Aligning identity in legal services firms : do senior partners in legal services firms possess the core characteristics of identity to work in alignment within the firm?
This exploratory study used grounded theory to discover whether senior partners in legal services firms in the UK held the core characteristics of identity to work in alignment in the changing context. Using a combination of participant interviews and secondary analysis of published material, knowledge was generated to review some changes resulting from the Legal Services Act, the components of identity, and individual and peer alignment in these senior partners. The term ‘alignment’ is used in this study to describe both a state and a process. The study suggests that senior partners do not currently display many of the attributes to take their firms into a successful future. Senior partners reported living a facade, having difficulties with boundaries and the complex role of partner. They seem to focus on eliminating problems rather than striving to achieve goals, and are more interested in ‘I’ than ‘we’. All of this presents huge challenges for a successful response by the firms to deregulation. There was little evidence of simultaneous identification with the firm and the profession, and this with other findings left a gap between the individual and the collective as well as a gap between the role and core identities of the individual. More positively, there is some evidence of identity negotiation and where participants were doing some personal change work, this was driven by the hindrances to, and supporting beliefs about, the required behaviour at work, and possibly informed by an imagined image of best ‘self’ or ‘group member’. The findings support a practitioner model; ‘CONTRIBUTIONS’ which is useful for coaching and facilitation of individuals and teams. The study offers original contributions to academic knowledge including; building on the ‘identification’ literature, linking in the concept of ‘secondary gain’, specific evidence from the legal partner group against generic concepts of identity literature.EThOS - Electronic Theses Online ServiceGBUnited Kingdo
Morphological and genetic divergences in a coral reef damselfish, Pomacentrus coelestis
Population differentiation is one of the main topics in evolutionary biology. Except the exploration of color variation, few studies focused on morphological divergences among populations of coral reef fishes. In this work, we studied morphological and genetic differentiation among populations of the damselfish, Pomacentrus coelestis, in the northwestern Pacific Ocean. The shapes of the mandible and the premaxilla were explored using geometric morphometric methods and the genetic structure was investigated using microsattelites. Various tests revealed significant shape variation among most P. coelestis populations for both skeletal units. Morphological variation of the mandible accompanies a genetic break between populations of mainland Japan and Okinawa-Taiwan. However, Mantel and Procrustes tests revealed no congruence between morphological and genetic structures. We illustrate that phenotypic plasticity and adaptive divergence are potential evolutionary mechanisms underlying shape difference among P. coelestis populations. An ecomorphological approach suggests that various diet could be related to shape variation of oral jaws
Studies of Water Hyacinth ( Eichhornia Crassipes ) as the Base of Fishing Gear Material
The research was conducted on 15 September to 20 October 2014 Capture Device Materials Laboratoryof Water Resource Utilization Department of the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Scieces, University of Riau. The method used in this research is the method ofobservation and experimental methods. This study aims to assess the utilization of water hyacinth as a basic ingredient of fishing gear through histological studies, testing water absorption, breaking strength and elongation of the fiber.Based on theresearch of water hyacinth (E. crassipes) with a length of 25 cm, the average value obtained rupture strength was 14.6 kgf, elongation value is equal to 37.4 mm and the average value of water absorption of the sample hyacinth is 2.05103 grams or by 61.923%
Computational Chemistry Methods for Nanoporous Materials
International audienceWe present here the computational chemistry methods our group uses to investigate the physical and chemical properties of nanoporous materials and adsorbed fluids. We highlight the multiple time and length scales at which these properties can be examined and discuss the computational tools relevant to each scale. Furthermore, we include the key points to consider—upsides, downsides, and possible pitfalls—for these methods
Gut content metabarcoding of specialized feeders is not a replacement for environmental DNA assays of seawater in reef environments
In tropical marine ecosystems, the coral-based diet of benthic-feeding reef fishes provides a window into the composition and health of coral reefs. In this study, for the first time, we compare multi-assay metabarcoding sequences of environmental DNA (eDNA) isolated from seawater and partially digested gut items from an obligate corallivore butterflyfish (Chaetodon lunulatus) resident to coral reef sites in the South China Sea. We specifically tested the proportional and statistical overlap of the different approaches (seawater vs gut content metabarcoding) in characterizing eukaryotic community composition on coral reefs. Based on 18S and ITS2 sequence data, which differed in their taxonomic sensitivity, we found that gut content detections were only partially representative of the eukaryotic communities detected in the seawater based on low levels of taxonomic overlap (3 to 21%) and significant differences between the sampling approaches. Overall, our results indicate that dietary metabarcoding of specialized feeders can be complimentary to, but is no replacement for, more comprehensive environmental DNA assays of reef environments that might include the processing of different substrates (seawater, sediment, plankton) or traditional observational surveys. These molecular assays, in tandem, might be best suited to highly productive but cryptic oceanic environments (kelp forests, seagrass meadows) that contain an abundance of organisms that are often small, epiphytic, symbiotic, or cryptic.</p
Home healthcare in Iran: A hybrid concept analysis
Background: Healthcare is changing from a focus on acute care health issues to one of managing chronic conditions. This change has resulted in the development of home health-care systems as a way of managing chronic conditions outside the hospital. The aim of this study was to analyze the concept of home healthcare using a hybrid model. Materials and Methods: This hybrid concept analysis consisted of three phases: theoretical, fieldwork, and analytical. Science Direct, PubMed, ProQuest, and Scopus were searched with related terms in the theoretical phase. In the fieldwork phase, six professionals with experience in home healthcare were interviewed and after each interview, qualitative content analysis was conducted. During the final phase, descriptions and themes from the first two phases were combined. Results: In the theoretical phase, the definition of home healthcare included descriptions answering the Who, What, When, Where, and Why questions. In the fieldwork phase, the results were divided into three areas: 1-comprehensive care; 2-extent of services; and 3-outcomes. The final analysis phase of this study indicated that the home health-care concept is a comprehensive, professional, and holistic care system accompanied by medical services and professionals whose goals are to support an individual's health and provide care in their home. Healthcare provided in one's home was found to preserve a patient's dignity and reduce health-care costs. Conclusions: The definition of the home healthcare concept establishes a foundation for developing a comprehensive home health-care system. This concept analysis for home healthcare could be a guide for future studies. © 2021 Wolters Kluwer Medknow Publications. All rights reserved
Effect of transplantation media on Pocillopora coral growth rate at TWAL Pulau Weh
Coral reef ecosystems have a vital role in waters so that damage to coral reef ecosystems can reduce ecological and socio-economic functions that can impact environmental imbalances, such as reef fish and benthic communities. This study aims to determine the effect of transplant media on the growth rate of the genus Pocillopora coral and see whether it has a significant effect on the rate of coral growth in TWAL Pulau Weh, Aceh Province. The method used is a purposive sampling method in determining stations, analysis using the ImageJ 1.52 application. The results showed that the effect of transplant media on the growth rate of Pocillopora corals were significant differences between structures given an electric current and those not given an electric current with a 95% confidence interval. The average growth value of Pocillopora corals given an electric current is 25.06 mm/month. “Am I also going to die, doctor?” A systematic review of the impact of in-hospital patients witnessing a resuscitation of another patient
Background: There is a growing interest in the impact of family-witnessed resuscitation. However, evidence about the effect of hospitalised patients witnessing other patients' resuscitations is limited. Aim: The aim of this systematic review is to explore the existing evidence related to the impact on patients who witness resuscitation attempts on other patients in hospital settings. Methods: The databases BNI, CINAHL, EMBASE, MEDLINE and PsycINFO were searched with the terms 'patient', 'inpatient', 'resuscitation', 'CPR', 'cardiopulmonary resuscitation' and 'witness'. The search strategy excluded the terms 'out-of-hospital', 'family' and 'relative'. The inclusion criteria were: studies related to patients exposed to a resuscitation attempt performed on another patient; quantitative and qualitative design; and physiological or psychological outcome measures. No limitations of date, language or settings were applied. Results: Five of the 540 identified studies were included: two observational studies with control groups and three qualitative studies with interviews and focus groups. Articles were published between 1968 and 2006 and were mostly rated to have a low quality of evidence. Quantitative results of the observational studies showed an increased heart rate in the study group witnessing a resuscitation (p = 0.05), increased systolic blood pressure (p < 0.01) and increased anxiety (p < 0.01). The qualitative studies highlighted the coping strategies adopted by exposed patients in response to witnessing resuscitation, including denial and dissociation. Conclusions: Our findings suggest that patients may find witnessing resuscitation to be a stressful experience. However, the evidence is sparse and mainly of poor quality. Further research is needed in order to better understand the impacts of patients witnessing a resuscitation of another patient and to identify effective support systems. © European Society of Cardiology 2017
The Molecular Biogeography of the Indo-Pacific: Testing Hypotheses With Multispecies Genetic Patterns
Aim: To test hypothesized biogeographic partitions of the tropical Indo-Pacific Ocean with phylogeographic data from 56 taxa, and to evaluate the strength and nature of barriers emerging from this test.
\u3eLocation: The Indo-Pacific Ocean.
Time Period: Pliocene through the Holocene.
Major Taxa Studied: Fifty-six marine species.
Methods: We tested eight biogeographic hypotheses for partitioning of the Indo-Pacific using a novel modification to analysis of molecular variance. Putative barriers to gene flow emerging from this analysis were evaluated for pairwise ΦST, and these ΦST distributions were compared to distributions from randomized datasets and simple coalescent simulations of vicariance arising from the Last Glacial Maximum. We then weighed the relative contribution of distance versus environmental or geographic barriers to pairwise ΦST with a distance-based redundancy analysis (dbRDA).
Results: We observed a diversity of outcomes, although the majority of species fit a few broad biogeographic regions. Repeated coalescent simulation of a simple vicariance model yielded a wide distribution of pairwise ΦST that was very similar to empirical distributions observed across five putative barriers to gene flow. Three of these barriers had median ΦST that were significantly larger than random expectation. Only 21 of 52 species analysed with dbRDA rejected the null model. Among these, 15 had overwater distance as a significant predictor of pairwise ΦST, while 11 were significant for geographic or environmental barriers other than distance.
Main Conclusions: Although there is support for three previously described barriers, phylogeographic discordance in the Indo-Pacific Ocean indicates incongruity between processes shaping the distributions of diversity at the species and population levels. Among the many possible causes of this incongruity, genetic drift provides the most compelling explanation: given massive effective population sizes of Indo-Pacific species, even hard vicariance for tens of thousands of years can yield ΦST values that range from 0 to nearly 0.5
