O princĂpio da adjacĂȘncia e o grau de integração entre verbo e objeto The adjacency principle and the verb-object bonding
Several functionalist studies have argued that the tendency for verb and object to occur close together in the clause -- attested in different languages of the world and named verb-object bonding-- follows a natural (iconic) principle: the adjacency principle. This study is, then, about the adjacency principle and the verb-object bonding, whose conclusions suggest that: (a) there are some important problems with both definition and validation of the adjacency principle; (b) the link between verb and object can be explained in pragmatic-discursive terms in which aspects related to new/old information play an important role
ASPECTOS FUNCIONAIS DA ORDEM DE CONSTITUINTES Functional Aspects of Order of Constituents
The aim of this paper is to provide a functional interpretation for sentence word order of spoken Brazilian Portuguese (BP). According to the methodology adopted, generalisations of syntactic nature result necessarily from generalisations of semantic and pragmatic nature. The data constitute a representative sentence sampling of spoken Portuguese, drawn from interviews recorded by NURC Project. Since the functional approach considers the co-existence of different word order patterns, used in different conditions and for different purposes, this paper postulates that BP is endowed with two patterns, both equally relevant and pragmatically motivated: SVO and VSO order. It is also argued that such pragmatic motivations relate both patterns diachronically to a possible change in progress in BP typological classification that follows from a primitive VSO type to the actually prevailing SVO type

This article shows that the term "functionalism", very often understood as a single or uniform approach in linguistics, has to be understood in its different perspectives. I start by presenting an opposing conception similar to the I-language vs E-language in Chomsky (1986). As in the latter conception , language can be understood as an abstract model of a mind internal mechanism responsible for language production and perception or, as in the former one, it can be the description of the external use of language. Also like with formalists , there are functionalists who look for cross-linguistic variation (and universals of language use) and functionalists who look for language internal variation. It is also shown that functionalists can differ in the extent to which social variables are considered in the explanation of linguistic form
