Design, Synthesis, and Isomerization Studies of Light-Driven Molecular Motors for Single Molecular Imaging
The design of a multicomponent system that aims at the direct visualization of a synthetic rotary motor at the single molecule level on surfaces is presented. The synthesis of two functional motors enabling photochemical rotation and fluorescent detection is described. The light-driven molecular motor is found to operate in the presence of a fluorescent tag if a rigid long rod (32 angstrom) is installed between both photoactive moieties. The photochemical isomerization and subsequent thermal helix inversion steps are confirmed by H-1 NMR and UV-vis absorption spectroscopies. In addition, the tetra-acid functioned motor can be successfully grafted onto amine-coated quartz and it is shown that the light responsive rotary motion on surfaces is preserved

This work requires careful design, considerable synthetic effort, and proper analysis. The rotary motion of the molecular motor in solution is shown by H-1 NMR and UV-vis absorption spectroscopy techniques. In addition, the method to graft the motor onto an amine-coated quartz is described. This method helps to gain more insight into molecular machines
Attention Allocation Aid for Visual Search
This paper outlines the development and testing of a novel, feedback-enabled
attention allocation aid (AAAD), which uses real-time physiological data to
improve human performance in a realistic sequential visual search task. Indeed,
by optimizing over search duration, the aid improves efficiency, while
preserving decision accuracy, as the operator identifies and classifies targets
within simulated aerial imagery. Specifically, using experimental eye-tracking
data and measurements about target detectability across the human visual field,
we develop functional models of detection accuracy as a function of search
time, number of eye movements, scan path, and image clutter. These models are
then used by the AAAD in conjunction with real time eye position data to make
probabilistic estimations of attained search accuracy and to recommend that the
observer either move on to the next image or continue exploring the present
image. An experimental evaluation in a scenario motivated from human
supervisory control in surveillance missions confirms the benefits of the AAAD.Comment: To be presented at the ACM CHI conference in Denver, Colorado in May

Development and Characterisation of a Gas System and its Associated Slow-Control System for an ATLAS Small-Strip Thin Gap Chamber Testing Facility
A quality assurance and performance qualification laboratory was built at
McGill University for the Canadian-made small-strip Thin Gap Chamber (sTGC)
muon detectors produced for the 2019-2020 ATLAS experiment muon spectrometer
upgrade. The facility uses cosmic rays as a muon source to ionise the quenching
gas mixture of pentane and carbon dioxide flowing through the sTGC detector. A
gas system was developed and characterised for this purpose, with a simple and
efficient gas condenser design utilizing a Peltier thermoelectric cooler (TEC).
The gas system was tested to provide the desired 45 vol% pentane concentration.
For continuous operations, a state-machine system was implemented with alerting
and remote monitoring features to run all cosmic-ray data-acquisition
associated slow-control systems, such as high/low voltage, gas system and
environmental monitoring, in a safe and continuous mode, even in the absence of

Youth-Adult Partnerships in Work with Youth: An Overview
Youth-adult partnerships in child and youth services engage the participants in collaborative, shared decision making, in areas such as governance, program planning and implementation, and advocacy. However, these partnerships often occur in isolation, and fail to engage in potentially useful, larger conversations about theory and research. Therefore, in an effort to provide common grounds for understanding and engaging in such partnerships, we offer an overview of current literature. We discuss definitions and discourses, describe models of youth-adult partnerships, and briefly consider current research on potential benefits for youth, adults, organizations, and communities. We also present challenges and promising practices for adult allies engaged in youth-adult partnerships
The modulation of somatosensory resonance by psychopathic traits and empathy
A large number of neuroimaging studies have shown neural overlaps between first-hand experiences of pain and the perception of pain in others. This shared neural representation of vicarious pain is thought to involve both affective and sensorimotor systems. A number of individual factors are thought to modulate the cerebral response to other's pain. The goal of this study was to investigate the impact of psychopathic traits on the relation between sensorimotor resonance to other's pain and self-reported empathy. Our group has previously shown that a steady-state response to non-painful stimulation is modulated by the observation of other people's bodily pain. This change in somatosensory response was interpreted as a form of somatosensory gating (SG). Here, using the same technique, SG was compared between two groups of 15 young adult males: one scoring very high on a self-reported measure of psychopathic traits [60.8 ± 4.98; Levenson's Self-Report Psychopathy Scale (LSRP)] and one scoring very low (42.7 ± 2.94). The results showed a significantly greater reduction of SG to pain observation for the high psychopathic traits group compared to the low psychopathic traits group. SG to pain observation was positively correlated with affective and interpersonal facet of psychopathy in the whole sample. The high psychopathic traits group also reported lower empathic concern (EC) scores than the low psychopathic traits group. Importantly, primary psychopathy, as assessed by the LSRP, mediated the relation between EC and SG to pain observation. Together, these results suggest that increase somatosensory resonance to other's pain is not exclusively explained by trait empathy and may be linked to other personality dimensions, such as psychopathic traits
Interaction between vortices in models with two order parameters
The interaction energy and force between widely separated strings is analyzed
in a field theory having applications to superconducting cosmic strings, the
SO(5) model of high-temperature superconductivity, and solitons in nonlinear
optics. The field theory has two order parameters, one of which is broken in
the vacuum (giving rise to strings), the other of which is unbroken in the
vacuum but which could nonetheless be broken in the core of the string. If this
does occur, there is an effect on the energetics of widely separated strings.
This effect is important if the length scale of this second order parameter is

VISIT-TS: A multimedia tool for population studies on tic disorder
Population-based assessment of Tourette syndrome (TS) and other tic disorders produces a paradox. On one hand, ideally diagnosis of tic disorders requires expert observation. In fact, diagnostic criteria for TS explicitly require expert assessment of tics for a definite diagnosis. On the other hand, large-scale population surveys with expert assessment of every subject are impracticable. True, several published studies have successfully used expert assessment to find tic prevalence in a representative population (e.g. all students in a school district). However, extending these studies to larger populations is daunting. We created a multimedia tool to demonstrate tics to a lay audience, discuss their defining and common attributes, and address features that differentiate tics from other movements and vocalizations. A first version was modified to improve clarity and to include a more diverse group in terms of age and ethnicity. The result is a tool intended for epidemiological research. It may also provide additional benefits, such as more representative minority recruitment for other TS studies and increased community awareness of TS
