    OH-selected AGB and post-AGB objects I.Infrared and maser properties

    Using 766 compact objects from a survey of the galactic Plane in the 1612-MHz OH line, new light is cast on the infrared properties of evolved stars on the TP-AGB and beyond. The usual mid-infrared selection criteria, based on IRAS colours, largely fail to distinguish early post-AGB stages. A two-colour diagram from narrower-band MSX flux densities, with bimodal distributions, provides a better tool to do the latter. Four mutually consistent selection criteria for OH-masing red PPNe are given, as well as two for early post-AGB masers and one for all post--AGB masers, including the earliest ones. All these criteria miss a group of blue, high-outflow post-AGB sources with 60-mum excess; these will be discussed in detail in Paper II. The majority of post-AGB sources show regular double-peaked spectra in the OH 1612-MHz line, with fairly low outflow velocities, although the fractions of single peaks and irregular spectra may vary with age and mass. The OH flux density shows a fairly regular relation with the stellar flux and the envelope optical depth, with the maser efficiency increasing with IRAS colour R21.     An Attempt to Detect the Galactic Bulge at 12 microns with IRAS

    Surface brightness maps at 12 microns, derived from observations with the Infrared Astronomical Satellite (IRAS), are used to estimate the integrated flux at this wavelength from the Galactic bulge as a function of galactic latitude along the minor axis. A simple model was used to remove Galactic disk emission (e.g. unresolved stars and dust) from the IRAS measurements. The resulting estimates are compared with predictions for the 12 micron bulge surface brightness based on observations of complete samples of optically identified M giants in several minor axis bulge fields. No evidence is found for any significant component of 12m emission in the bulge other than that expected from the optically identified M star sample plus normal, lower luminosity stars.     Bondgraph modelling and simulation of the dynamic behaviour of above-knee prostheses

    A mathematical model was used to investigate the dynamic behaviour of an above-knee (AK) prosthesis in the swing phase and to analyse the influence of mass and mass distribution on the maximal stump load and the required energy. The model consists of a bondgraph model of the prosthesis and a “walking” model which predicts the walking velocity, step length and the femoral trajectory. Equipment was developed to measure the inertial properties of the components of the prosthesis. \ud \ud Through computer simulation, stickdiagrams of the swing phase and graphs of the variation with time of the hip and stump forces were obtained. It was found that for a normal AK prosthesis with a knee-lock mechanism the axial stump load is greatest at the beginning and at the end of the swing phase. At a walking velocity of 5 km/hr the maximum axial stump load amounts to 2.1 times the static weight of the prosthesis. \ud \ud The maximum axial stump force appeared to be almost directly proportional to the total mass of the prosthesis but independent of the mass distribution. The required energy also increased with the mass of the prosthesis but is' dependent on mass distribution. \ud \ud Because of their comparable weights the influence of the shoe is almost equal to the influence of the prosthetic foot. Thus lightweight shoes should be used with lightweight prosthetic feet in order to add to their advantages

    The role of arginine 47 in the cyclization and coupling reactions of cyclodextrin glycosyltransferase from Bacillus circulans strain 251 - Implications for product inhibition and product specificity

    Cyclodextrin glycosyltransferase (CGTase) (EC 2.4.1.19) is used for the industrial production of cyclodextrins. Its application, however, is hampered by the limited cyclodextrin product specificity and the strong inhibitory effect of cyclodextrins on CGTase activity. Recent structural studies have identified Arg47 in the Bacillus circulans strain 251 CGTase as an active-site residue interacting with cyclodextrins, but not with linear oligosaccharides. Arg47 thus may specifically affect CGTase reactions with cyclic substrates or products. Here we show that mutations in Arg47 (to Leu or Gln) indeed have a negative effect on the cyclization and coupling activities; Arg47 specifically stabilizes the oligosaccharide chain in the transition state for these reactions. As a result, the mutant proteins display a shift in product specificity towards formation of larger cyclodextrins. As expected, both mutants also showed lower affinities for cyclodextrins in the coupling reaction, and a reduced competitive (product) inhibition of the disproportionation reaction by cyclodextrins. Both mutants also provide valuable information about the processes taking place during cyclodextrin production assays. Mutant Arg47-->Leu displayed an increased hydrolyzing activity, causing accumulation of increasing amounts of short oligosaccharides in the reaction mixture, which resulted in lower final amounts of cyclodextrins produced from starch. Interestingly, mutant Arg47-->Gln displayed an increased ratio of cyclization/coupling and a decreased hydrolyzing activity. Due to the decreased coupling activity, which especially affects the production of larger cyclodextrins, this CGTase variant produced the various cyclodextrins in a stable ratio in time. This feature is very promising for the industrial application of CGTase enzymes with improved product specificity

    BACKGROUND: Biplanar anterolateral proximal tibial opening wedge osteotomy has been described as successful for patients with combined recurvatum and valgus alignment. As it is a correction in two planes, it is a technically demanding procedure. We report the use of a novel technique with patient specific instrumentation (PSI) guides for different steps, aiming to reduce the complexity of this procedure. METHODS: One patient was treated for genu valgum recurvatum. A virtual surgical plan was made. A two-step PSI approach was used, consisting of an osteotomy guide and a repositioning guide and a custom trial wedges. RESULTS: Follow-up showed full function and improved VAS and KOOS scores. A neutral alignment was achieved. There was 2.76 degrees less varus compared to pre-operative planning, 1.24 degrees of excess slope and a rotational difference of 0.10 degrees. Saw plane accuracy was within 1 mm. CONCLUSIONS: PSI is a recent technical addition to HTOs as a modality to improve accuracy and reduce surgical complexity. Pre-planning and PSI use in an anterolateral opening wedge PTO allowed for an accurate and reproducible biplanar correction in genu valgum recurvatum. Accuracy was comparable to PSI use in lateral open wedge high tibial osteotomies

    LOFAR early-time search for coherent radio emission from GRB 180706A

If the jets are Poynting flux dominated rather than baryon dominated, a coherent radio flare from magnetic re-connection events might be expected with the prompt gamma-ray emission. There are two competing models for the central engines of GRBs; a black hole or a newly formed milli-second magnetar. If the central engine is a magnetar it is predicted to produce coherent radio emission as persistent or flaring activity. In this paper, we present the deepest limits to date for this emission following LOFAR rapid response observations of GRB 180706A. No emission is detected to a 3σ\sigma limit of 1.7 mJy beam1^{-1} at 144 MHz in a two-hour LOFAR observation starting 4.5 minutes after the gamma-ray trigger. A forced source extraction at the position of GRB 180706A provides a marginally positive (1 sigma) peak flux density of 1.1±0.91.1 \pm 0.9 mJy. The data were time-sliced into different sets of snapshot durations to search for FRB like emission. No short duration emission was detected at the location of the GRB. We compare these results to theoretical models and discuss the implications of a non-detection.Peer reviewedFinal Accepted Versio
