Observing Grasping Actions Directed to Emotion-Laden Objects: Effects upon Corticospinal Excitability
The motor system is recruited whenever one executes an action as well as when one observes the same action being executed by others. Although it is well established that emotion modulates the motor system, the effect of observing other individuals acting in an emotional context is particularly elusive. The main aim of this study was to investigate the effect induced by the observation of grasping directed to emotion-laden objects upon corticospinal excitability (CSE). Participants classified video-clips depicting the right-hand of an actor grasping emotion-laden objects. Twenty video-clips differing in terms of valence but balanced in arousal level were selected. Motor evoked potentials (MEPs) were then recorded from the first dorsal interosseous using transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) while the participants observed the selected emotional video-clips. During the video-clip presentation, TMS pulses were randomly applied at one of two different time points of grasping: (1) maximum grip aperture, and (2) object contact time. CSE was higher during the observation of grasping directed to unpleasant objects compared to pleasant ones. These results indicate that when someone observes an action of grasping directed to emotion-laden objects, the effect of the object valence promotes a specific modulation over the motor system.Fil: Nogueira Campos, Anaelli A.. Coherent control of injection currents in high-quality films of Bi2Se3
Films of the topological insulator Bi2Se3 are grown by molecular beam epitaxy
with in-situ reflection high-energy electron diffraction. The films are shown
to be high-quality by X-ray reflectivity and diffraction and atomic-force
microscopy. Quantum interference control of photocurrents is observed by
excitation with harmonically related pulses and detected by terahertz
radiation. The injection current obeys the expected excitation irradiance
dependence, showing linear dependence on the fundamental pulse irradiance and
square-root irradiance dependence of the frequency-doubled optical pulses. The
injection current also follows a sinusoidal relative-phase dependence between
the two excitation pulses. These results confirm the third-order nonlinear
optical origins of the coherently controlled injection current. Experiments are
compared to a tight-binding band structure to illustrate the possible optical

Bayesian optimization for the inverse scattering problem in quantum reaction dynamics
We propose a machine-learning approach based on Bayesian optimization to
build global potential energy surfaces (PES) for reactive molecular systems
using feedback from quantum scattering calculations. The method is designed to
correct for the uncertainties of quantum chemistry calculations and yield
potentials that reproduce accurately the reaction probabilities in a wide range
of energies. These surfaces are obtained automatically and do not require
manual fitting of the {\it ab initio} energies with analytical functions. The
PES are built from a small number of {\it ab initio} points by an iterative
process that incrementally samples the most relevant parts of the configuration
space. Using the dynamical results of previous authors as targets, we show that
such feedback loops produce accurate global PES with 30 {\it ab initio}
energies for the three-dimensional H + H H + H reaction
and 290 {\it ab initio} energies for the six-dimensional OH + H
HO + H reaction. These surfaces are obtained from 360
scattering calculations for H and 600 scattering calculations for OH.
We also introduce a method that quickly converges to an accurate PES without
the {\it a priori} knowledge of the dynamical results. By construction, our
method illustrates the lowest number of potential energy points (i.e. the
minimum information) required for the non-parametric construction of global PES
for quantum reactive scattering calculations.Comment: 9 pages, 8 figure
A Monte Carlo Study of the 6.4 keV Emission at the Galactic Center
Strong fluorescent Fe line emission at 6.4 keV has been observed from the Sgr
B2 giant molecular cloud located in the Galactic Center region. The large
equivalent width of this line and the lack of an apparent illuminating nearby
object indicate that a time-dependent source, currently in a low-activity
state, is causing the fluorescent emission. It has been suggested that this
illuminator is the massive black hole candidate, Sgr A*, whose X-ray luminosity
has declined by an unprecedented six orders of magnitude over the past 300
years. We here report the results of our Monte Carlo simulations for producing
this line under a variety of source configurations and characteristics. These
indicate that the source may in fact be embedded within Sgr B2, although
external sources give a slightly better fit to the data. The weakened
distinction between the internal and external illuminators is due in part to
the instrument response function, which accounts for an enhanced equivalent
width of the line by folding some of the continuum radiation in with the
intrinsic line intensity. We also point out that although the spectrum may be
largely produced by K emission in cold gas, there is some evidence in
the data to suggest the presence of warm (~10^5 K) emitting material near the

Scaling relations for magnetic nanoparticles
A detailed investigation of the scaling relations recently proposed by [J.
d'Albuquerque e Castro, D. Altbir, J. C. Retamal, and P. Vargas, Phys. Rev.
Lett. 88, 237202 (2002)] to study the magnetic properties of nanoparticles is
presented. Analytical expressions for the total energy of three characteristic
internal configurations of the particles are obtained, in terms of which the
behavior of the magnetic phase diagram for those particles upon scaling of the
exchange interaction is discussed. The exponent in scaling relations is
shown to be dependent on the geometry of the vortex core, and results for

Multiwavelength study of the starburst galaxy NGC7714. I: Ultraviolet-Optical spectroscopy
We have studied the physical conditions in the central 300 pc of the
proto-typical starburst galaxy NGC 7714. Our analysis is based on ultraviolet
spectroscopy with the HST+GHRS and ground-based optical observations.The data
are interpreted using evolutionary models optimized for young starburst
regions. The massive stellar population is derived in a self-consistent way
using the continuum and stellar absorption lines in the ultraviolet and the
nebular emission line optical spectrum.
The central starburst has an age of about 4.5 Myr, with little evidence for
an age spread. Wolf-Rayet features at the ultraviolet indicates a stellar
population of 2000 Wolf-Rayet stars. The overall properties of the newly
formed stars are quite similar to those derived, e.g., in 30 Doradus. A
standard Salpeter IMF is consistent with all observational constraints. We find
evidence for spatial structure within the central 300 pc sampled. Therefore it
is unlikely that the nucleus of NGC 7714 hosts a single star cluster exceeding
the properties of other known clusters. Contrary to previous suggestions, we
find no evidence for a nuclear supernova rate that would significantly exceed
the total disk-integrated rate. About one supernova event per century is

Higher order corrections to Heterotic M-theory inflation
We investigate inflation driven by dynamical five-branes in Heterotic
M-theory using the scalar potential derived from the open membrane instanton
sector. At leading order the resulting theory can be mapped to power law
inflation, however more generally one may expect higher order corrections to be
important. We consider a simple class of such corrections, which imposes tight
