Typology of Medium-Sized Cities in Spain Using PCA (Principal Component Analysis)
[EN] This article analyses processes of change undergone by Spanish medium-sized cities during
1981–2011 on the one hand, and 2000–2018 on the other, as they are different sources. We established a
classification to show the importance of this type of city starting from the hypothesis that the process
is a generalised one in which they behave according to their position in the territory. The dynamics
of change are predominantly associated with contexts of economic expansion. The typology was
generated based on population and housing variables, which synthesise the role played by economic
activity in each city. Additional methodologies were used: firstly, the bibliography on medium-sized
cities in different social and cultural contexts was reviewed; secondly, statistical data were selected,
compiled and processed using multivariant statistical analyses, and the results mapped. A study of
133 cities was carried out and absolute values and variation rates used to understand the processes
of change. As a result, seven representative groups were obtained. The conclusions of the study can
be corroborated by different sources.S
The application of principal component analysis (PCA) for the study of the spanish tourist demand
P. 43-52The objective of this study is the characterisation of the Spanish autonomous communities as tourist destinations
for Spanish trips, based on the activities carried out, using the principal component method. The Spanish tourist is
not only motivated by the sun and beach. This paper aims to clarify how Spanish people consider other tourist destinations.
We contrast how frequently other types of tourism are valued when choosing their destination within the Spanish
geography. Inland tourism, sports tourism, entertainment as well as gastronomy are becoming increasingly important.S
People over 65 years of age in Spain: a regional exploratory approach
[EN] Rapid population ageing is transforming societies and bringing into question existing
approaches to economic development and sustainable growth. In 2014, the Organisation for Economic
Cooperation and Development (OECD) and the Global Coalition on Aging (GCOA) defined a new
concept, the Silver Economy (OECD, 2014), which highlights the challenges and opportunities of
societies in the XXI century, in which the population aged 65 and over account for more than 50% of
consumption. Healthy and active ageing can drive long-term productivity and age-friendly environments
enable older people to age safely in a place that is right for them (WHO, 2021). Therefore, 2021-2030
has been declared the Decade of healthy ageing, research into healthy ageing being a key point in
identifying the current needs of the elderly and linking their economic conditions and social factors to
assess actions that will improve the road towards healthy ageing (WHO, 2020). In the case of Spain, the
division of the territory into autonomous communities determines the characteristics of this population
group (MAPFRE, 2021). In this context, the purpose of the present paper is established: an analysis of
the characteristics of people over 65 years of age in Spain, based on a regional approach. Considering the
data available for the Spanish autonomous communities, provided by the National Statistics Institute
(INE) and Institute for Older Persons and Social Services (IMSERSO), the analysis focuses on the study
of the characteristics of elderly people in order to describe and classify the 17 Spanish autonomous
communities. For this purpose, Multiple Factor Analysis (MFA) and Cluster Analysis (Ward’s
hierarchical method) were conducted. The study concludes that the autonomous communities can be
classified into six different groups: demographical differences are important, but so are some aspects
concerning longevity and assistance.S
Dimensions of the Spanish tourist demand: characterization of the autonomous communities according to the motivation of Spanish travelers (2016)
del análisis se han identificado dimensiones de demanda relacionadas con el ocio: búsqueda de sol y playa;
turismo de naturaleza y/o deportivo, y turismo cultural. Y también dimensiones de motivación profesional
y personal: motivos profesiones y visita a familiares y amigos.
[EN] The objective of this study is to identify the dimensions that motivate Spanish tourist demand by
autonomous community of destination, from the trips as made by Spanish travellers recorded by the Resident
Tourism Survey (ETR) for the year 2016, as prepared by the National Statistics Institute. The nature of the
data requires the use of appropriate statistical methodology: the factorial technique called Simple Correspondence
Analysis. After this analysis, the dimensions of the demand related to leisure were identified as pursuit
of sun and sand; nature and / or sports tourism, and cultural tourism together with professional reasons and
personal dimensions of visits to family and friends. These dimensions allow us to characterise each Spanish
autonomous community according to national tourism demand, and to analyse their relative competitive position
in relation to the diversity and structure of their tourism offer. The results obtained are a starting point for
other research in subsequent years, given that the year analysed is the first with complete RTE data.S

[EN] The paper analyses processes of expansion and delimitation of urban areas in a group of medium-sized Spanish inner cities. The object of interest is the dynamics in these municipalities, their typology, and territorial scope. Census data on population and housing between 1981 and 2011 have been used. The methodology is a scatter diagram based on a model that links each city with the behaviour of the municipalities surrounding it. The bibliography on urban dispersion processes in different contexts is reviewed. The scope of analysis is 30 km around each of the 70 cities chosen, with populations of between fifty and three hundred thousand inhabitants. The results enable a proposed urban area to be established and four types of municipalities to be identified based on their housing and population dynamics.S
Capturing yeast associated with grapes and spontaneous fermentations of the Negro Saurí minority variety from an experimental vineyard near León
[EN] ‘Microbial terroir’ relates to the influence of autochthonous yeasts associated with a grape cultivar on the resultant wine. Geographic region, vineyard site and topography, climate and vintage influence the biodiversity of these microbial communities. Current research focus attempts to correlate their ‘microbial fingerprint’ to the sensorial and chemical characteristics of varietal wines from distinct geographical wine regions. This study focuses on the minor red grape variety, Negro Saurí, which has seen a resurgence in the León Appellation of Origin in Spain as a varietal wine. An experimental vineyard at Melgarajo S.A. (42° 15′ 48.68_N 5° 9′ 56.66_W) was sampled over four consecutive vintages, with autochthonous yeasts being isolated from grapes, must and pilot-scale un-inoculated fermentations, and identified by ITS sequencing. Forty-nine isolates belonging to Metschnikowia pulcherrima, Lachancea thermotolerans, Hanseniaspora uvarum and Torulaspora delbrueckii were isolated from grapes and must, and early stages of fermentation dependent on seasonal variation. Saccharomyces cerevisiae predominated throughout fermentation, as a heterogeneous and dynamic population, with seven major biotypes identified amongst 110 isolates across four consecutive vintages. Twenty-four S. cerevisiae isolates representing five strains dominated in two or more vintages. Their persistence through fermentation warrants further validation of their oenological properties as starter cultures.S
