    Laplace\u2019s Method of Integration in the Path Integral Approach for the Probabilistic Response of Nonlinear Systems

    In this paper the response of nonlinear systems under stationary Gaussian white noise excitation is studied. The Path Integral (PI) approach, generally employed for evaluating the response Probability Density Function (PDF) of systems in short time steps based on the Chapman-Kolmogorov equation, is here used in conjunction with the Laplace\u2019s method of integration. This yields an approximate analytical solution of the integral involved in the Chapman-Kolmogorov equation. Further, in this manner the repetitive integrations, generally required in the conventional numerical implementation of the procedure, can be circumvented. Application to a nonlinear system is considered, and pertinent comparisons with stationary analytical solutions are presented, demonstrating the efficiency and accuracy of the proposed approach

    Age-related decrease in cortical excitability circadian variations during sleep loss and its links with cognition

    Cortical excitability depends on sleep-wake regulation, is central to cognition, and has been implicated in age-related cognitive decline. The dynamics of cortical excitability during prolonged wakefulness in aging are unknown, however. Here, we repeatedly probed cortical excitability of the frontal cortex using transcranial magnetic stimulation and electroencephalography in 13 young and 12 older healthy participants during sleep deprivation. Although overall cortical excitability did not differ between age groups, the magnitude of cortical excitability variations during prolonged wakefulness was dampened in older individuals. This age-related dampening was associated with mitigated neurobehavioral consequences of sleep loss on executive functions. Furthermore, higher cortical excitability was potentially associated with better and lower executive performance, respectively, in older and younger adults. The dampening of cortical excitability dynamics found in older participants likely arises from a reduced impact of sleep homeostasis and circadian processes. It may reflect reduced brain adaptability underlying reduced cognitive flexibility in aging. Future research should confirm preliminary associations between cortical excitability and behavior and address whether maintaining cortical excitability dynamics can counteract age-related cognitive decline.<br/

    An integrated micromorphological and phytolith study of urban soils and sediments from the Gallo‐Roman town Atuatuca Tungrorum, Belgium

    Tongeren is the only Roman administrative capital within the borders of present-day Belgium. It developed in the first century A.D. and became an important civitas. Many excavations in the center of town have uncovered complex stratigraphic sequences, including dark earths, dating to Roman as well as early medieval times. Their interpretation, based on traditional archaeological methods, often remains problematic. A large-scale excavation at Vermeulenstraat in 2014 is the first occasion where a geoarchaeological study was conducted using both micromorphology and the study of phytoliths in thin sections. The aim was to evaluate the impact of depositional and post-depositional processes, to gain an understanding of the formation of the dark earths encountered on the site, to characterize the deposits between and underneath them, and to identify and differentiate human activities and natural phenomena. The results show a range of different activities and events, such as cultivation, construction (including floor preparation), destruction, waste dumping, and gardening. Their different formation histories illustrate the evolution of the area, and their analysis provides an important precedent for the further geoarchaeological study of this town.SCOPUS: ar.jDecretOANoAutActifinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishe

    Four o´clock pollination biology: nectarines, nectar and flower visitors in Nyctaginaceae from southern South America

    Floral nectary structure and nectar sugar composition were investigated in relation to other floral traits and flower visitors in contrasting species of Nyctaginaceae from southern South America, representing four tribes (Bougainvilleeae, Colignonieae, Nyctagineae, Pisoneae). Our comparative data will aid in the understanding of plant–pollinator interactions and in the development of hypotheses on the origin of floral and reproductive characters in this family. The nectaries are located on the inner side of the staminal tube. The nectariferous tissue is composed of an epidermis and three to ten layers of secretory parenchymal cells, supplied indirectly by the filament vascular bundles. Stomata appear to be associated with nectar secretion. For the first time in Nyctaginaceae, nectary ultrastructure is described in Boerhavia diffusa var. leiocarpa. Nectary parenchyma cells are densely cytoplasmic and contain numerous starch grains. Plasmodesmata connect the nectariferous cells. Flowers of Nyctaginaceae secrete a small volume of nectar of variable concentration (10–47%). Nectar is dominated by hexoses, but Mirabilis jalapa showed a balanced proportion of sucrose and hexoses. Hymenoptera are the most common visitors for most species; nocturnal Lepidoptera are the most common visitors for M. jalapa and Bougainvillea stipitata. We found relatively low variation in the nectary characteristics of Nyctaginaceae compared with broad variation in flower structure, shape, colour and nectar traits.Fil: Nores, María Jimena.
