Probing the correlations in composite signals
The technique of degree of randomness is used to model the correlations in
sequences containing various subsignals and noise. Kolmogorov stochasticity
parameter enables to quantify the randomness in number sequences and hence
appears as an efficient tool to distinguish the signals. Numerical experiments
for a broad class of composite signals of regular and random properties enable
to obtain the qualitative and quantitative criteria for the behavior of the
descriptor depending on the input parameters typical to astrophysical signals.Comment: Eur.Phys.J. to appear, 6 pages, 6 figure
A Review of One-Way and Two-Way Experiments to Test the Isotropy of the Speed of Light
As we approach the 125th anniversary of the Michelson-Morley experiment in
2012, we review experiments that test the isotropy of the speed of light.
Previous measurements are categorized into one-way (single-trip) and two-way
(round-trip averaged or over closed paths) approaches and the level of
experimental verification that these experiments provide is discussed. The
isotropy of the speed of light is one of the postulates of the Special Theory
of Relativity (STR) and, consequently, this phenomenon has been subject to
considerable experimental scrutiny. Here, we tabulate significant experiments
performed since 1881 and attempt to indicate a direction for future
investigation.Comment: Updated Fig. 7 and references; Revised sections 3.2 and 4. Accepted

Healing the wounds of apartheid: evaluating 'developmental local government' in South Africa's cities
Complications arising from the non-compact nature of the phase space of N-body systems prevent any asymptotic characterization of chaotic behaviour (since no equilibrium final states can exist). This leads us to revisit some of the old results concerning geodesic stability on Lagrangian manifolds. These cannot be applied directly but may be useful when properly reinterpreted. A method for doing that is described along with some tests of its validity and possible future applications
