    Onze samenleving lijdt aan een ‘plastic passion’. Plastic is werkelijk overal. Tot in zeevruchten tref je minuscule stukjes plastic, zogenaamde microplastics, aan. Microplastics is de naam voor stukjes plastic kleiner dan 5mm. Soms zijn ze zo gemaakt, denk maar aan de plastic pellets als grondstof gebruikt in de plasticindustrie of als schuurparels in verzorgingscrubs. Maar microplastics kunnen ook ontstaan door het uiteenvallen van grote stukken plastic afval of bij het wassen van synthetische kledij. Je vindt deze plastic vezeltjes en stukjes in onder andere mosselen en Noordzeegarnalen. De aanwezigheid van microplastics in ons voedsel haalt vaak het nieuws en zorgt voor ongerustheid bij de liefhebbers van al het lekkers uit zee. Maar moeten we ons ook echt zorgen maken

    Jellyfish, jellypress and jellyperception: Final report - Belgian case study

    During the last decades, the number of reports on invasions and blooms of jellyfish has increased, both in scientific literature as in the general media. There is however no clarity about a global rise of gelatinous zooplankton due to the lack of extended time series, and due to the fact that public perception is potentially driven by the media. However, public perception is a key driver in policy decisions, including coastal zone governance and research funding. Consequently, it is useful to investigate the variability within public perception and the relationship between media and public perception in the light of policy. This was investigated within a case study at the Belgian coast regarding the perception on jellyfish and the consequences of jellyfish blooms, based on the results of a questionnaire survey and a media search. The results indicate that perception is only partly driven by the press if it comes to jellyfish. Personal experience seems to be at least equally important as driver. Additionally, the results indicate that there is a large variation in perception on jellyfish, in this study illustrated by the differences in perception between beach tourists and divers. The lack of knowledge about differences between jellyfish species turns out to be a key issue determining perception. Both the variability in perception and the species issue are important for the incorporation of the jellification problem in integrated coastal zone management. In first instance, it is important to extend perception surveys to all groups directly and indirectly affected by jellyfish. By doing so, opportunities may emerge for cooperation between scientists, policymakers and public parties in the form of citizen science. Secondly, management actions concerning jellyfish increases should include the provision of species-specific information, for example by distributing leaflets and putting up warning boards on the beach. This would likely result in a higher acceptance of jellyfish, a better communication between scientists and the public, and in a better quality of data in citizen science programs

    The impact of therapeutics on mortality in hospitalised patients with COVID-19:systematic review and meta-analyses informing the European Respiratory Society living guideline

    Hospitalised patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) have a high mortality rate. There are an increasing number of published randomised controlled trials for anti-inflammatory, anti-viral and other treatments. The European Respiratory Society Living Guidelines for the Management of Hospitalised Adults with COVID-19 were published recently, providing recommendations on appropriate pharmacotherapy.Patient, Intervention, Comparator and Outcomes questions for key interventions were identified by an international panel and systematic reviews were conducted to identify randomised controlled trials meeting the inclusion criteria. The importance of end-points were rated, and mortality was identified as the key "critical" outcome for all interventions. Random-effects meta-analysis was used to pool studies and provide effect estimates for the impact of treatments on mortality.Corticosteroids, hydroxychloroquine, azithromycin, remdesivir, anti-interleukin (IL)-6 monoclonal antibodies, colchicine, lopinavir/ritonavir and interferon-β have been reviewed.Our results found further evidence in support of the use of corticosteroids, particularly dexamethasone, and anti-IL-6 receptor monoclonal antibody therapy. These data support the need to identify additional therapies with beneficial effects on mortality

    Nutritional consulting in regular veterinary practices in Belgium and the Netherlands

    BACKGROUND: Increased interest in nutrition by dog and cat owners stresses the importance of providing tailored nutritional guidance for each patient by veterinarians. The World Small Animal Veterinary Association (WSAVA) has provided guidelines to help veterinarians implement this in every-day patient care, by screening patients for the presence of nutritional risk factors, establishing tailored nutritional plans and providing adequate patient follow-up tools. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to assess the use of nutritional assessments in companion animal practices, and to investigate differences between Dutch and Belgian veterinarians. METHODS: A survey was conducted among Dutch and Belgian veterinarians. Of the 423 respondents, 53% were from Belgium, and 47% were from the Netherlands. RESULTS: Only 21% had prior knowledge of the WSAVA nutritional assessment guidelines. General trends in the usage of nutritional assessments were similar in the examined countries. Aside from weighing, diet evaluation by collecting dietary information and body condition or muscle condition scoring were used infrequently, mostly due to insufficient knowledge of the methods. Nutritional recommendations were often made as part of a treatment plan, and were mostly made by veterinarians, but in Dutch practices also by veterinary nurses. CONCLUSION: Despite the fact that nutritional recommendations are a regular part of treatment plans, nutritional risk factors may be missed due to a lack of completely performed nutritional assessments. It remains important to promote the benefits of regular nutritional assessments to veterinarians, which will improve patients' health
