    We numerically investigate the spectral statistics of pseudo-energies for the unitary network operator U of the Chalker--Coddington network. The shape of the level spacing distribution as well the scaling of its moments is compared to known results for quantum Hall systems.     Divergent estimation error in portfolio optimization and in linear regression

    The problem of estimation error in portfolio optimization is discussed, in the limit where the portfolio size N and the sample size T go to infinity such that their ratio is fixed. The estimation error strongly depends on the ratio N/T and diverges for a critical value of this parameter. This divergence is the manifestation of an algorithmic phase transition, it is accompanied by a number of critical phenomena, and displays universality. As the structure of a large number of multidimensional regression and modelling problems is very similar to portfolio optimization, the scope of the above observations extends far beyond finance, and covers a large number of problems in operations research, machine learning, bioinformatics, medical science, economics, and technology.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures, Statphys 23 Conference Proceedin

    Shelf Life and Quality of Bologna-Type Fat Reduced Turkey Sausage

    This study aimed to evaluate the effect of refrigerated storage on the microbial properties and organoleptic quality of Bologna-type turkey sausage, in which fat was partially replaced with pea fibre or potato starch. Each manufactured sausage had lower counts of Esherichia coli and enterobacteria than 1 log CFU·g−1, counts were below 2 log CFU·g−1 for Staphylococcus aureus, moreover, no Salmonella spp. were found in any of the sausages. The counts of mesophilic aerobic bacteria did not exceed 4 log CFU·g−1 for each sausage formulation during four-week storage at 4 °C. Spectrocolorimetric measurements revealed that there was no decline in luminosity (L*) and redness (a*) by time, namely colour fading did not occur. Saltiness and juiciness values of sausages were directly proportional. Low-fat sausages were perceived less salty than full-fat analogue with the same salt content at the early stage of storage. Nevertheless, this phenomenon was temporary as sausages had the same saltiness at the end of four-week storage period. Sausages, in which 25% of fat was substituted with pea fibre or potato starch, were assessed as having the same odour, consistency, taste, and overall impact like control during the four-week refrigerated storage

    Duality Between the Weak and Strong Interaction Limits for Randomly Interacting Fermions

    We establish the existence of a duality transformation for generic models of interacting fermions with two-body interactions. The eigenstates at weak and strong interaction U possess similar statistical properties when expressed in the U=0 and U=infinity eigenstates bases respectively. This implies the existence of a duality point U_d where the eigenstates have the same spreading in both bases. U_d is surrounded by an interval of finite width which is characterized by a non Lorentzian spreading of the strength function in both bases.     Differential contribution of PB1-F2 to the virulence of highly pathogenic H5N1 influenza A virus in mammalian and avian species

    Highly pathogenic avian influenza A viruses (HPAIV) of the H5N1 subtype occasionally transmit from birds to humans and can cause severe systemic infections in both hosts. PB1-F2 is an alternative translation product of the viral PB1 segment that was initially characterized as a pro-apoptotic mitochondrial viral pathogenicity factor. A full-length PB1-F2 has been present in all human influenza pandemic virus isolates of the 20(th) century, but appears to be lost evolutionarily over time as the new virus establishes itself and circulates in the human host. In contrast, the open reading frame (ORF) for PB1-F2 is exceptionally well-conserved in avian influenza virus isolates. Here we perform a comparative study to show for the first time that PB1-F2 is a pathogenicity determinant for HPAIV (A/Viet Nam/1203/2004, VN1203 (H5N1)) in both mammals and birds. In a mammalian host, the rare N66S polymorphism in PB1-F2 that was previously described to be associated with high lethality of the 1918 influenza A virus showed increased replication and virulence of a recombinant VN1203 H5N1 virus, while deletion of the entire PB1-F2 ORF had negligible effects. Interestingly, the N66S substituted virus efficiently invades the CNS and replicates in the brain of Mx+/+ mice. In ducks deletion of PB1-F2 clearly resulted in delayed onset of clinical symptoms and systemic spreading of virus, while variations at position 66 played only a minor role in pathogenesis. These data implicate PB1-F2 as an important pathogenicity factor in ducks independent of sequence variations at position 66. Our data could explain why PB1-F2 is conserved in avian influenza virus isolates and only impacts pathogenicity in mammals when containing certain amino acid motifs such as the rare N66S polymorphism

    The generalized localization lengths in one dimensional systems with correlated disorder

    The scale invariant properties of wave functions in finite samples of one dimensional random systems with correlated disorder are analyzed. The random dimer model and its generalizations are considered and the wave functions are compared. Generalized entropic localization lengths are introduced in order to characterize the states and compared with their behavior for exponential localization. An acceptable agreement is obtained, however, the exponential form seems to be an oversimplification in the presence of correlated disorder. According to our analysis in the case of the random dimer model and the two new models the presence of power-law localization cannot be ruled out.Comment: 7 pages, LaTeX (IOP style), 2 figure

    Global-Vector Representation of the Angular Motion of Few-Particle Systems II

    The angular motion of a few-body system is described with global vectors which depend on the positions of the particles. The previous study using a single global vector is extended to make it possible to describe both natural and unnatural parity states. Numerical examples include three- and four-nucleon systems interacting via nucleon-nucleon potentials of AV8 type and a 3α\alpha system with a nonlocal αα\alpha\alpha potential. The results using the explicitly correlated Gaussian basis with the global vectors are shown to be in good agreement with those of other methods. A unique role of the unnatural parity component, caused by the tensor force, is clarified in the 01−0^-_1 state of 4^4He. Two-particle correlation function is calculated in the coordinate and momentum spaces to show different characteristics of the interactions employed.Comment: 39 pages, 4 figure

    Second bound state of the positronium molecule and biexcitons

    A new, hitherto unknown bound state of the positronium molecule, with orbital angular momentum L=1 and negative parity is reported. This state is stable against autodissociation even if the masses of the positive and negative charges are not equal. The existence of a similar state in two-dimension has also been investigated.     Energy and Utilities Infrastructure: Can All be in One?

    In today‘s developed society it is fully expected that every household is provided with general utility products such as heating, lighting, water supply, communication, and waste removal. Provision of these utility products requires large and complex physical, economic and social structures that interact and are interdependent. Furthermore, we underline that each distinct utility product (communication, transportation, water, etc.) provided to our households incurs similar material and embodied energy expenses. But are such structures and their respective expenses really necessary? Or could energy (and other resources) be saved by reducing redundant utility infrastructures, while still maintaining services to the households? Conventional approaches to improved utility provision focus on better management models with optimization, enhanced handling, and increased efficiency in organisations. This paper, on the other hand, presents a novel and radical idea to address this complex problem, by moving from the management level to the scientific & technological level. The paper challenges the need for distinct utility infrastructures for household utility products provision. In particular, the paper discusses the emerging scientific and technological options for using a single energy-provision infrastructure, which would potentially deliver the full set of household utility services
