Impossible Possible Machines

Arguing against the current paradigm of computationalism, the article revisits Alexandre Koyré’s history of European techno-rationality and 17th-century figures like Descartes and Galileo. Here, one finds the machine emerging at precisely the time and place in history where the gap between mathematical-geometrical idealization and the reality of bodies and experiments first appeared. Historically, the machine is rooted in theatrical mechanics of simulation, illusion, fiction, and deception. Structurally, it appears in between subject and object, the ‘thinking’ and the ‘mechanical’ substances. With the machine, mathematical science becomes possible because it creates an outside or model to the theoretical inside of European science

Constructing the invisible - Computer graphics and the end of Optical Media

This media archaeology of early computer graphics tackles the relation between the imaginary and technical media. We focus on the algorithmic procedures and mathematical principles driving 3D computer graphics during the 1970’s and we frame them in a discussion about the end of optical media and a reflection on the current situation in which images, commanded by techno-codes, delineate and structure the dominant code of communication with which we imagine. Even though algorithmic simulations of optical worlds do not represent the end of optical media as Friedrich Kittler once argued, computer graphics can be seen retrospectively as an escalation in the production of invisibility. We introduce Frieder Nake’s concept of ‘subfaces’ to describe digital images as entities that are composed out of visible and invisible processes. The subface constitutes our methodological tool to analyze computer graphics historically, through three early problems of 3D computer graphics. Rendre invisible – L’infographie et la fin des Médias optiques

L’article relit la thèse de Kittler selon laquelle l’avènement des médias optiques constituerait la fin des beaux-arts à partir d’un texte contemporain aux Médias optiques. Cours berlinois 1999 : « Infographie. Une introduction semi-technique ». Les auteurs interrogent l’idée selon laquelle les médias optiques trouveraient leur fin dans les procédés algorithmiques de l’infographie, et développent une réflexion sur la surface de l’image et ses dessous techniques. Dans un premier temps, ils examinent la sous-face de l’image à partir de trois problèmes rencontrés par l’infographie à ses débuts. Puis ils explorent les enjeux de l’historiographie kittlérienne des médias optiques et de leur fin présumée dans l’infographie, du point de vue de la philosophie du sujet et de sa disparition. Ces analyses sont l’occasion d’une discussion autour des réflexions de Vilém Flusser sur la techno-imagination ainsi que des travaux de l’artiste contemporaine Hito Steyerl sur les techniques d’invisibilisation
