    Running with a time limit:experiences of former students with sports development

    Abstract. The components of play and sports have been central to human existence. In today’s world, sports is a social phenomenon which encapsulates various concepts of development in the modern society. Schools are essential places for sporting opportunities, and therefore the students are an important stakeholder in sports development in society. This study locates the various factors at the local as well as global levels that impact the opportunities to participate in sports. The research aims to understand former students’ experiences with sports and the factors that impact the involvement and continued participation in sports in Delhi NCR, India. This study adopts a qualitative framework with a constructivist/interpretivist paradigm to use sports as an umbrella term for play, physical activity and physical education. The participants for this research are 14 former students from the region of Delhi who graduated from school between 2010–2020. The data was collected through the method of retrospective semi-structured interviews. Reflexive Thematic Analysis was employed to find themes that captured the perceptions of the former students. The three themes identified were: “to play or to study”, “who gets to play and stay”, and “changing but slowly”. This study finds that several factors impact sports development in the context of Delhi, such as academics, parental influence, the attitude of teachers, curricular provisions, and availability and utilisation of physical resources. The barriers to sports emerge from the narrow understanding of sports at the societal level. In conclusion, this study captures the experiences of the youth, the former students, to create a timeline for sports development in the urban- private school context. It also highlights the space for further research

    Plant phenological response to microclimatic variations in an alpine zone of Garhwal Himalaya

    The impact of microclimatic variations on the developmental stages of common alpine plant species at four primary phenology sites at Dayara meadow of Garhwal Himalayas (Uttarakhand) was studied. The study revealed that the variations in the topographical features and environmental conditions directly influenced the phenology of the alpine plant species. Site I and IV showed great variation in the timing of phenological phases whereas, site III and IV showed approximately similar phenological timings. Anemone obtusiloba and Anaphalis contorta showed early flowering whereas Aconitum heterophyllum, Bupleurum longicaule and Parnassia nubicola flowered in late August and early September. P. nubicola had a shorter flowering period whereas Tanacetum longifolium.and A. nepalensis had the longest flowering period. Taraxacum officinale and Geum elatum flowered twice in the season

    This article engages the recent Georgia State litigation regarding uses copyrighted content by teachers and seeks to place it within the larger context of the current state of affairs in education and in copyright policy making. In a recent article, Professor Peter Jaszi argued that educators need to begin to articulate the ways in which their uses are transformative in order to increase their chances of winning copyright infringement suits on the basis of fair use. While Jaszi’s point that educators need to better articulate their rights to use copyrighted content is well-taken, we argue that the appropriate audience educators should be targeting is not courts in the context of copyright infringement suits but Congress as it appears to be engaging in the initial steps of considering a comprehensive revision of the copyright statute

    Completely-Positive Non-Markovian Decoherence

    We propose an effective Hamiltonian approach to investigate decoherence of a quantum system in a non-Markovian reservoir, naturally imposing the complete positivity on the reduced dynamics of the system. The formalism is based on the notion of an effective reservoir, i.e., certain collective degrees of freedom in the reservoir that are responsible for the decoherence. As examples for completely positive decoherence, we present three typical decoherence processes for a qubit such as dephasing, depolarizing, and amplitude-damping. The effects of the non-Markovian decoherence are compared to the Markovian decoherence.Comment: 8 pages, 1 figur

    Processing of GPS Data using Accuracy Enhancement Techniques for Sag Monitoring Device

    The paper describes an experimental set up used to collect GPS data in real time. The effect of weather of particular location is also considered in the paper. The major problems in GPS measurements may be due to tall buildings, high mountains, overhead foliage etc. The positioning data provided directly by the satellites are subject to variety of error sources such as thermal noise, tropospheric delays, multipath error, ephemeris errors, satellite clock errors and ionospheric delays before they are processed into position and time solution in the GPS receiver. The paper discusses DSP techniques such as Bad Data identification and modification and Kalman filter used to enhance the accuracy of GPS altitude measurements. Results obtained demonstrate that Kalman filter after Bad Data identification and modification technique significantly reduced the errors in GPS altitude measurements
