    Computer programs were developed to implement the computational scheme arising from Van Holten's asymptotic method for calculating airloads on a helicopter rotor blade in forward flight, and a similar technique which is based on a discretized version of the method. The basic outlines of the two programs are presented, followed by separate descriptions of the input requirements and output format. Two examples illustrating job entry with appropriate input data and corresponding output are included. Appendices contain a sample table of lift coefficient data for the NACA 0012 air foil and listings of the two programs

    The numerical practicality of a matched asymptotic expansion approach for the computation of unsteady three dimensional airloads on a helicopter rotor was improved. This effort utilizes a discretized repesentation of the doublet strength distribution and helical streamlines to decrease the computational requirements of the original analysis. The continuous variation of the doublet strength was approximated by piecewise constant or piecewise quadratic distributions, and the helical trajectory of a fluid particle was approximated by connected straight line segments. As a direct result of these simplified representations the computational time required for the execution of a typical flight condition was reduced by an order of magnitude with respect to the requirements of the original analysis. Airloads which were computed using the discretized method for a two bladed model rotor and a full scale four bladed rotor are in close agreement with measured results and airloads from the original asymptotic analysis. For conditions characterized by significant rotor/wake interaction the piecewise constant representation requires a reduced azimuth spacing to maintain acceptable accuracy

    Structure/permeability relationships of silicon-containing polyimides

    The permeability to H2, O2, N2, CO2 and CH4 of three silicone-polyimide random copolymers and two polyimides containing silicon atoms in their backbone chains, was determined at 35.0 C and at pressures up to about 120 psig (approximately 8.2 atm). The copolymers contained different amounts of BPADA-m-PDA and amine-terminated poly (dimethyl siloxane) and also had different numbers of siloxane linkages in their silicone component. The polyimides containing silicon atoms (silicon-modified polyimides) were SiDA-4,4'-ODA and SiDA-p-PDA. The gas permeability and selectivity of the copolymers are more similar to those of their silicone component than of the polyimide component. By contrast, the permeability and selectivity of the silicon-modified polyimides are more similar to those of their parent polyimides, PMDA-4,4'-ODA and SiDA-p-PDA. The substitution of SiDA for the PMDA moiety in a polyimide appears to result in a significant increase in gas permeability, without a correspondingly large decrease in selectivity. The potential usefulness of the above polymers and copolymers as gas separation membranes is discussed

    Superelastic response of 111 and 101 oriented NiTi micropillars

    A combination of microcompression experiments on single crystal micron-scaled pillars of NiTi of known orientations and in situ neutron diffraction during loading of the same NiTi but in bulk, polycrystalline form are carried out to understand the stress-induced transformation associated with superelasticity at reduced length scales. At the length scales investigated, there is evidence through this work of a fully reversible stress-induced transformation from B2 to B19\u27 NiTi that does not involve additional dislocation activity or irrecoverable strains. The orientation dependence of the elastic deformation of the 82 phase, the onset of its transformation to the B19\u27 phase, the gradient and the hysteresis in the stress-strain response during transformation, the elastic modulus of the stress-induced B19\u27 phase and the onset of plasticity are quantified and analyzed in these experiments by examining the crystallography of the B2 to B19\u27 transformation

    The elastic modulus of B19\u27 shape-memory NiTi was determined using three techniques; from the response of lattice planes measured using in situ neutron diffraction during loading, instrumented indentation using a spherical indenter and macroscopic extensometry. The macroscopic measurements resulted in a modulus of 68 GPa, significantly less than the 101 GPa from indentation and the lattice plane average of 109 GPa from neutron diffraction. Evidence from the neutron measurements suggests that the disparity derives from the onset of small amounts of twinning at stresses less that 40 MPa, which might otherwise be considered elastic from a macroscopic view point

    Efficacy of qualitative response assessment interpretation criteria at 18F-FDG PET-CT for predicting outcome in locally advanced cervical carcinoma treated with chemoradiotherapy

    Objectives: To evaluate the utility of a standardized qualitative scoring system for treatment response assessment at 18F-FDG PET-CT in patients undergoing chemoradiotherapy for locally advanced cervical carcinoma and correlate this with subsequent patient outcome. Methods: Ninety-six consecutive patients with locally advanced cervical carcinoma treated with radical chemoradiotherapy (CRT) in a single centre between 2011 and 2014 underwent 18F-FDG PET-CT approximately 3 months post-treatment. Tumour metabolic response was assessed qualitatively using a 5-point scale ranging from background level activity only through to progressive metabolic disease. Clinical and radiological (MRI pelvis) follow-up was performed in all patients. Progression-free (PFS) and overall survival (OS) was calculated using the Kaplan-Meier method (Mantel-Cox log-rank) and correlated with qualitative score using Chi-squared test. Results: Forty patients (41.7 %) demonstrated complete metabolic response (CMR) on post-treatment PET-CT (Score 1/2) with 38 patients (95.0 %) remaining disease free after a minimum follow-up period of 18 months. Twenty-four patients (25.0 %) had indeterminate residual uptake (ID, Score 3) at primary or nodal sites after treatment, of these eight patients (33.3 %) relapsed on follow-up, including all patients with residual nodal uptake (n = 4Eleven11 of 17 patients (64.7 %) with significant residual uptake (partial metabolic response, PMR, Score 4) subsequently relapsed. In 15 patients (15.6 %) PET-CT demonstrated progressive disease (PD, Score 5) following treatment. Kaplan-Meier analysis showed a highly statistically significant difference in PFS and OS between patients with CMR, indeterminate uptake, PMR and PD (Log-rank, P < 0.0001). Chi-squared test demonstrated a highly statistically significant association between increasing qualitative score and risk of recurrence or death (P < 0.001). Conclusion: Use of a 5-point qualitative scoring system to assess metabolic response to CRT in locally advanced cervical carcinoma predicts survival outcome and this prognostic information may help guide further patient management

    Deformation in the P3 phase (R-phase) of NiTiFe was investigated by in situ neutron diffraction during compressive loading at cryogenic temperatures. At 216 K, upon loading the R-phase detwinned and subsequently underwent a reversible stress-induced transformation to the B19\u27 phase (martensite). At 92 K on the other hand, detwinning was suppressed and the stress-induced martensite formed did not transform back upon unloading. The experiments also directly observed a hitherto theoretically predicted B33 phase. Rietveld refinement of the neutron diffraction spectra were used to determine lattice parameters of the B33 and R-phases. Plane-specific elastic moduli were also determined for the R-phase

    Diaphragmatic fenestration an effective treatment for refractory postoperative chylothorax: a case report

    Postoperative chylothorax remains a clinical challenge to the surgeon with substantial morbidity and risk of mortality. Though an uncommon complication, it is known to complicate cardiac and non-cardiac thoracic surgeries. Conservative measures are first employed in managing this. Surgical options are adopted when the effusion is protracted, most recent of which includes diaphragmatic fenestration. A 9-year-old girl is presented who developed recurrent right chylothorax following thoracoscopic excision of a cystic lymphangioma. Following failed conservative therapy, she had thoracic duct ligation and right diaphragmatic fenestration (using fenestrated polytetrafluoroethylene patch) with satisfactory outcome. Aetio-pathologic mechanisms implicated in postoperative chylothorax have been classified into traumatic (iatrogenic injury to the thoracic duct or its branches) and non-traumatic. With initial conservative measures (repeated pleural aspirations and intercostal drainage, medium chain triglyceride/ low fat feeds or alternatively, fasting and total parenteral nutrition) spontaneous closure remains unpredictable. Diaphragmatic fenestration when employed resulted in faster resolution of effusion and earlier commencement of enteral feeding with no significant complication. Diaphragmatic fenestration is effective and safe for treating refractory post-operative chylothorax

    Post-treatment FDG PET-CT in head and neck carcinoma: comparative analysis of 4 qualitative interpretative criteria in a large patient cohort

    There is no consensus regarding optimal interpretative criteria (IC) for Fluorine-18 fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) Positron Emission Tomography – Computed Tomography (PET-CT) response assessment following (chemo)radiotherapy (CRT) for head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC). The aim was to compare accuracy of IC (NI-RADS, Porceddu, Hopkins, Deauville) for predicting loco-regional control and progression free survival (PFS). All patients with histologically confirmed HNSCC treated at a specialist cancer centre with curative-intent non-surgical treatment who underwent baseline and response assessment FDG PET-CT between August 2008 and May 2017 were included. Metabolic response was assessed using 4 different IC harmonised into 4-point scales (complete response, indeterminate, partial response, progressive disease). IC performance metrics (sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value (PPV), negative predictive value (NPV), accuracy) were compared. Kaplan-Meier and Cox proportional hazards regression analyses were performed for survival analysis. 562 patients were included (397 oropharynx, 53 hypopharynx, 48 larynx, 64 other/unknown primary). 420 patients (75%) received CRT and 142 (25%) had radiotherapy alone. Median follow-up was 26 months (range 3–148). 156 patients (28%) progressed during follow-up. All IC were accurate for prediction of primary tumour (mean NPV 85.0% (84.6–85.3), PPV 85.0% (82.5–92.3), accuracy 84.9% (84.2–86.0)) and nodal outcome (mean NPV 85.6% (84.1–86.6), PPV 94.7% (93.8–95.1), accuracy 86.8% (85.6–88.0)). Number of indeterminate scores for NI-RADS, Porceddu, Deauville and Hopkins were 91, 25, 20, 13 and 55, 70, 18 and 3 for primary tumour and nodes respectively. PPV was significantly reduced for indeterminate uptake across all IC (mean PPV primary tumour 36%, nodes 48%). Survival analyses showed significant differences in PFS between response categories classified by each of the four IC (p <0.001). All four IC have similar diagnostic performance characteristics although Porceddu and Deauville scores offered the best trade off of minimising indeterminate outcomes whilst maintaining a high NPV
