Afrikaner nationalism, white politics and political change in South Africa
African Studies Seminar series. Paper presented March 1974By political change is meant a change in the constitution
of groups and individuals who effectively control political
decision-making in South Africa, The size and diversity of such
groups and number of individuals can either decrease, - in which
case there is an increase in authoritarianism, - or increase, -
in which case there is a move towards a decentralization or
diffusion of political control. A clear distinction must in this
case be made between interest groups, socio-economic and demographic
processes, external or internal to South Africa, that
exert direct or indirect influenoe on the taking of political
decisions and the groups and individuals who effectively control
and are responsible for such decisions. This is simply another
way of stating that more often than not there is a discrepancy
between the pressures for change and the decisions taken to
cope with such pressures..... This paper would like to emphasize the strategic significance
of Afrikaner Nationalists in relation to the problem of political
change in South Africa. As a group they control effective
political decision-making within White politics and therefore
within South Africa in general..
Magnetoplasmon excitations in an array of periodically modulated quantum wires
Motivated by the recent experiment of Hochgraefe et al., we have investigated
the magnetoplasmon excitations in a periodic array of quantum wires with a
periodic modulation along the wire direction. The equilibrium and dynamic
properties of the system are treated self-consistently within the
Thomas-Fermi-Dirac-von Weizsaecker approximation. A calculation of the
dynamical response of the system to a far-infrared radiation field reveals a
resonant anticrossing between the Kohn mode and a finite-wavevector
longitudinal excitation which is induced by the density modulation along the
wires. Our theoretical calculations are found to be in excellent agreement with
experiment.Comment: 9 pages, 8 figure
Farmers' perceptions of the lay health worker on farms in the Western Cape, South Africa
This study is focussed on farms situated in the Boland health district of the Cape Winelands, South Africa. The aim was to explore, understand, and describe the perceptions of farmers of having a trained lay health worker (LHW) on the farm. A qualitative study design was applied. Data were collected during six in-depth interviews and two focus group discussions with participating farmers. The results show that farmers remained positive about the concept of having a trained LHW on the farm, but became frustrated with the lack of recognition of their and the LHWs' contribution by the public health service. Farmers who are willing to participate and remain active are key to introducing a farm community-based LHW intervention. Sustainable LHW interventions are dependent on public health sector support and recognition of all role players.Farm Management,
Integrated Assessment: A Learning Adventure And Growth Opportunity For Adult Learners
The Bachelor in Management and Leadership (BML) is a programme specifically designed for working adult learners in the field of management leadership. As part of their assessment, students have to complete a small research project, called the Major Piece of Work (MPW). The aim of this paper is to discuss the Major Piece of Work as a real example of integrated assessment in order to highlight the value of integrated assessment for adult learners. The first part of the paper comprises an explanation of the Major Piece of Work as an integrated assessment instrument, whilst the second part will focus on the results of a survey regarding the value of the Major Piece of Work highlighted by BML students
Duality constructions from quantum state manifolds
The formalism of quantum state space geometry on manifolds of generalised
coherent states is proposed as a natural setting for the construction of
geometric dual descriptions of non-relativistic quantum systems. These state
manifolds are equipped with natural Riemannian and symplectic structures
derived from the Hilbert space inner product. This approach allows for the
systematic construction of geometries which reflect the dynamical symmetries of
the quantum system under consideration. We analyse here in detail the two
dimensional case and demonstrate how existing results in the AdS_2/CFT_1
context can be understood within this framework. We show how the radial/bulk
coordinate emerges as an energy scale associated with a regularisation
procedure and find that, under quite general conditions, these state manifolds
are asymptotically anti-de Sitter solutions of a class of classical dilaton
gravity models. For the model of conformal quantum mechanics proposed by de
Alfaro et. al. the corresponding state manifold is seen to be exactly AdS_2
with a scalar curvature determined by the representation of the symmetry
algebra. It is also shown that the dilaton field itself is given by the quantum
mechanical expectation values of the dynamical symmetry generators and as a
result exhibits dynamics equivalent to that of a conformal mechanical system.Comment: 25 Pages, References Adde
Riemann zeros, prime numbers and fractal potentials
Using two distinct inversion techniques, the local one-dimensional potentials
for the Riemann zeros and prime number sequence are reconstructed. We establish
that both inversion techniques, when applied to the same set of levels, lead to
the same fractal potential. This provides numerical evidence that the potential
obtained by inversion of a set of energy levels is unique in one-dimension. We
also investigate the fractal properties of the reconstructed potentials and
estimate the fractal dimensions to be for the Riemann zeros and for the prime numbers. This result is somewhat surprising since the
nearest-neighbour spacings of the Riemann zeros are known to be chaotically
distributed whereas the primes obey almost poisson-like statistics. Our
findings show that the fractal dimension is dependent on both the
level-statistics and spectral rigidity, , of the energy levels.Comment: Five postscript figures included in the text. To appear in Phys. Rev.
Perceptions of service quality by clients and contact-personnel in the South African retail banking sector
A superior level of service quality is an important objective for South African retail banks. This paper investigates the levels of perceived service quality among 550 clients and 559 branch contactpersonnel in retail banks in central South Africa. The perceptions are compared, and the findings reveal that clients regard the levels of service they receive to be better than what the contact-personnel perceive them to be experiencing. The physical branch environment was also shown to be an important dimension of perceived service quality among retail clients. A cluster analysis identified three market segments to use when adopting marketing strategies, and the demographic factors of age, race and geographical location were found to be important considerations when developing these marketing strategies. An explicit micro-market marketing approach that is flexible and tailor-made to the characteristics of the location of the branch is a recommendation of the paper.Key words: service quality, central South Africa, retail bank
The Impact Of Business Support Services To SMMEs In South Africa
Small Medium and Micro Enterprises in South Africa were operating in the era of the apartheid regime but were not given enough support and were not a priority in the government of those days. Before democratic transition, the South African government was mainly giving attention to large businesses as well as state-owned enterprises. It was only in the late 1970s and the early 1980s that the South African government realised the importance of the small enterprise sector and its contribution to the country’s economy. The democratic regime of the early 1990s gave SMMEs an opportunity to participate in the South African economy. A White Paper of 1995 introduced the strategy to promote and develop SMMEs in South Africa and to design an SMME policy framework that will focus its attention on supporting and developing SMMEs. The aim was to enable SMMEs to grow as a way of creating a balance in the economy (away from state-owned and large enterprises) As a result, different support mechanisms have been implemented to support and develop SMMEs in the country since the democratic government took over in 1994. This paper evaluates the business support programmes that have been implemented in South Africa since 1994, specifically in the Free State Province for the development and support of SMMEs. In this respect, the paper compares and evaluates the ability of the business support programmes that have been put in place to develop and support SMMEs in order to grow and become sustainable. This is done by means of a brief overview of the international business support services and an assessment of the South African SMME policy environment. The study also conducted five structured interviews with the management representative of the five different business support programmes in the Free State Province. Some of the key findings indicate that not many SMMEs are aware of business support programmes in the Free State and are even less informed as to where to access finances. At the same time, it was found that staff responsible for business support programmes appears to be incompetent, and therefore, deliver poor quality services. From this study it can be concluded that of all the programmes the government-driven initiatives to develop and support SMMEs struggle the most to become operational. The business support programmes focused on markets to some degree, but seldom made it an inherent requirement. This paper recommends that there should be monitoring and evaluation systems available to document the quality of the service delivery to SMMEs in the Province, and to train the staff of the business support programmes to deliver high-quality services to entrepreneurs. The study compared five business support programmes in the Free State with regards to developing and supporting SMMEs in the province. As a result, the value of the findings might well be considered in terms of future provincial planning documents and policy
