    Dynamic Checkpointing of Composite Web Services

    Web services provide services to their consumers in accordance with terms and conditions laid down in a document called as Service Level Agreement (SLA). Web services have to abide by these terms and conditions failing which, SLA faults result. Fault handling of web services is a key mechanism using which SLA faults can be avoided. We propose fault handling of choreographed web services using checkpointing and recovery. We propose checkpointing in three stages: design, deployment and dynamic checkpointing. We have presented first two stages of checkpointing in our earlier publications. In this paper we discuss the need for dynamic checkpointing and, various factors to be considered while revising checkpoint locations dynamically. We also propose a framework for implementing dynamic checkpointing

    Execution Time Prediction for a Web Service Instance

    Availability of services on Internet has provided unique opportunity to customers as well as providers for conducting e-business. This new business paradigm can succeed provided selection of services is accomplished to customer satisfaction in terms of service delivery time as well as service quality. Instead of leaving it to service provider to declare, we propose a strategy for forecasting execution time of the web service being called. The paper deals with model details and proposes a framework for implementation of the model. We also demonstrate its usability in scenarios like checkpointing web services

    Event Based Approach for Web Services Composition

    The success of the Internet and the ongoing globalization led to a demand for new solutions to meet the requirements for ITsystems. The paradigm of service-oriented and event-driven architecture with fine grained and loosely coupled services tries to cope with those needs. Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) and Event Driven Architecture (EDA) are two acknowledged architectures for the development of business applications and information systems, which have evolved separately over the years. Today both architectures are acknowledged, but their synergy is not. There are numerous benefits of having an architecture that supports coexistence between operations and events, and composition of services based on operation invocation and event triggering. As part of our ongoing research work, we have tried to analyze in this paper, the basic design of Event based systems, issues that have to be addressed when event based approach is used for composing and coordinating web services. Then we have specified the techniques available that handle these issues, and gave a comparative study on these techniques. Finally we have attempted to sort out the unhandled/ partially handled issues that could be addressed as part of our research

    Checkpointing Orchestrated Web Services

    Web Services are built on service-oriented architecture which is based on the notion of building applications by discovering and orchestrating services available on the web. Complex business processes can be realized by discovering and orchestrating already available services on the web. In order to make these orchestrated web services resilient to faults; we proposed a simple and elegant checkpointing policy called Call based Global Checkpointing of Orchestrated web services which specifies that when a web service calls another web service the calling web service has to save its state. But performance of the web services implementing this policy reduces due to checkpointing overhead. In an effort to improvise this policy, we propose in this paper, a checkpointing policy which uses Predicted Execution Time and Mean Time Between Failures of the called web services to make checkpointing decisions. This policy aims at reducing the required number of Call based Checkpoints but at the same time maintains the resilience of web services to faults

    Cloud Service Selection System Approach based on QoS Model: A Systematic Review

    The Internet of Things (IoT) has received a lot of interest from researchers recently. IoT is seen as a component of the Internet of Things, which will include billions of intelligent, talkative "things" in the coming decades. IoT is a diverse, multi-layer, wide-area network composed of a number of network links. The detection of services and on-demand supply are difficult in such networks, which are comprised of a variety of resource-limited devices. The growth of service computing-related fields will be aided by the development of new IoT services. Therefore, Cloud service composition provides significant services by integrating the single services. Because of the fast spread of cloud services and their different Quality of Service (QoS), identifying necessary tasks and putting together a service model that includes specific performance assurances has become a major technological problem that has caused widespread concern. Various strategies are used in the composition of services i.e., Clustering, Fuzzy, Deep Learning, Particle Swarm Optimization, Cuckoo Search Algorithm and so on. Researchers have made significant efforts in this field, and computational intelligence approaches are thought to be useful in tackling such challenges. Even though, no systematic research on this topic has been done with specific attention to computational intelligence.     Application and Analysis of Machine Learning Algorithms on Pima and Early Diabetes Datasets for Diabetes Prediction

    Diabetes is a chronic condition that strike how your body burns food for energy. Much of the food you consume is converted by your body into sugar (glucose), which is then released into your bloodstream. Your pancreas releases insulin when your blood sugar levels rise. Over the years, several scholars have sought to create reliable diabetes prediction models. Due to a lack of adequate data sets and prediction techniques, this discipline still faces many unsolved research issues, which forces researchers to apply big data analytics and ML-based methodology. Four distinct machine learning algorithms are used in the study to analyze healthcare prediction analytics and solve the issues. In this investigation, the Pima and Early detection datasets were employed. We applied the Decision Tree, MLP, Naive Bayes, and Random Forest algorithms to these datasets and evaluated the accuracy and F-Measure. The goal of this research is to develop a system that could more precisely predict a patient's risk of developing diabetes

    Physical Association of PDK1 with AKT1 Is Sufficient for Pathway Activation Independent of Membrane Localization and Phosphatidylinositol 3 Kinase

    Frequent activation of the AKT serine-threonine kinase in cancer confers resistance to therapy. AKT is activated by a multi-step process involving phosphatidylinositide (PtdIns) phosphate-mediated recruitment of AKT and its upstream kinases, including 3-Phosphoinositide-dependent kinase 1 (PDK1), to the inner surface of the cell membrane. PDK1 in the appropriate context phosphorylates AKT at threonine 308 (T308) to activate AKT. Whether PtdIns(3,4,5)Ps (PtdInsP3) binding and AKT membrane translocation mediate functions other than formation of a functional PDK1::AKT complex have not been fully elucidated. We fused complementary fragments of intensely fluorescent protein (IFP) to AKT1 and PDK1 to induce a stable complex to study the prerequisites of AKT1 phosphorylation and function. In the stabilized PDK1-IFPC::IFPN-AKT1 complex, AKT1 T308 phosphorylation was independent of PtdIns, as demonstrated by treatment with Phosphatidylinositol 3 Kinase (PI3K) inhibitors. Further when interaction with PtdIns and the cell membrane was prevented by creating PH-domain mutants of AKT1 (R25A) and PDK1 (R474A), AKT1 phosphorylation on T308 was maintained in the PDK1-IFPC::IFPN-AKT1 complex. The PDK1-IFPC::IFPN-AKT1 complex was sufficient for phosphorylation of known AKT substrates, and conferred resistance to inhibitors of PI3K (LY294002, PI103, GDC0941 and TGX286) but not inhibitors of the downstream TORC1 complex (rapamycin). Thus the locus of action of targeted therapeutics can be elucidated by the constitutively active AKT1 complex. Our data indicate that PtdIns and membrane localization are not required for AKT phosphorylation and activation, but rather serve to induce a functional physical interaction between PDK1 and AKT. The PDK1-IFPC::IFPN-AKT1 complex provides a cell-based platform to examine specificity of drugs targeting PI3K pathway components

    Validation of the Kidney Disease Quality of Life-Short Form: a cross-sectional study of a dialysis-targeted health measure in Singapore

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>In Singapore, the prevalence of end-stage renal disease (ESRD) and the number of people on dialysis is increasing. The impact of ESRD on patient quality of life has been recognized as an important outcome measure. The Kidney Disease Quality Of Life-Short Form (KDQOL-SF™) has been validated and is widely used as a measure of quality of life in dialysis patients in many countries, but not in Singapore. We aimed to determine the reliability and validity of the KDQOL-SF™ for haemodialysis patients in Singapore.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>From December 2006 through January 2007, this cross-sectional study gathered data on patients ≥21 years old, who were undergoing haemodialysis at National Kidney Foundation in Singapore. We used exploratory factor analysis to determine construct validity of the eight KDQOL-SF™ sub-scales, Cronbach's alpha coefficient to determine internal consistency reliability, correlation of the overall health rating with kidney disease-targeted scales to confirm validity, and correlation of the eight sub-scales with age, income and education to determine convergent and divergent validity.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Of 1980 haemodialysis patients, 1180 (59%) completed the KDQOL-SF™. Full information was available for 980 participants, with a mean age of 56 years. The sample was representative of the total dialysis population in Singapore, except Indian ethnicity that was over-represented. The instrument designers' proposed eight sub-scales were confirmed, which together accounted for 68.4% of the variance. All sub-scales had a Cronbach's α above the recommended minimum value of 0.7 to indicate good reliability (range: 0.72 to 0.95), except for Social function (0.66). Correlation of items within subscales was higher than correlation of items outside subscales in 90% of the cases. The overall health rating positively correlated with kidney disease-targeted scales, confirming validity. General health subscales were found to have significant associations with age, income and education, confirming convergent and divergent validity.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>The psychometric properties of the KDQOL-SF™ resulting from this first-time administration of the instrument support the validity and reliability of the KDQOL-SF™ as a measure of quality of life of haemodialysis patients in Singapore. It is, however, necessary to determine the test-retest reliability of the KDQOL-SF™ among the haemodialysis population of Singapore.</p

    High frequency of Plasmodium falciparum chloroquine resistance marker (pfcrt T76 mutation) in Yemen: An urgent need to re-examine malaria drug policy

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Malaria remains a significant health problem in Yemen with <it>Plasmodium falciparum </it>being the predominant species which is responsible for 90% of the malaria cases. Despite serious concerns regarding increasing drug resistance, chloroquine is still used for the prevention and treatment of malaria in Yemen. This study was carried out to determine the prevalence of choloroquine resistance (CQR) of <it>P. falciparum </it>isolated from Yemen based on the <it>pfcrt </it>T76 mutation.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>A cross-sectional study was carried out among 511 participants from four governorates in Yemen. Blood samples were screened using microscopic and species-specific nested PCR based on the 18S rRNA gene to detect and identify <it>Plasmodium </it>species. Blood samples positive for <it>P. falciparum </it>were used for detecting the <it>pfcrt </it>T76 mutation using nested-PCR.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The prevalence of <it>pfcrt </it>T76 mutation was 81.5% (66 of 81 isolates). Coastal areas/foothills had higher prevalence of <it>pfcrt </it>T76 mutation compared to highland areas (90.5% <it>vs </it>71.8%) (p = 0.031). The <it>pfcrt </it>T76 mutation had a significant association with parasitaemia (p = 0.045). Univariate analysis shows a significant association of <it>pfcrt </it>T76 mutation with people aged > 10 years (OR = 9, 95% CI = 2.3 - 36.2, p = 0.001), low household income (OR = 5, 95% CI = 1.3 - 19.5, p = 0.027), no insecticide spray (OR = 3.7, 95% CI = 1.16 - 11.86, p = 0.025) and not sleeping under insecticide treated nets (ITNs) (OR = 4.8, 95% CI = 1.38 - 16.78, p = 0.01). Logistic regression model confirmed age > 10 years and low household income as predictors of <it>pfcrt </it>T76 mutation in Yemen <it>P. falciparum </it>isolates.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>The high prevalence of <it>pfcrt </it>T76 mutation in Yemen could be a predictive marker for the prevalence of <it>P. falciparum </it>CQR. This finding shows the necessity for an in-vivo therapeutic efficacy test for CQ.<it> P. falciparum </it>CQR should be addressed in the national strategy to control malaria.</p
