population of nurses. This was accomplished by examining data from Human Resources for retention and by analyzing the responses of a summative evaluation provided to the retained RNs, one year post-program completion. Results for the initial Nurse Residency Program participants demonstrated a 93.33% retention rate for this population of new graduate RNs. Quantitative analysis of the survey responses demonstrated a close association between the perceived support experienced by these clinicians during their Residency program participation and the retention of these nurses, one year post-program completion

    Structure and bonding of halonium compounds

    The geometrical parameters and the bonding in [D···X···D]+ halonium compounds, where D is a Lewis base with N as the donor atom and X is Cl, Br, or I, have been investigated through a combined structural and computational study. Cambridge Structural Database (CSD) searches have revealed linear and symmetrical [D···X···D]+ frameworks with neutral donors. By means of density functional theory (DFT), molecular electrostatic potential (MEP), and energy decomposition analyses (EDA) calculations, we have studied the effect of various halogen atoms (X) on the [D···X···D]+ framework, the effect of different nitrogen-donor groups (D) attached to an iodonium cation (X = I), and the influence of the electron density alteration on the [D···I···D]+ halonium bond by variation of the R substituents at the N-donor upon the symmetry, strength, and nature of the interaction. The physical origin of the interaction arises from a subtle interplay between electrostatic and orbital contributions (σ-hole bond). Interaction energies as high as 45 kcal/mol suggest that halonium bonds can be exploited for the development of novel halonium transfer agents, in asymmetric halofunctionalization or as building blocks in supramolecular chemistry

    Marijuana on Main Streets? The Story Continues in Colombia: An Endogenous Three-part Model

    Cannabis is the most common illicit drug, and understanding its demand is relevant to analyze the potential implications of its legalization. This paper proposes an endogenous three-part model taking into account incidental truncation and access restrictions to study demand for marijuana in Colombia, and analyze the potential effects of its legalization. Our application suggests that modeling simultaneously access, intensive and extensive margin is relevant, and that selection into access is important for the intensive margin. We find that younger men that have consumed alcohol and cigarettes, living in a neighborhood with drug suppliers, and friends that consume marijuana face higher probability of having access and using this drug. In addition, we find that marijuana is an inelastic good (-0.45 elasticity). Our results are robust to different specifications and definitions. If marijuana were legalized, younger individuals with a medium or low risk perception about marijuana use would increase the probability of use in 3.8 percentage points, from 13.6% to 17.4%. Overall, legalization would increase the probability of consumption in 0.7 p.p. (2.3% to 3.0%). Different price settings suggest that annual tax revenues fluctuate between USD 11.0 million and USD 54.2 million, a potential benchmark is USD 32 million

    Trimethylamine N-Oxide: The Good, the Bad and the Unknown

    Trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO) is a small colorless amine oxide generated from choline, betaine, and carnitine by gut microbial metabolism. It accumulates in the tissue of marine animals in high concentrations and protects against the protein-destabilizing effects of urea. Plasma level of TMAO is determined by a number of factors including diet, gut microbial flora and liver flavin monooxygenase activity. In humans, a positive correlation between elevated plasma levels of TMAO and an increased risk for major adverse cardiovascular events and death is reported. The atherogenic effect of TMAO is attributed to alterations in cholesterol and bile acid metabolism, activation of inflammatory pathways and promotion foam cell formation. TMAO levels increase with decreasing levels of kidney function and is associated with mortality in patients with chronic kidney disease. A number of therapeutic strategies are being explored to reduce TMAO levels, including use of oral broad spectrum antibiotics, promoting the growth of bacteria that utilize TMAO as substrate and the development of target-specific molecules with varying level of success. Despite the accumulating evidence, it is questioned whether TMAO is the mediator of a bystander in the disease process. Thus, it is important to undertake studies examining the cellular signaling in physiology and pathological states in order to establish the role of TMAO in health and disease in humans

    Structural basis of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus ADP-ribose-1''-phosphate dephosphorylation by a conserved domain of nsP3.

    The crystal structure of a conserved domain of nonstructural protein 3 (nsP3) from severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARS-CoV) has been solved by single-wavelength anomalous dispersion to 1.4 A resolution. The structure of this "X" domain, seen in many single-stranded RNA viruses, reveals a three-layered alpha/beta/alpha core with a macro-H2A-like fold. The putative active site is a solvent-exposed cleft that is conserved in its three structural homologs, yeast Ymx7, Archeoglobus fulgidus AF1521, and Er58 from E. coli. Its sequence is similar to yeast YBR022W (also known as Poa1P), a known phosphatase that acts on ADP-ribose-1''-phosphate (Appr-1''-p). The SARS nsP3 domain readily removes the 1'' phosphate group from Appr-1''-p in in vitro assays, confirming its phosphatase activity. Sequence and structure comparison of all known macro-H2A domains combined with available functional data suggests that proteins of this superfamily form an emerging group of nucleotide phosphatases that dephosphorylate Appr-1''-p

    Morphometric and Histopathologic Changes in Skeletal Muscle Induced for Injectable PLGA Microparticles

    Galdames, IS (Galdames, Ivan Suazo).Univ Talca, Talca, ChileThe administration of microencapsulated drug in a matrix acid poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) by intramuscular (IM) in humans has been approved by the FDA for various applications though it is not clear what effect they have on the morphological parameters of muscle tissue. The aim of this study was to analyze the morphological changes in the skeletal muscle tissue with their use. We used 12 adult female Sprague Dawley rats (Rattus novergicus) that were injected into their right gastrocnemius muscle belly with: sterile vehicle solution (01, n = 4), 0.5 mg PLGA microparticle (02, n = 4) and 0.75 mg PLGA microparticle (03, n = 4), both dissolved in a sterile vehicle solution. At 14 days post injection the number and diameter of muscle fibers, the level of inflammation and histology appearance in terms of organization of muscle fibers, cellular distribution, tissue morphology and the presence of polymer waste were determined and the results between the groups compared. The administration of the compound in a single dose did not alter the morphometric parameters (number and diameter of muscle fibers) despite generating a mild inflammation in the tissue associated with the presence of polymeric residues, suggesting that the PLGA microparticles were well tolerated by the muscle tissue at concentrations tested (0.5 and 0.75 mg). n Number: WOS:00029366100001
