    Design and Characterization of 1.8-3.2 THz Schottky-based Harmonic Mixers

    A room-temperature Schottky diode-based WM-86 (WR-0.34) harmonic mixer was developed to build high-resolution spectrometers, and multi-pixel receivers in the THz region for applications such as radio astronomy, plasma diagnostics, and remote sensing. The mixer consists of a quartz-based Local Oscillator (LO), Intermediate-Frequency (IF) circuits, and a GaAs-based beam-lead THz circuit with an integrated diode. Measurements of the harmonic mixer were performed using a 2 THz solid-state source and 2.6906 THz QCL. A conversion loss of 27 dB for the 3rd harmonic mixing and a conversion loss of 30 dB for the 4th harmonic mixing was achieved. This is the first development of a wideband WM-86 (WR-0.34) harmonic mixer with planar Schottky diode integrated on a beam-lead THz circuit that uses a lower LO harmonic factor for 1.8-3.2 THz RF frequency. Furthermore, this result represents the best Schottky-based mixer in this frequency range

    Modelling of essential fish habitat based on remote sensing, spatial analysis and GIS

    We review the variety of existing modelling approaches applied to species habitat mapping and we discuss issues arising from the availability and nature of sampled biological data and corresponding ecological and environmental habitat descriptors, as well as the different spatial analysis approaches that are selected according to specific hypotheses. We focus on marine species habitat mapping, presenting an overview of work on modelling fish habitat carried out through a European Communities Policy-Support Action, EnviEFH 'Environmental Approach to Essential Fish Habitat (EFH) Designation' (2005-2008). The selection of the appropriate habitat model is dataset-specific and the resulting EFH maps are often similar in spite of using different models. Derived EFH maps are based on either environmental ranges (used as minimum and maximum environmental habitat descriptors) or probability of occurrence values. We apply model outputs to regions larger than sampled areas making use of the capacity of satellite data to cover wide areas. © 2008 Springer Science+Business Media B.V

    Liquid-Crystal-Based Controllable Attenuators Operating in the 1-4 Terahertz Band

    Liquid-crystal devices (LCDs) offer a potential route toward adaptive optical components for use in the < 2 THz band of the electromagnetic spectrum. We demonstrate LCDs using a commercially available material (E7), with unbiased birefringence values of 0.14-0.18 in the 0.3-4 THz band. We exploit the linear dichroism of the material to modulate the emission from a 3.4-THz quantum cascade laser by up to 40%, dependent upon both the liquid-crystal layer thickness and the bias voltage applied.Comment: 10 pages, 6 figure

    Distribution and abundance of cephalopods in UK waters: long-term trends and environmental relationships

    As part of a project which aimed to evaluate the feasibility of developing indicators of marine ecosystem status based on cephalopods, we analysed spatiotemporal variation in abundance,, and environmental relationships, using trawl survey catch data for cephalopods in UK waters (1980-2013) from Cefas and Marine Scotland Science databases. These data presented some challenges, notably the use of several different trawl gears, variable tow durations, and varying levels of taxonomic resolution. Accounting for gear type and tow duration, data were analysed separately for each cephalopod family and season to account for different phases of the life cycles being present at different times of year. The families investigated were Loliginidae, Octopodidae, Ommastrephidade, Sepiidae and Sepiolidae. A GAM framework was used to summarise spatiotemporal variation in abundance at family level and the relationships of spatial and long-term temporal variation with environmental variables, including depth, substrate (available for inshore waters) and several oceanographic variables (e.g., SST, chl signals), also considering fishing pressure. Long-term trends for each family varied between areas and seasons, although this may reflect the presence of several species within families. In Scotland, where Loligo vulgaris is rare and L. forbesii is normally distinguished from Alloteuthis spp., survey data suggested a peak in abundance of this species around 1990 and a generally increasing trend since the mid-1990s. Spatial patterns in distribution in all families were related to both physiographic and oceanographic features.     Partial “targeted” embolisation of brain arteriovenous malformations

    The treatment of pial arteriovenous brain malformations is controversial. Little is yet known about their natural history, their pathomechanisms and the efficacy and risks of respective proposed treatments. It is known that only complete occlusion of the AVM can exclude future risk of haemorrhage and that the rates of curative embolisation of AVMs with an acceptable periprocedural risk are around 20 to 50%. As outlined in the present article, however, partial, targeted embolisation also plays a role. In acutely ruptured AVMs where the source of bleeding can be identified, targeted embolisation of this compartment may be able to secure the AVM prior to definitive treatment. In unruptured symptomatic AVMs targeted treatment may be employed if a defined pathomechanism can be identified that is related to the clinical symptoms and that can be cured with an acceptable risk via an endovascular approach depending on the individual AVM angioarchitecture. This review article gives examples of pathomechanisms and angioarchitectures that are amenable to this kind of treatment strategy

    Brace technology thematic series: the dynamic derotation brace

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The dynamic derotation brace (DDB) was designed in Greece in 1982, as a modification of the Boston brace. It is a custom-made, underarm spinal orthosis featuring aluminium blades set to produce derotating and anti-rotating effects on the thorax and trunk of patients with scoliosis. It is indicated for the non-operative correction of most curves, barring the very high thoracic ones, (when the apex vertebra is T5 or above). The purpose of this article is to familiarize physicians with the DDB, analyze the rationale behind its design, and present the published results of its application.</p> <p>Description & Principles</p> <p>The key feature of the DDB is the addition of the aluminium-made derotating blades posteriorly. These function as a force couple, which is added to the side forces exerted by the brace itself. Corrective forces are also directed through pads. One or more of previously proposed pathomechanical models of scoliosis may underline the corrective function of the DDB: it may act directly on the apical intervertebral disc, effecting correction through the Heuter-Volkman principle; the blades may produce an anti-rotatory element against the deforming "spiral composite muscle trunk rotator"; or it may alter the neuro-motor response by constantly providing new somatosensory input to the patient.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Based on measurements of the Cobb and Perdriolle angles, up to 82% of patients remained stable or improved with the use of the DDB. Results have varied, though, depending on the type/location of the deformity. The overall results showed that 35% of the curves improved, 46% remained stable and 18% became worse, as assessed by measuring the Cobb angle. The DDB has also been shown to improve cosmesis (except for right thoracic curves) and leave several aspects of patient quality of life unaffected during use.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Conservative treatment of idiopathic scoliosis using the DDB has shown favorable results. Thoracic curves appear more resistant to both angular and rotatory correction. The published outcome data on the DDB support our belief that the incorporation of aluminium blades to other orthoses would likely improve their efficacy.</p
