The 43rd UID conference, held in Genova, takes up the theme of âDialoguesâ as practice and debate on many fundamental topics in our social life, especially in these complex and not yet resolved times. The city of Genova offers the opportunity to ponder on the value of comparison and on the possibilities for the community, naturally focused on the aspects that concern us, as professors, researchers, disseminators of knowledge, or on all the possibile meanings of the discipline of representation and its dialogue with âothersâ, which we have broadly catalogued in three macro areas: History, Semiotics, Science / Technology. Therefore, âdialogueâ as a profitable exchange based on a common language, without which it is impossible to comprehend and understand one another; and the graphic sign that connotes the conference is the precise transcription of this concept: the title âtranslatedâ into signs, derived from the visual alphabet designed for the visual identity of the UID since 2017. There are many topics which refer to three macro sessions: - Witnessing (signs and history) - Communicating (signs and semiotics) - Experimenting (signs and sciences) Thanks to the different points of view, an exceptional resource of our disciplinary area, we want to try to outline the prevailing theoretical-operational synergies, the collaborative lines of an instrumental nature, the recent updates of the repertoires of images that attest and nourish the relations among representation, history, semiotics, sciences
In Liguria, the problem of abandoned minor towns and villages has long been present. There are many reasons behind this, one of which could be the specific characteristics and conditions of the land. This study is based on an analysis of both natural and man-made territories, and is carried out with the aim of verifying if the condition of the land can be listed among the main causes for its abandonment, together with the exploitation and abuse of the land caused by man. Due to its geomorphological and geo-hydrological characteristics, Liguria is exposed to recurring dangerous natural phenomena that affect all four provinces in Liguria even if with differing degrees of intensity. Landslides are extremely diffused phenomena, as demonstrated by PRIN 2015, Protecting the Cultural Heritage from water-soil interaction related threats. Studying the area, starting from the Map of the regionâs unstable zones (2001-2007) and Maps documenting the danger of gravity-driven phenomena (2018), significant issues regarding the land are highlighted, which inevitably affect several towns and villages in Liguria. However, analysis of the conservation state and the general use of the minor towns involved does not seem to show a close connection between abandonment and these natural causes. A naturally unstable territory is not enough to cause the abandonment of small towns, which actually seems to be the result of instability caused by human action alone â often carried out with an improvident, even foolish approach, especially in the last century. I movimenti franosi sono fenomeni molto diffusi, come dimostrato dal PRIN 2015, Protecting the Cultural Heritage from water-soil interaction related threats.
The research about the materials used at Genoa from middle age to Nineteen century for the production of mortars and plasters, beginning from the interesting results of some archaeological researches conduct from the Institute of History of the Materialâs Culture (I.S.Cu.M.), in the firs half of Eighty years of last century. This researches have point out the large use of the dolomitic lime and the use of burned kaolin like pozzolanic material in the building construction, and have highlighted the surprising results of some dough produced during the city construction. An example of this results are the mortars of medieval harbour that still now give, after five century of the permanence in an aggressive environment, an high mechanical resistance and an high resistance to the chemical and biological attack. With this papers we want underline the results of this researches that have been conduct in a multidisciplinary method from the archaeological yard, through the mineralogical laboratories, to the laboratories of materials engineering of the University of Genoa
Optimisation of the radiocarbon dating process of mortar samples. A case study in the Colosseum, Rome (Italy)
This project highlights the importance of an integrated planning of field and laboratory procedures for the success of the radiocarbon dating of mortar samples.
In this research bulk mortar analysis was complemented with lime lump analysis. The two materials were dated at different laboratories.
Results are discussed considering the historic and archaeological information available on the building and on the structure where the sample was collected

The theme / problem of industrial archeology has emerged strongly throughout Italy since the end of the twentith century, but with different attention and sensitivity in the various areas. Liguria has an important industrial past, testified by numerous and significant buildings. Many buildings have been demolished in the last twenty years for various reasons including the lack of experience of designers and companies in the recovery of historical reinforced concrete. The paper indicates the need to deepen the knowledge of a material very different from the c.a. current. A recent research project of the University of Genoa aims to systematize and correlate the data of diagnostic campaigns on reinforced concrete buildings of the first half of the 20th century. The awareness of not always being able to preserve the heritage has led to propose the introduction, in the demolition process, of a debt of knowledge. The aim is to enrich the databases, to be made available to the designers of recovery and restoration, with knowledge campaigns on materials derived from selective demolition. Here is an example of a research derived from the demolition of a part of the historic fruit and vegetable market of Genoa (1926-31)
Borghi dell'entroterra imperiese.
The city of Genoa has had a continuous demographic growth, determined by a flourishing commercial and industrial activity, up to the seventies of the twentieth century. Then, the gradual withdrawal of state holdings in industry, the loss of competitiveness in the maritime sector and the lack of private entrepreneurial initiatives led to a clear reversal of the trend which led to the loss of about 230,000 inhabitants in fifty years.
The twenty-one covered markets, built between 1899 and 1957 for an expanding city, in some cases no longer serve or create unsustainable traffic jams as they are located in areas with no parking areas.
The municipality proposes the sale for some markets and the public-private partnership for important reuse projects. The examination of interventions and projects denounces a lack of conservative attention for even very interesting buildings
