We examine the consequences of transparency in an experimentalmultiple-dealer market with asymmetrically informed dealers. Fiveprofessional securities traders make a market for a single security. In each trading round, one of the dealers (the "insider") is told thesecurity's true value. We vary both pre-trade and post-tradetransparency by changing the way quote and trade information ispublished. The insider's profits are greatest when price efficiency islowest. Price efficiency, in turn, is reduced by pre-tradetransparency and increased by posttrade transparency. Marketliquidity, measured by dealers' bid-ask spreads, is improved bypre-trade transparency and reduced by post-trade transparency.financial markets;information asymmetry;market microstructure;experimental economics
Seafarer fatigue: a review of risk factors, consequences for seafarers’ health and safety and options for mitigation
Background: The consequences of fatigue for the health and safety of seafarers has caused concern in the industry and among academics, and indicates the importance of further research into risk factors and preventive interventions at sea. This review gives an overview of the key issues relating to seafarer fatigue.
Materials and methods: A literature study was conducted aiming to collect publications that address risk factors for fatigue, short-term and long-term consequences for health and safety, and options for fatigue mitigation at sea. Due to the limited number of publications that deals with seafarers, experiences from other populations sharing the same exposures (e.g. shift work) were also included when appropriate.
Results: Work at sea involves multiple risk factors for fatigue, which in addition to acute effects (e.g., impaired cognition, accidents) contributes through autonomic, immunologic and metabolic pathways to the development of chronic diseases that are particularly prevalent in seafarers.
Conclusions: Taking into account the frequency of seafarer fatigue and the severity of its consequences, one should look into the efficacy of the current legislative framework and the industry’s compliance, the manning of the international merchant fleet, and optimised working, living and sleeping conditions at sea. Considering circumstances at sea, e.g. working in shifts and crossing time zones, that cannot be altered, further assessment of the potentials of preventive interventions including fatigue prediction tools and individual fatigue mitigation management systems is recommended.

Organic phosphate but not inorganic phosphate regulates Fgf23 expression through MAPK and TGF-ęžµ signaling
One of the main regulators of phosphate homeostasis is fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23), secreted by osteocytes. The effects of organic versus inorganic dietary phosphate on this homeostasis are unclear. This study used MC3T3-E1 FGF23-producing cells to examine the transcriptomic responses to these phosphates. Most importantly, the expression and secretion of FGF23 were only increased in response to organic phosphate. Gene ontology terms related to a response to environmental change were only enriched in cells treated with organic phosphate while cells treated with inorganic phosphate were enriched for terms associated with regulation of cellular phosphate metabolism. Inhibition of MAPK signaling diminished the response of Fgf23 to organic phosphate, suggesting it activates FGF23. TGF-β signaling inhibition increased Fgf23 expression after the addition of organic phosphate, while the negative TGF-β regulator Skil decreased this response. In summary, the observed differential response of FGF23-producing to phosphate types may have consequences for phosphate homeostasis.</p
