    Large atom number Bose-Einstein condensate of sodium

    We describe the setup to create a large Bose-Einstein condensate containing more than 120x10^6 atoms. In the experiment a thermal beam is slowed by a Zeeman slower and captured in a dark-spot magneto-optical trap (MOT). A typical dark-spot MOT in our experiments contains 2.0x10^10 atoms with a temperature of 320 microK and a density of about 1.0x10^11 atoms/cm^3. The sample is spin polarized in a high magnetic field, before the atoms are loaded in the magnetic trap. Spin polarizing in a high magnetic field results in an increase in the transfer efficiency by a factor of 2 compared to experiments without spin polarizing. In the magnetic trap the cloud is cooled to degeneracy in 50 s by evaporative cooling. To suppress the 3-body losses at the end of the evaporation the magnetic trap is decompressed in the axial direction.Comment: 11 pages, 12 figures, submitted to Review Of Scientific Instrument

    Представлен метод многомерного шкалирования на основе трехмерной триангуляции. Рассмотрена возможность качественного сохранения геометрической структуры множества объектов при отображении многомерного пространства в трехмерное. Приведены результаты применения метода для решения задачи кластеризации на примере периодической системы элементов Д.И. Менделеева. Экспериментально показано, что по критериям качества кластеризации предложенный метод более эффективен в сравнении с методами k-средних и нейронной сети Кохонена.Представлено метод багатовимірного шкалювання на основі тривимірної тріангуляції. Розглянуто можливість якісного збереження геометричної структури множини об’єктів при відображенні багатовимірного простору в тривимірне. Наведено результати застосування методу для вирішення задачі кластеризації на прикладі періодичної системи елементів Д.І. Менделєєва. Експериментально показано, що за критеріями якості кластеризації запропонований метод більш ефективний у порівнянні з методами k-середніх та нейронної мережі Кохонена.The method of multidimensional scaling on the basis of the 3-D triangulation is presented. The qualitative preservation possibility of geometrical structure of objects by multidimensional space mapping to three- dimensional space is considered. The results of application of the method for clustering problem of the Mendeleyev periodic table are presented. It is experimentally shown, that the presented method is more effective by criteria of clustering quality in comparison with the methods of k-averages and the Kohonen neural network

    Lessons Learned from Telemonitoring in an Outpatient Bariatric Surgery Pathway-Secondary Outcomes of a Patient Preference Clinical Trial

    Background: Remote monitoring is increasingly used to support postoperative care. This study aimed to describe the lessons learned from the use of telemonitoring in an outpatient bariatric surgery pathway. Materials and Methods: Patients were assigned based on their preference to an intervention cohort of same-day discharge after bariatric surgery. In total, 102 patients were monitored continuously for 7 days using a wearable monitoring device with a Continuous and Remote Early Warning Score–based notification protocol (CREWS). Outcome measures included missing data, course of postoperative heart and respiration rate, false positive notification and specificity analysis, and vital sign assessment during teleconsultation. Results: In 14.7% of the patients, data for heart rate was missing for &gt; 8 h. A day-night-rhythm of heart rate and respiration rate reappeared on average on postoperative day 2 with heart rate amplitude increasing after day 3. CREWS notification had a specificity of 98%. Of the 17 notifications, 70% was false positive. Half of them occurred between day 4 and 7 and were accompanied with surrounding reassuring values. Comparable postoperative complaints were encountered between patients with normal and deviated data. Conclusion: Telemonitoring after outpatient bariatric surgery is feasible. It supports clinical decisions, however does not replace nurse or physician care. Although infrequent, the false notification rate was high. We suggested additional contact may not be necessary when notifications occur after restoration of circadian rhythm or when surrounding reassuring vital signs are present. CREWS supports ruling out serious complications, what may reduce in-hospital re-evaluations. Following these lessons learned, increased patients’ comfort and decreased clinical workload could be expected. Trial Registration: ClinicalTrials.gov. Identifier: NCT04754893.     Near-infrared Emitting CulnSe2/CulnS2 Dot Core/Rod Shell Heteronanorods by Sequential Cation Exchange

    The direct synthesis of heteronanocrystals (HNCs) combining different ternary semiconductors is challenging and has not yet been successful. Here, we report a sequential topotactic cation exchange (CE) pathway that yields CuInSe2/CuInS2 dot core/rod shell nanorods with near-infrared luminescence. In our approach, the Cu+ extraction rate is coupled to the In3+ incorporation rate by the use of a stoichiometric trioctylphosphine-InCl3 complex, which fulfills the roles of both In-source and Cu-extracting agent. In this way, Cu+ ions can be extracted by trioctylphosphine ligands only when the In–P bond is broken. This results in readily available In3+ ions at the same surface site from which the Cu+ is extracted, making the process a direct place exchange reaction and shifting the overall energy balance in favor of the CE. Consequently, controlled cation exchange can occur even in large and anisotropic heterostructured nanocrystals with preservation of the size, shape, and heterostructuring of the template NCs into the product NCs. The cation exchange is self-limited, stopping when the ternary core/shell CuInSe2/CuInS2 composition is reached. The method is very versatile, successfully yielding a variety of luminescent CuInX2 (X = S, Se, and Te) quantum dots, nanorods, and HNCs, by using Cd-chalcogenide NCs and HNCs as templates. The approach reported here thus opens up routes toward materials with unprecedented properties, which would otherwise remain inaccessible

    A vulnerable age group:the impact of cancer on the psychosocial well-being of young adult childhood cancer survivors

    PURPOSE: This study aimed to increase our understanding of the psychosocial well-being of young adult childhood cancer survivors (YACCS) as well as the positive and negative impacts of cancer. METHODS: YACCS (aged 18-30, diagnosed ≤ 18, time since diagnosis ≥ 5 years) cross-sectionally filled out the "Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory Young Adults" (PedsQL-YA), "Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale" (HADS), and "Checklist Individual Strengths" (CIS-20R) to measure fatigue and survivor-specific "Impact of Cancer - Childhood Survivors" (IOC-CS), which measures the long-term impact of childhood cancer in several domains. Descriptive statistics (IOC-CS), logistic regression (HADS, CIS-20R), and ANOVA (PedsQL-YA, HADS, CIS-20R) were performed. Associations between positive and negative impacts of childhood cancer and psychosocial outcomes were examined with linear regression analyses. RESULTS: YACCS (N = 151, 61.6% female, mean age 24.1 ± 3.6, mean time since diagnosis 13.6 ± 3.8) reported lower HRQOL (- .4 ≤ d ≤ - .5, p ≤ .001) and more anxiety (d = .4, p ≤ .001), depression (d = .4, p ≤ .01), and fatigue (.3 ≤ d ≤ .5, p ≤ .001) than young adults from the general Dutch population. They were at an increased risk of experiencing (sub)clinical anxiety (OR = 1.8, p = .017). YACCS reported more impact on scales representing a positive rather than negative impact of CC. Various domains of impact of childhood cancer were related to psychosocial outcomes, especially "Life Challenges" (HRQOL β = - .18, anxiety β = .36, depression β = .29) and "Body & Health" (HRQOL β = .27, anxiety β = - .25, depression β = - .26, fatigue β = - .47). CONCLUSION: YACCS are vulnerable to psychosocial difficulties, but they also experience positive long-term impacts of childhood cancer. Positive and negative impacts of childhood cancer were associated with psychosocial outcomes in YACCS. Screening of psychosocial outcomes and offering targeted interventions are necessary to optimize psychosocial long-term follow-up care for YACCS

    SGLT2 inhibition promotes glomerular repopulation by cells of renin lineage in experimental kidney disease

    Aim: Sodium glucose co-transporter-2 (SGLT2) inhibitors stimulate renal excretion of sodium and glucose and exert renal protective effects in patients with (non-)diabetic chronic kidney disease (CKD) and may as well protect against acute kidney injury (AKI). The mechanism behind this kidney protective effect remains unclear. Juxtaglomerular cells of renin lineage (CoRL) have been demonstrated to function as progenitors for multiple adult glomerular cell types in kidney disease. This study assesses the impact of SGLT2 inhibition on the repopulation of glomerular cells by CoRL and examines their phenotypic commitment. Methods: Experiments were performed in Ren1cre-tdTomato lineage-trace mice. Either 5/6 nephrectomy (5/6NX) modeling CKD or bilateral ischaemia reperfusion injury (bIRI) mimicking AKI was applied, while the SGLT2 inhibitor empagliflozin (10 mg/kg) was administered daily via oral gavage for 14 days. Results: Both 5/6NX and bIRI-induced kidney injury increased the number of glomerular CoRL-derived cells. SGLT2 inhibition improved kidney function after 5/6NX, indicated by decreased blood creatinine and urea levels, but not after bIRI. In line with this, empagliflozin in 5/6NX animals resulted in less glomerulosclerosis, while it did not affect histopathological features in bIRI. Treatment with empagliflozin resulted in an increase in the number of CoRL-derived glomerular cells in both 5/6NX and bIRI conditions. Interestingly, SGLT2 inhibition led to more CoRL-derived podocytes in 5/6NX animals, whereas empagliflozin-treated bIRI mice presented with increased levels of parietal epithelial and mesangial cells derived from CoRL. Conclusion: We conclude that SGLT2 inhibition by empagliflozin promotes CoRL-mediated glomerular repopulation with selective CoRL-derived cell types depending on the type of experimental kidney injury. These findings suggest a previously unidentified mechanism that could contribute to the renoprotective effect of SGLT2 inhibitors.</p
