    HEMATOSALPINX TORSION IN AN ADOLESCENT

    Get PDF
Introduction: Isolated fallopian tube torsion is an uncommon cause of acute lower abdominal pain. Ectopic pregnancy, hydro or hematosalpinx, endometriosis, adnexal masses and other causes of adnexal disease are predisposing factors. The diagnosis is difficult and often delayed due to the lack of pathognomonic symptoms, characteristic physical signs, and specific imaging and laboratory studies. Definitive diagnosis requires a surgical approach. Case report: The authors present a case of hematosalpinx and its tubal torsion in a virgin teenager with no prior predisposing factors. Discussion: This rare case may highlight a new insight into pathophysiology of tubal torsion and recalls hematosalpinx as a differential diagnosi

Initial data and the end state of spherically symmetric gravitational collapse

    Get PDF
Generalizing earlier results on the initial data and the final fate of dust collapse, we study here the relevance of the initial state of a spherically symmetric matter cloud towards determining its end state in the course of a continuing gravitational collapse. It is shown that given an arbitrary regular distribution of matter at the initial epoch, there always exists an evolution from this initial data which would result either in a black hole or a naked singularity depending on the allowed choice of free functions available in the solution. It follows that given any initial density and pressure profiles for the cloud, there is a non-zero measure set of configurations leading either to black holes or naked singularities, subject to the usual energy conditions ensuring the positivity of energy density. We also characterize here wide new families of black hole solutions resulting from spherically symmetric collapse without requiring the cosmic censorship assumption.Comment: Ordinary Tex file, 31 pages no figure

Particle swarm and simulated annealing for multi-local optimization

    Get PDF
Particle swarm and simulated annealing optimization algorithms proved to be valid in finding a global optimum in the bound constrained optimization context. However, their original versions can only detect one global optimum even if the problem has more than one solution. In this paper we propose modifications to both algorithms. In the particle swarm optimization algorithm we introduce gradient information to enable the computation of all the global and local optima. The simulated annealing algorithm is combined with a stretching technique to be able to compute all global optima. The numerical experiments carried out with a set of well-known test problems illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithms.Work partially supported by FCT grant POCTI/MAT/58957/ 2004 and by the Algoritmi research center

ARCHAEOLOGICAL GEOPHYSICS IN PORTUGAL – SOME SURVEY EXAMPLES

    Get PDF
The first attempts to apply geophysical methods to archaeological sites in Portugal date from the mid-sixties of the last century. Since then, geophysical methods have been used more and more frequently to help on archaeological site recognition, delineating buried structures, and help on excavating strategies. The first geophysical methods used in Portugal were geoelectrical methods followed by magnetic methods; today those two methods are still used; however, georadar and electrical resistivity tomography have also been used on a routine basis whenever the local conditions allow their use. Four archaeological sites will be described as examples on the use of geophysical methods in Archaeology. Two of them are from roman times (the Roman Villa of Tourega, in central Portugal and the Roman town of Troia, in the west coast of Portugal), one is from Neolithic times (a burial mound in central Portugal); the last one is a recent archaeological site (eighteenth century) and has to do with the location of a crypt known to exist in the garden of the Portuguese Legislature in Lisbon. Only electrical resistivity tomography and georadar were used. The sites were chosen because in all of them there were already previously excavated areas or there were plans for future excavation. When choosing those sites the idea was to be able to compare the interpretations of the geophysical data with the results of the excavations
