Spectral and polarization effects in deterministically nonperiodic multilayers containing optically anisotropic and gyrotropic materials

Influence of material anisotropy and gyrotropy on optical properties of fractal multilayer nanostructures is theoretically investigated. Gyrotropy is found to uniformly rotate the output polarization for bi-isotropic multilayers of arbitrary geometrical structure without any changes in transmission spectra. When introduced in a polarization splitter based on a birefringent fractal multilayer, isotropic gyrotropy is found to resonantly alter output polarizations without shifting of transmission peak frequencies. The design of frequency-selective absorptionless polarizers for polarization-sensitive integrated optics is outlined

Optimal purification of thermal graph states

    Get PDF
In this paper, a purification protocol is presented and its performance is proven to be optimal when applied to a particular subset of graph states that are subject to local Z-noise. Such mixed states can be produced by bringing a system into thermal equilibrium, when it is described by a Hamiltonian which has a particular graph state as its unique ground state. From this protocol, we derive the exact value of the critical temperature above which purification is impossible, as well as the related optimal purification rates. A possible simulation of graph Hamiltonians is proposed, which requires only bipartite interactions and local magnetic fields, enabling the tuning of the system temperature.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures v2: published versio

Discordant K-Ar and Young Exposure Dates for the Windjana sandstone, Kimberley, Gale Crater, Mars

K-Ar and noble gas surface exposure age measurements were carried out on the Windjana sandstone, Kimberley region, Gale Crater, Mars, by using the Sample Analysis at Mars instrument on the Curiosity rover. The sandstone is unusually rich in sanidine, as determined by CheMin X-ray diffraction, contributing to the high K_2O concentration of 3.09 ± 0.20 wt % measured by Alpha-Particle X-ray Spectrometer analysis. A sandstone aliquot heated to ~915°C yielded a K-Ar age of 627 ± 50 Ma. Reheating this aliquot yielded no additional Ar. A second aliquot heated in the same way yielded a much higher K-Ar age of 1710 ± 110 Ma. These data suggest incomplete Ar extraction from a rock with a K-Ar age older than 1710 Ma. Incomplete extraction at ~900°C is not surprising for a rock with a large fraction of K carried by Ar-retentive K-feldspar. Likely, variability in the exact temperature achieved by the sample from run to run, uncertainties in sample mass estimation, and possible mineral fractionation during transport and storage prior to analysis may contribute to these discrepant data. Cosmic ray exposure ages from ^3He and ^(21)Ne in the two aliquots are minimum values given the possibility of incomplete extraction. However, the general similarity between the ^3He (57 ± 49 and 18 ± 32 Ma, mean 30 Ma) and ^(21)Ne (2 ± 32 and 83 ± 24 Ma, mean 54 Ma) exposure ages provides no evidence for underextraction. The implied erosion rate at the Kimberley location is similar to that reported at the nearby Yellowknife Bay outcrop

[Sensory quality of meat from lambs Morada Nova with or without supplementation, slaughtered in different ages]. Abstract: bjective of characterizing the meat from lambs Morada Nova slaughtered in different ages and submitted or no supplementation. We used 32 uncastrated males, lambs slaughtered at 60, 78, 106 and 134 days, with a group of 8 lambs in each slaughter, a factorial 4 x 2. We evaluated the parameters of hardness, juiciness, taste, colour, aroma and global acceptance, for both used a trained panel with 13 people. No supplementation modified sensory characteristics, while the age at slaughter does not change hardness, juiciness and global acceptance. The flavor is intensified with increasing age of slaughter and the color decreases with increasing age, but was only really different to 60 and 134 days, others are equal. The aroma to 60 days is less intense than the rest
