    Assessing the impact of local taxation on property prices: a spatial matching contribution

    This article provides empirical evidence on the impact of local taxation on property prices, controlling for the local public spending, using data on property taxation and real estate transactions, over the period 1994–2004. Our empirical methodology pairs transactions in the same spatial environments. Spatial differencing and Instrumental Variables (IV) methodology allow us to compare sales across municipality boundaries and to control for the potential endogeneity of local taxation and public spending. Our results suggest that the local Property Tax (PT) rate has no impact on property prices, while the amount of taxes paid appears to have a negative effect on property price.FISCAL CAPITALIZATION;LOCAL TAXATION;PROPERTY PRICES;BORDERS

    The contribution of the supplementary motor area to explicit and implicit timing: A high-definition transcranial Random Noise Stimulation (HD-tRNS) study

    It is becoming increasingly accepted that timing tasks, and underlying temporal processes, can be partitioned on the basis of whether they require an explicit or implicit temporal judgement. Most neuroimaging studies of timing associated explicit timing tasks with activation of the supplementary motor area (SMA). However, transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) studies perturbing SMA functioning across explicit timing tasks have generally reported null effects, thus failing to causally link SMA to explicit timing. The present study probed the involvement of SMA in both explicit and implicit timing tasks within a single experiment and using HighDefinition transcranial Random Noise Stimulation (HD-tRNS), a previously less used technique in studies of the SMA. Participants performed two tasks that comprised the same stimulus presentation but differed in the received task instructions, which might or might not require explicit temporal judgments. Results showed a significant HD-tRNS-induced shift of perceived durations (i.e., overestimation) in the explicit timing task, whereas there was no modulation of implicit timing by HD-tRNS. Overall, these results provide initial noninvasive brain stimulation evidence on the contribution of the SMA to explicit and implicit timing tasks

    Integrating X-ray computed tomography with chemical imaging to quantify mineral re-crystallization from granulite to eclogite metamorphism in the Western Italian Alps (Sesia-Lanzo Zone)

    Metamorphic transformations and fabric evolution are the consequence of thermo-dynamic processes, lasting from thousands to millions of years. Relative mineral percentages, their grain size distribution, grain orientation, and grain boundary geometries are first-order parameters for dynamic modeling of metamorphic processes. To quantify these parameters, we propose a multidisciplinary approach integrating X-ray computed microtomography (\u3bc-CT) with X-ray chemical mapping obtained from an Electron MicroProbe Analyzer (EMPA). We used a metapelitic granulite sample collected from the Alpine HP-LT metamorphic rocks of the Mt. Mucrone (Eclogitic Micaschists Complex, Sesia-Lanzo Zone, Western Alps, Italy). The heterogeneous Alpine deformation and metamorphism allowed the preservation of pre-alpine structural and mineralogical features developed under granulite-facies conditions. The inferred granulitic mineral association is Grt + Bt + Sil + Pl + Qtz \ub1 Ilm \ub1 Kfs \ub1 Wm. The subsequent pervasive static eclogite-facies re-equilibration occurred during the alpine evolution. The inferred alpine mineral association is Wm + Omp \ub1 Ky + Qtz + Grt though local differences may occur, strongly controlled by chemistry of microdomains. X-ray \u3bc-CT data extracted from centimeter-sized samples have been analyzed to quantify the volumetric percentage and shape preferred orientation (SPO) for each mineral phase. By combining tomographic phase separation with chemical variation and microstructures (i.e., different grain-size classes for the same phase and morphology of different pre-alpine microdomains) the pre-alpine mineralogical phases from the alpine overprint have been distinguished and quantified. Moreover, the sample preserves 100% of the pre-alpine granulite fabric, which surprisingly corresponds to less than 22% of the corresponding pre-alpine metamorphic assemblages, while the alpine eclogitic static assemblage corresponds to 78% though no new fabric is developed. This contribution demonstrates that the combined use of EMPA X-ray chemical mapping with the X-ray \u3bc-CT shape analysis permits a dynamic approach to constrain the chemistry of the mineral phases linked to the development of metamorphic-related static and dynamic fabrics

    lmeEEG: Mass linear mixed-effects modeling of EEG data with crossed random effects

    Background: Mixed-effects models are the current standard for the analysis of behavioral studies in psycholinguistics and related fields, given their ability to simultaneously model crossed random effects for subjects and items. However, they are hardly applied in neuroimaging and psychophysiology, where the use of mass univariate analyses in combination with permutation testing would be too computationally demanding to be practicable with mixed models. New method: Here, we propose and validate an analytical strategy that enables the use of linear mixed models (LMM) with crossed random intercepts in mass univariate analyses of EEG data (lmeEEG). It avoids the unfeasible computational costs that would arise from massive permutation testing with LMM using a simple solution: removing random-effects contributions from EEG data and performing mass univariate linear analysis and permutations on the obtained marginal EEG. Results: lmeEEG showed excellent performance properties in terms of power and false positive rate. Comparison with existing methods: lmeEEG overcomes the computational costs of standard available approaches (our method was indeed more than 300 times faster). Conclusions: lmeEEG allows researchers to use mixed models with EEG mass univariate analyses. Thanks to the possibility offered by the method described here, we anticipate that LMM will become increasingly important in neuroscience. Data and codes are available at osf.io/kw87a.     Chronic intestinal pseudo-obstruction (CIPO) is a severe form of gastrointestinal dysmotility (often due to derangement of the innervation and/or smooth muscle and/or interstitial cells of Cajal) with recurrent episodes of intestinal sub-occlusion. We describe a clinical setting and radiological features of CIPO in an 11-year-old girl with periodic relapses. Our attention was focused firstly on surgical causes, leading to a delay in the diagnosis; thus, is important detecting equivocal symptoms and considering the possible correlation to the CIPO for an early diagnosis and related prevention of acute episodes improving prognosis and quality of life of pediatric patients

This close examination was made considering two different researches: the first by regarding the evaluation of the post implant period, and the second concerning the study of drop out causes. It was possible to find out problems and psychosocial changes caused by the implant, but also to specify critical points, useful to build necessary protocols, to support diabetological valuations and to suggest psychoeducational interventions

    Data-driven approach for highlighting priority areas for protection in marine areas beyond national jurisdiction

    One of the aims of the United Nations (UN) negotiations on the conservation and sustainable use of marine biodiversity in areas beyond national jurisdiction (ABNJ) is to develop a legal process for the establishment of area-based management tools, including marine protected areas, in ABNJ. Here we use a conservation planning algorithm to integrate 55 global data layers on ABNJ species diversity, habitat heterogeneity, benthic features, productivity, and fishing as a means for highlighting priority regions in ABNJ to be considered for spatial protection. We also include information on forecasted species distributions under climate change. We found that parameterizing the planning algorithm to protect at least 30% of these key ABNJ conservation features, while avoiding areas of high fishing effort, yielded a solution that highlights 52,545,634 km2 (23.7%) of ABNJ as high priority regions for protection. Instructing the planning model to avoid ABNJ areas with high fishing effort resulted in relatively minor shifts in the planning solution, when compared to a separate model that did not consider fishing effort. Integrating information on climate change had a similarly minor influence on the planning solution, suggesting that climate-informed ABNJ protected areas may be able to protect biodiversity now and in the future. This globally standardized, data-driven process for identifying priority ABNJ regions for protection serves as a valuable complement to other expert-driven processes underway to highlight ecologically or biologically significant ABNJ regions. Both the outputs and methods exhibited in this analysis can additively inform UN decision-making concerning establishment of ABNJ protected areas
