    Child Maltreatment Histories Among Female Inmate Reporting Inmate on Inmate Sexual Victimization in Prison: The Mediating Role of Emotion Dysregulation

    Despite data indicating that child maltreatment (CM) in various forms is associated with adult sexual victimization among community women, few studies have explicitly explored how types of CM might relate to prison sexual victimization. Because little is known about how CM might give rise to prison sexual victimization, the present study also examined emotion dysregulation emanating from early abuse experiences as a potential mediator in the link between early CM and inmate-on-inmate prison sexual victimization. Approximately 168 incarcerated women completed self-report inventories assessing various types of childhood maltreatment, emotion dysregulation, and coerced or forced sexual experiences in prison. Nearly 77% of the sample endorsed experiencing at least one form of CM, with 64% of inmates reporting that they experienced two or more forms of CM. Approximately 9% of inmates reported sexual coercion and 22% reported a forced sexual experience in prison. Each form of CM was associated with prison sexual coercion; however, fewer associations emerged between CM and forced prison sexual experiences. Emotion dysregulation was found to mediate links between CM, particularly co-occurring CM, and sexual coercion in prison, but it was unrelated to forced prison sexual experiences. Implications are discussed

    Exploring the Use of Online Sexually Explicit Material: What Is the Relationship to Sexual Coercion?

    With the popularity of the Internet, it is easy to access online sexually explicit material (OSEM). However, little is known about the possible relationship that viewing OSEM may have to sexually coercive behaviors. The purpose of this study was to examine whether the viewing habits of OSEM related to self-reported sexual aggression. Results indicated that individuals who identified as having engaged in sexually aggressive behavior endorsed more online sexually compulsive behaviors. Analyses revealed that the amount, as opposed to the type, of OSEM viewed appears to be more related to adverse outcomes. Additionally, sexually aggressive individuals reported viewing a greater range of OSEM content and engaging in a broader range of OSEM behaviors compared to those who engaged in less sexual coercion

    Exploring online sexually explicit material: What is the relationship to sexual coercion?

    With the popularity of the Internet, it is easy to access sexually explicit material. Past research has demonstrated that exposure to sexually explicit material in traditional formats (i.e. magazines and videos) may have an influence on male attitudes and behaviors towards females, but these effects appear to be minimal and dissipate over the long term. Though the body of literature examining Internet sexually explicit material is smaller, researchers have found little to no effects on attitudes or aggressive behaviors immediately after exposure. However, research regarding exposure to online sexually explicit material has not included forensically relevant variables. Previous research has suggested that undergraduate males who report engaging in sexually coercive or aggressive behaviors differ in terms of personality, attitudinal, and behavioral variables from individuals who do not report this type of behavior. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to examine the same personality and attitudinal variables that have been studied in previous research, but to extend this research by including behavioral variables related to the viewing of online sexually explicit material. Male undergraduate students were provided with a link to take an online survey examining personality (empathy, sensation-seeking, and psychopathy), attitudinal (rape myth belief, acceptance of interpersonal violence, and hostility towards women) and behavioral (online sexual compulsivity and online behaviors with regard to sexual material) variables. The relationship between these variables and sexually coercive behavior was examined. Results indicate there is a significant relationship between some scales related to empathy and viewing sexually explicit or degrading material. Further results indicated that individuals who identified as having engaged in sexually aggressive behavior endorsed more items related to online sexually compulsive behaviors. Exploratory analyses revealed that the amount, as opposed to the type, of sexually explicit material viewed appears to be more related to adverse outcomes

    Studies on the super-sulphur battery

    The main work contained in this thesis was the collection of data used to measure the current distribution along the length of a 27Ah tubular sodium-sulphur cell. This was carried out using voltage probes monitoring the potential differences at different discharge/charge rates. The preparation and identification (by Raman spectroscopy) of sodium polysulphides, Na2Sx where x&#61; 2 to 5, have been carried out and also attempts were made to find the actual composition of a polysulphide melt of known stoichiometry. This was done by converting a polysulphide melt of known composition into sulphanes, H2Sx, and analysing these by proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR) and high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). A UV/Vis spectroscopic analysis of Na2Sx in various solvents was made. The inter-diffusion coefficient, DNa/s, in a sodium tetrasulphide melt was also measured.</p

    Suicide Attempts and Self-Harm Behaviors in Psychiatric Sex Offenders

    Suicidality and self-harm behaviors among sex offenders remain underreported in the clinical literature and are often misunderstood in this complex population. The present study aims to identify rates of suicide attempts and self-injurious behaviors in a sample of 1,184 psychiatric inpatients, 462 of whom are sexual offenders. Between-group comparisons revealed significant differences in history of suicide attempts and self-harm behaviors, with sexual offenders evidencing greater rates of both. Significant psychiatric correlates of suicide attempts and self-harm behaviors among sex offenders varied by group and included a variety of psychiatric symptom presentations. These are compared with the general literature on suicide risk and the sex offender population. Implications for treatment of these behaviors in a sex offender population are discussed

    Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT; Linehan, 1993) is an empirically supported, skills based, cognitive-behavioral therapy used to treat a myriad of symptoms including chronic suicidality and self-harm, emotion dysregulation, reactive aggression and other mood dependent behaviors. Because of its emphasis on self-regulation and a wide range of problem behaviors, DBT can be readily applied to sex offender treatment programming. In this workshop, participants will learn about DBT’s method of conceptualizing and addressing client problems, important strategies for engaging offenders in treatment using this approach, and DBT skills. Important updates from the most recent DBT skills manual will also be addressed. be discussed

    Got DBT? Understanding and applying Dialectical Behavior Therapy in sex offender treatment

    Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT; Linehan, 1993) is an empirically supported skills-based, cognitive-behavioral therapy originally developed for use with clients with borderline personality disorder and associated self-harm behavior. Its unique combination of individual therapy, skills group, in vivo skills coaching, and support for the therapists in the form of a weekly consultation team meeting, provide a comprehensive framework for treating difficult behaviors in a client population who do not demonstrate positive outcomes when participating in traditional psychotherapy practice. Multiple randomized control trials have demonstrated its effectiveness in reducing chronic suicidality and self-harm, particularly among those with personality pathology and substance abuse problems. Since its initial use, DBT has been applied to a myriad of treatment needs, including emotion dysregulation, reactive aggression, and other mood-dependent behavior. Recent evidence indicates that self-regulatory problems are quite common among sexual offenders (Stinson, Becker, & Sales, 2008; Stinson, Robbins, & Crow, 2011; Stinson, Sales, & Becker, 2008; Ward & Hudson, 2007), including difficulties with emotion regulation, violent and sexual aggression, interpersonal skills deficits, suicidality, and problems with substance use. Sex offenders benefit from DBT’s emphasis on self-monitoring, interpersonal and emotional skills development, and the use of a hierarchical treatment structure that addresses multiple behavioral problems and life concerns. Further, some sex offenders – particularly those who present with personality pathology or pronounced self-regulatory deficits – may be unable to meaningfully engage in sex offender specific treatment until they address more acute symptomatology. DBT presents an interesting new take on addressing complex emotional and behavioral problems in adolescent and adult sex offenders. Therapists using DBT benefit from a comprehensive and empirically-supported framework, as well as techniques specifically designed to protect clinicians from the burn-out so often associated with treating challenging and high-risk clients. But admittedly, for those unfamiliar with DBT, this novel way of conceptualizing and addressing sex offender clients can be difficult. The primary objective of this workshop is to introduce sex offender therapists to the tenets of DBT and facilitate the implementation of DBT principles and techniques in sex offender treatment. A secondary goal is to familiarize practiced DBT therapists with recent updates to the DBT skills manual
