A clinical case of successful treatment of hemicrania continua with ophthalmic symptoms using acupuncture is presented.Chronic headache (CH) is an important medical and social problem. The fact is that CH is treated mainly medication-based. About 63 % of patients have to take analgesic and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs for a long time, while in most cases there are signs of drug overdose, which increases the risk of complications and side effects. The presented clinical case showed the acupuncture effectiveness in hemicrania continua with ophthalmic symptoms in a 23-year-old patient.Since the age of 13, the patient has been observed and repeatedly treated with complaints of persistent headaches on the left, pain in the left eye and decreased vision, accompanied by nausea, dizziness, weakness, fatigue, sleep disturbance. In 2019, against the background of constant daily intake of indomethacin, at a dosage of 9 tablets (225 mg) and a short course of glucocorticosteroids, positive dynamics of the left eye side and relative remission on the part of the pain syndrome were achieved. At the same time, choroidal ischemia with retinal edema persisted, headaches periodically occurred. Acupuncture had been performed during 6 months, 1–2 times every 14–28 days, depending on the patient’s condition, against the background of a gradual reduction in the dose of indomethacin. Complete remission has been achieved. After the end of treatment and complete withdrawal of the drug the patient has been under control for more than 3 months. The patient’s condition is satisfactory, no complaints

At present, significant advances have been made in the surgical and conservative treatment of glaucoma. However, in patients with a prolonged course of the disease, even against the background of normalized intraocular pressure, progressive deterioration of visual functions occurs with the transition of the disease to a more severe stage. Effects directed solely at lowering the intraocular pressure are not able to fully ensure the preservation of visual functions, so its normalization cannot ensure the stabilization of the glaucoma process. Dysfunction of the nervous system and vascular disorders play a significant role in the pathogenesis of glaucoma. In this regard, the treatment of this disease should be comprehensive and include neuroprotective therapy aimed at correction of metabolic disorders that occur in glaucoma in the optic nerve head, improvement of local microcirculation and trophism of tissues, normalization the rheological properties of the blood. Conventional conservative therapy does not provide adequate blood supply to the optic nerve and prevent the deterioration of visual functions in more than half of patients. The purpose of this study was to study the effectiveness of reflexotherapy in patients with glaucoma after surgery and normalization of intraocular pressure. In the study, 18 patients with a diagnosis of primary open-angle glaucoma were treated. It has been established that reflexotherapy improves significantly the functions of the visual system and the general condition, normalizes arterial pressure and psycho-emotional state of patients

This work reports the problem of processing residual wastes after producing carbon ferrochrome by recycling dust using a hydrometallurgical method with the purpose of extracting the basic component - chromium. The X-ray diffraction analysis results, chemical and granulometric compositions of dust from the carbon ferrochrome production are given. The method for the production of chemical-enrichment concentrate (CEC) by processing ferrous dust is described, with obtaining a middling product - sodium mono-chromate with its further reduction to chromium hydroxide, followed by autoclave leaching, and resulting in the production of chemically enriched chrome concentrate. The plant used for autoclave leaching and filtering is schematically depicted. The smelting process of metallic chromium using the ladle aluminothermic method is described

The aim of the study. To study the effect of high nitric oxide concentrations on hollow polypropylene fibers of oxygenators.Materials and methods. The study was conducted in two stages. At the first stage, we evaluated the stability of oxygenator membrane made of hollow polypropylene fibers after six hours of exposure to air-oxygen mixture containing NO at 500 parts per million, or 500 pro pro mille (ppm) concentration, using mass spectrometry and infrared spectroscopy. At the second stage, an experiment with cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) was conducted on 10 pigs. In the study group (n=5) animals sweep gas was supplied to the oxygenator as an air-oxygen mixture with NO at 100 ppm. In the control group animals (n=5) an air-oxygen mixture was used without NO. The CPB lasted for 4 hours, followed by observation for 12 hours. NO, NO2 (at the inlet and outlet of the oxygenator), and the dynamics of methemoglobin were evaluated. After weaning of animals from CPB, the oxygenators were tested for leakproofness, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was performed.Results. The oxygenator made of polypropylene hollow fibers retained its gas transfer parameters after six hours of exposure to air-oxygen mixture containing NO at 500 ppm. Based on IR-Fourier spectroscopy findings, NO did not affect structural integrity of polypropylene membranes. NO added to gas mixture at 100 ppm did not increase NO2 to toxic level of 2 ppm in 91% of control tests during 4 hours CPB in pigs; mean value was 1.58 ± 0.28 ppm. Methemoglobin concentration did not exceed the upper limit of permissible level (3%), and there were no statistically significant differences with the control group. All tested oxygenators have passed the leakproofness test. According to SEM findings, larger amounts of fibrin deposits were found in the control group oxygenators vs study group.Conclusion. There were no negative effects of NO at 500 ppm concentration on the oxygenator membrane made of hollow polypropylene fibers. NO at 100 ppm in a gas-mixture supplied to oxygenators did not lead to an exceedance of safe NO2 and methemoglobin concentrations in an animal model. Reduced fibrin deposits on hollow fibers of polypropylene oxygenator membranes were observed when with NO at a level of 100 ppm was added to a gas mixture.

This paper presents an investigation of the temperature dependence of the oligomeric state of the horseradish peroxidase (HRP) enzyme on the temperature of its solution, and on the solution storage time, at the single-molecule level. Atomic force microscopy has been employed to determine how the temperature and the storage time of the HRP solution influence its aggregation upon direct adsorption of the enzyme from the solution onto bare mica substrates. In parallel, spectrophotometric measurements have been performed in order to estimate whether the HRP enzymatic activity changes over time upon the storage of the enzyme solution. The temperature dependence of the HRP oligomeric state has been studied within a broad (15–40 °C) temperature range. It has been demonstrated that the storage of the HRP solution for 14 days does not have any considerable effect on the oligomeric state of the enzyme, neither does it affect its activity. At longer storage times, AFM has allowed us to reveal a tendency of HRP to oligomerization during the storage of its buffered solution, while the enzymatic activity remains virtually unchanged even after a 1-month-long storage. By AFM, it has been revealed that after the incubation of a mica substrate in the HRP solution at various temperatures, the content of the mica-adsorbed oligomers increases insignificantly owing to a high-temperature stability of the enzyme

Structure and gene cluster of the O antigen of E. Coli L-19, a candidate for a new O-serogroup

Escherichia coli L-19 isolated from a healthy individual did not agglutinate with any of 21 polyvalent antisera that cover 174 E. coli O-serogroups. The strain was studied in respect to the O-antigen (O-specific polysaccharide, OPS) structure and genetics. The LPS was isolated by phenol–water extraction of bacterial cells and cleaved by mild acid hydrolysis to yield the OPS. The OPS was studied by sugar and methylation analyses, along with 1D and 2D 1 H and 13C NMR spectroscopy. The established structure of the linear tetrasaccharide repeating unit was found to be unique among known bacterial polysaccharide structures. A peculiar component of the L-19 OPS was an amide of glucuronic acid with 2-amino-1,3-propanediol (2-amino-2-deoxyglycerol) (GroN). The O-antigen gene cluster of L-19 between the conserved genes galF and gnd was sequenced, and gene functions were tentatively assigned by a comparison with sequences in the available databases and found to be in agreement with the OPS structure. Except for putative genes for synthesis and transfer of GroN, the sequences in the L-19 O-antigen gene cluster were little related to those of reference strains of the 174 known E. coli O-serogroups. The data obtained suggest that L-19 can be considered as a candidate for a new E. coli O-serogroup

Analysis of Single Biomacromolecules and Viruses: Is It a Myth or Reality?

    No full text
The beginning of the twenty-first century witnessed novel breakthrough research directions in the life sciences, such as genomics, transcriptomics, translatomics, proteomics, metabolomics, and bioinformatics. A newly developed single-molecule approach addresses the physical and chemical properties and the functional activity of single (individual) biomacromolecules and viral particles. Within the alternative approach, the combination of “single-molecule approaches” is opposed to “omics approaches”. This new approach is fundamentally unique in terms of its research object (a single biomacromolecule). Most studies are currently performed using postgenomic technologies that allow the properties of several hundreds of millions or even billions of biomacromolecules to be analyzed. This paper discusses the relevance and theoretical, methodological, and practical issues related to the development potential of a single-molecule approach using methods based on molecular detectors
