    What emotional tears convey:Tearful individuals are seen as warmer, but also as less competent

    Earlier research found that the mere sight of tears promotes the willingness to provide support to the person shedding the tears. Other research, however, found that deliberate responses towards tearful persons could be more negative as well. We think this is because tears have ambivalent effects on person perception: we predicted that tearful people are seen as warmer, but also as less competent. In three studies we asked participants (total N = 1042) to form their impression of someone based on a picture. The person either displayed visible tears, or the tears had been digitally removed. Tearful individuals were perceived as being warmer, but also as less competent. In Study 2 we also added a measure of perceived sadness. Seeing a tearful face increased perceived sadness, and this (partially) explained the reduction in perceived competence of the target person. There was no such indirect effect of the tear on perceived warmth via perceived sadness. Study 3 found that people would be more likely to approach a tearful person to offer help than a tearless individual. At the same time, tearful individuals would be more likely to be avoided in situations in which the observer needs assistance for an important task

Despite the range of techniques is broad (and vary from a large gantry system, to a supersized Delta printer for example), many of the developed 3D printing machines are constraint in their movement. Mobile 3D printers however show advantages in flexibility, as they can move outside the constraint of a large 3D printer and they can move in the highly unstructured and hazardous environment of the building site, which can be dangerous for people to work in. The Institute for advanced architecture of Catalonia developed vehicles, which they call minibuilders, each designed for a special task in the building process, printing the foundation, printing a wall, smoothing the outer-wall etc. The minibuilders are used in succession according the building process. However they are still limited in their autonomy and capability. The minibuilders are tethered with a hose to a vehicle, which carries the concrete supply

    Manipulating word awareness dissociates feed-forward from feedback models of language-perception interactions

    Previous studies suggest that linguistic material can modulate visual perception, but it is unclear at which level of processing these interactions occur. Here we aim to dissociate between two competing models of language–perception interactions: a feed-forward and a feedback model. We capitalized on the fact that the models make different predictions on the role of feedback. We presented unmasked (aware) or masked (unaware) words implying motion (e.g. “rise,” “fall”), directly preceding an upward or downward visual motion stimulus. Crucially, masking leaves intact feed-forward information processing from low- to high-level regions, whereas it abolishes subsequent feedback. Under this condition, participants remained faster and more accurate when the direction implied by the motion word was congruent with the direction of the visual motion stimulus. This suggests that language–perception interactions are driven by the feed-forward convergence of linguistic and perceptual information at higher-level conceptual and decision stages

    Contaminants and micro-organisms in organic and conventional food products

    In the Netherlands we investigated animal and plant products on potentially hazardous contamination with heavy metals, mycotoxins, pesticide residues, patho-genic micro-organisms and nitrate. In most cases, the organically produced foods had equal or lower amounts of contaminants than conventionally pro-duced products. These results conflict with a common idea that organic farming theoretically increases food safety risks. For many contaminants organic food showed a large diversity in the amount of contamina-tion. Experience with organic farming, managing and manure use partly explain these differences. Understanding of these cultivation parameters can help in further improvement of organic cultivation practices

    Baseline MDCT findings after prosthetic heart valve implantation provide important complementary information to echocardiography for follow-up purposes

    Objectives: Recent studies have proposed additional multidetector-row CT (MDCT) for prosthetic heart valve (PHV) dysfunction. References to discriminate physiological from pathological conditions early after implantation are lacking. We present baseline MDCT findings of PHVs 6 weeks post implantation. Methods: Patients were prospectively enrolled and TTE was performed according to clinical guidelines. 256-MDCT images were systematically assessed for leaflet excursions, image quality, valve-related artefacts, and pathological and additional findings. Results: Forty-six patients were included comprising 33 mechanical and 16 biological PHVs. Overall, MDCT image quality was good and relevant regions remained reliably assessable despite mild-moderate PHV-artefacts. MDCT detected three unexpected valve-related pathology cases: (1) prominent subprosthetic tissue, (2) pseudoaneurysm and (3) extensive pseudoaneurysms and valve dehiscence. The latter patient required valve surgery to be redone. TTE only showed trace periprosthetic regurgitation, and no abnormalities in the other cases. Additional findings were: tilted aortic PHV position (n = 3), pericardial haematoma (n = 3) and pericardial effusion (n = 3). Periaortic induration was present in 33/40 (83 %) aortic valve patients. Conclusions: MDCT allowed evaluation of relevant PHV regions in all valves, revealed baseline postsurgical findings and, despite normal TTE findings, detected three cases of unexpected, clinically relevant pathology. Key Points: • Postoperative MDCT presents baseline morphology relevant for prosthetic valve follow-up. • 83 % of patients show periaortic induration 6 weeks after aortic valve replacement. • MDCT detected three cases of clinically relevant pathology not found with TTE. • Valve dehiscence detection by MDCT required redo valve surgery in one patient. • MDCT is a suitable and complementary imaging tool for follow-up purposes

    Event-related potentials and use of psychotropic medication in major psychiatric disorders

    Background: Attention deficits measured using event-related potentials (ERPs) have been frequently reported in several major psychiatric disorders, e.g. mood disorder (MD), psychotic disorder (PD) and substance use disorder (SUD). However, comparisons between these specific categories are lacking. Here we investigated if electrophysiological parameters of basic information processing are associated with the above-mentioned categories of psychiatric disorders, or instead were associated with general psychopathology. Methods: 579 subjects with MD, PD or SUD and healthy controls (HC) were included. Participants were tested in a passive auditory and an active visual oddball paradigm to assess mismatch negativity (MMN), P3A and P3B amplitudes. Additionally, we examined associations between these measures and psychoactive medication treatments. Results: All patients had significantly lower P3B amplitudes compared to healthy controls, while only SUD patients had lower P3A amplitudes than MD, PD and HC. PD patients also produced significantly less MMN than both MD and SUD patients. Additionally, we found significantly higher P3B amplitude in HC compared to patients without psychopharmacological treatment and patients treated with two or more psychoactive compounds (polypharmacy), but no significant associations with medication on P3A and MMN amplitudes. Conclusions: Our results add to the theory that P3B deficits are associated with general psychopathology, whereas P3A and MMN deficits appear to be associated with substance abuse and psychotic disorders respectively

    Associations between psychotropic drugs and rsEEG connectivity and network characteristics: a cross-sectional study in hospital-admitted psychiatric patients

    INTRODUCTION: Resting-state EEG (rsEEG) characteristics, such as functional connectivity and network topology, are studied as potential biomarkers in psychiatric research. However, the presence of psychopharmacological treatment in study participants poses a potential confounding factor in biomarker research. To address this concern, our study aims to explore the impact of both single and multi-class psychotropic treatments on aforementioned rsEEG characteristics in a psychiatric population. METHODS: RsEEG was analyzed in a real-world cross-sectional sample of 900 hospital-admitted psychiatric patients. Patients were clustered into eight psychopharmacological groups: unmedicated, single-class treatment with antipsychotics (AP), antidepressants (AD) or benzodiazepines (BDZ), and multi-class combinations of these treatments. To assess the associations between psychotropic treatments and the macroscale rsEEG characteristics mentioned above, we employed a general linear model with post-hoc tests. Additionally, Spearman's rank correlation analyses were performed to explore potential dosage effects. RESULTS: Compared to unmedicated patients, single-class use of AD was associated with lower functional connectivity in the delta band, while AP was associated with lower functional connectivity in both the delta and alpha bands. Single-class use of BDZ was associated with widespread rsEEG differences, including lower functional connectivity across frequency bands and a different network topology within the beta band relative to unmedicated patients. All of the multi-class groups showed associations with functional connectivity or topology measures, but effects were most pronounced for concomitant use of all three classes of psychotropics. Differences were not only observed in comparison with unmedicated patients, but were also evident in comparisons between single-class, multi-class, and single/multi-class groups. Importantly, multi-class associations with rsEEG characteristics were found even in the absence of single-class associations, suggesting potential cumulative or interaction effects of different classes of psychotropics. Dosage correlations were only found for antipsychotics. CONCLUSION: Our exploratory, cross-sectional study suggests small but significant associations between single and multi-class use of antidepressants, antipsychotics and benzodiazepines and macroscale rsEEG functional connectivity and network topology characteristics. These findings highlight the importance of considering the effects of specific psychotropics, as well as their interactions, when investigating rsEEG biomarkers in a medicated psychiatric population
