    Exotic bulk viscosity and its influence on neutron star r-modes

    We investigate the effect of exotic matter in particular, hyperon matter on neutron star properties such as equation of state (EoS), mass-radius relationship and bulk viscosity. Here we construct equations of state within the framework of a relativistic field theoretical model. As hyperons are produced abundantly in dense matter, hyperon-hyperon interaction becomes important and is included in this model. Hyperon-hyperon interaction gives rise to a softer EoS which results in a smaller maximum mass neutron star compared with the case without the interaction. Next we compute the coefficient of bulk viscosity and the corresponding damping time scale due to the non-leptonic weak process including Λ\Lambda hyperons. Further, we investigate the role of the bulk viscosity on gravitational radiation driven r-mode instability in a neutron star of given mass and temperature and find that the instability is effectively suppressed.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure, presented in the Conference on Isolated Neutron Stars: From the Interior to The Surface, London, UK, 24-28 April, 2006; revised and final version to appear in Astrophys.     Subchondral Bone Trabecular Integrity Predicts and Changes Concurrently with Radiographic and MRI Determined Knee Osteoarthritis Progression

    OBJECTIVE: To evaluate subchondral bone trabecular integrity (BTI) on radiographs as a predictor of knee osteoarthritis (OA) progression. METHODS: Longitudinal (baseline, 12-month, and 24-month) knee radiographs were available for 60 female subjects with knee OA. OA progression was defined by 12- and 24-month changes in radiographic medial compartment minimal joint space width (JSW) and medial joint space area (JSA), and by medial tibial and femoral cartilage volume on magnetic resonance imaging. BTI of the medial tibial plateau was analyzed by fractal signature analysis using commercially available software. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves for BTI were used to predict a 5% change in OA progression parameters. RESULTS: Individual terms (linear and quadratic) of baseline BTI of vertical trabeculae predicted knee OA progression based on 12- and 24-month changes in JSA (P < 0.01 for 24 months), 24-month change in tibial (P < 0.05), but not femoral, cartilage volume, and 24-month change in JSW (P = 0.05). ROC curves using both terms of baseline BTI predicted a 5% change in the following OA progression parameters over 24 months with high accuracy, as reflected by the area under the curve measures: JSW 81%, JSA 85%, tibial cartilage volume 75%, and femoral cartilage volume 85%. Change in BTI was also significantly associated (P < 0.05) with concurrent change in JSA over 12 and 24 months and with change in tibial cartilage volume over 24 months. CONCLUSION: BTI predicts structural OA progression as determined by radiographic and MRI outcomes. BTI may therefore be worthy of study as an outcome measure for OA studies and clinical trials.     Round-the-clock performance of coronary CT angiography for suspected acute coronary syndrome: Results from the BEACON trial

    Objective: To assess the image quality of coronary CT angiography (CCTA) for suspected acute coronary syndrome (ACS) outside office hours. Methods: Patients with symptoms suggestive of an ACS underwent CCTA at the emergency department 24 hours, 7 days a week. A total of 118 patients, of whom 89 (75 %) presented during office hours (weekdays between 07:00 and 17:00) and 29 (25 %) outside office hours (weekdays between 17:00 and 07:00, weekends and holidays) underwent CCTA. Image quality was evaluated per coronary segment by two experienced readers and graded on an ordinal scale ranging from 1 to 3. Results: There were no significant differences in acquisition parameters, beta-blocker administration or heart rate between patients presenting during office hours and outside office hours. The median quality score per patient was 30.5 [interquartile range 26.0–33.5] for patients presenting during office hours in comparison to 27.5 [19.75–32.0] for patients presenting outside office hours (p=0.043). The number of non-evaluable segments was lower for patients presenting during office hours (0 [0–1.0] vs. 1.0 [0–4.0], p=0.009). Conclusion: Image quality of CCTA outside office hours in the diagnosis of suspected ACS is diminished.     Influence of cementation variables on fatigue of simulated two-unit cantilever resin-bonded fixed partial dentures

    PURPOSE: To determine the influence of various combinations of surface pretreatment and luting cement on flexural fatigue limits of two-unit CoCr cantilever resin-bonded fixed partial dentures. METHODS: Cyclic fatigue tests were performed at 1 Hz on an ACTA fatigue tester. The staircase test method was used on CoCr beams, simulating cantilever resin-bonded fixed partial dentures, using flat ground bovine teeth as substrate. Two series of tests have been executed: (1) 10(4) cycles, and (2) 10(5) cycles. Prior to cementation, the CoCr beams were subjected to either sandblasting or Rocatec or Silicoater treatments. Three commercially available resin luting cements were used. Fatigue tests were performed 72 hours after cementation and storage in 37 degrees C tap water. Each possible combination of cement and pretreatment (n = 20) was tested. RESULTS: One cement, UniFix, showed hardly any debondings with any of the three surface pretreatments. The other two cements, RelyX ARC and Panavia, both showed significantly better performance with Rocatec than when pretreated with sandblasting or Silicoater
