Two calculation procedures for the determination of composition and mass thickness of thin samples by x-ray spectrometry

    Get PDF
Two procedures are described for calculating the composition and mass thickness of thin samples from measured x-ray intensities. One procedure is suitable for use with a programmable hand calculator but gives correct results only for very thin samples. The other procedure utilizes the NRLXRF program and produces correct results for thin and thick films

Resilience, Engagement, and Connection: Positive Psychology Tools for Hot Bread Kitchen

    Get PDF
Hot Bread Kitchen (HBK), a not-for-profit in Brooklyn, New York City, provides culinary training to women living below the poverty line as a pathway to jobs in the food services industry. HBK provides wraparound support services, ranging from help with childcare and English language skills through to training in professional readiness skills. HBK’s members are carefully screened, yet some still struggle with the stressful, fast-paced, and multicultural kitchen environment. Based on a review of the literature, we propose a positive psychology plan to strengthen individual and team thriving in the kitchen by developing resilience, engagement, and social connection, using specific activities relating to cognitive-behavioral skills, character strengths, team-building, and meaning and purpose. We provide a library of activities that HBK staff—as experts on their population—can adapt and fit into their evolving curriculum, and a short training for staff, to unite them around goals and approaches

On The Use Of Digital Twin Technology Arielle For The Development Of New Generation Perinatal Life Support Systems

    Get PDF
Perinatal Life Support (PLS) consortium is developing an artificial womb (PLS system) to increase chance of survival of extremely preterm infants (<28 weeks of gestational age). To develop such a complex medical device, knowledge from multidisciplinary fields must integrate into one single system. Mathematical models are used to support this integration by composing a digital twin of the system, named Arielle, to allow computer simulations of the device. Arielle is connected with a manikin to support clinical implementation. For this purpose, a new model named Arielle is proposed as digital twin of the PLS system. This study presents possible applications of Arielle.First the purposes of Arielle are defined and a concept of Arielle and manikin is developed to test and analyze these purposes:1. Arielle should be able to help gaining the necessary knowledge to create an optimal environment for fetal development.2. Arielle should simulate the properties and interactions of components of the PLS system to optimize their desired effect on thestatus of the fetus.3. Arielle should be able to monitor and interpret vital signals of the fetus once integrated in the PLS system.4. Arielle should allow patient specific decision support to inform the user to optimize settings of the PLS system and support interventions. To support the development of the PLS system, Arielle should be able to simulate the fetal physiology and the PLS system to gain knowledge of the fetal physiology and optimize components. When the PLS systemis implemented, Arielle should be able to interpret vital signals and as a patient specific decision support. Future work focuses on the development and evaluation of Arielle with respect to the defined goals

The use of light traps in monitoring abundance of glass eel

Attachment of origins of replication to the nuclear matrix and the chromosomal scaffold

AbstractWe have investigated the attachment of DNA to the nuclear matrix and chromosomal scaffold in synchronized bovine liver cells. Label incorporated at the onset of the S phase remained preferentially associated with the matrix during the subsequent G1 phase and with a residual protein structure from dehistonized chromosomes during mitosis. On the other hand label incorporated during mid or late S phase was about equally distributed over the DNA molecule after a chase into the G1 phase. These results suggest that DNA is attached to the nuclear matrix and chromosome scaffolds by the origins of replication

Therapeutic aspects of gonococcal and non-gonococcal urethritis

The investigations described in this thesis can be divided into two parts. In the first part, the clinical efficacies of enoxacin (a new qninolone), cefodizime (a third generation parenteral cephalosporin) and ceftetrame (a new oral cephalosporin) were assessed in patients with gonococcal urethritis. In the second part, the therapeutic effectiveness of ciprofloxacin (a new quinolone) and roxithromycin (a new macrolide) were assessed in patients with NGU. Susceptibilities of N. gonorrhoeae and C. trachomatis to different antibiotics were also assessed. N. gonorrhoeae and C. rrachomatis strains that were isolated from patients before and after treatment were also tested for possible resistance formation to the particular antibiotic used for treatment. These strains were also typed wherever possible. Side-effects and laboratory abnormalities caused by these trial drugs were also strictly monitored and critically evaluated
