Characterization of the noble gases and CRE age of the D'Orbigny angrite
Introduction: The D’Orbigny angrite, a 16.55 kg stone, was found 1979 in Argentina [1]. Mineralogy and chemistry of this meteorite were characterized in detail [2-6]. A Pb-U-Th age of 4.559 Ga was obtained for pyroxenes by Jagoutz et al. [7]. Here we report results on the noble gas isotopic composition and, in particular, on the cosmic-ray exposure (CRE) age of D’Orbigny
Heterotrophy as a tool to overcome the long and costly autotrophic scale-up process for large scale production of microalgae
Industrial scale-up of microalgal cultures is often a protracted step prone to culture collapse and the occurrence of unwanted contaminants. To solve this problem, a two-stage scale-up process was developed - heterotrophically Chlorella vulgaris cells grown in fermenters (1st stage) were used to directly inoculate an outdoor industrial autotrophic microalgal production unit (2nd stage). A preliminary pilot-scale trial revealed that C. vulgaris cells grown heterotrophically adapted readily to outdoor autotrophic growth conditions (1-m3 photobioreactors) without any measurable difference as compared to conventional autotrophic inocula. Biomass concentration of 174.5 g L-1, the highest value ever reported for this microalga, was achieved in a 5-L fermenter during scale-up using the heterotrophic route. Inocula grown in 0.2- and 5-m3 industrial fermenters with mean productivity of 27.54 ± 5.07 and 31.86 ± 2.87 g L-1 d-1, respectively, were later used to seed several outdoor 100-m3 tubular photobioreactors. Overall, all photobioreactor cultures seeded from the heterotrophic route reached standard protein and chlorophyll contents of 52.18 ± 1.30% of DW and 23.98 ± 1.57 mg g-1 DW, respectively. In addition to providing reproducible, high-quality inocula, this two-stage approach led to a 5-fold and 12-fold decrease in scale-up time and occupancy area used for industrial scale-up, respectively.Agência financiadora

Oscillatory Instabilities in the Electrooxidation of Borohydride on Platinum
The borohydride ion has been pointed as a promising alternative fuel. Most of the investigation on its electrochemistry is devoted to the electrocatalytic aspects of its electrooxidation on platinum and gold surfaces. Besides the known kinetic limitations and intricate mechanism, our Group has recently found the occurrence of two regions of bi-stability and autocatalysis in the electrode potential during the open circuit interaction of borohydride and oxidized platinum surfaces. Following this previous contribution, the occurrence of more complicated phenomena is here presented: namely the presence of electrochemical oscillations during the electrooxidation of borohydride on platinum in alkaline media. Current oscillations were found to be associated to two distinct instability windows and characterized in the resistance-potential parameter plane. The dynamic features of such oscillations suggest the existence of distinct mechanisms according to the potential region. Previously published results obtained under non-oscillatory regime were used to give some hints on the surface chemistry behind the observed dynamics
The Cauchy-Schlomilch transformation
The Cauchy-Schl\"omilch transformation states that for a function and , the integral of and over the

many non-elementary definite integrals, most of which cannot be obtained by
symbolic packages. Applications to probability distributions is also given
A note on the likelihood and moments of the skew-normal distribution
In this paper an alternative approach to the one in Henze (1986) is proposed for deriving the odd moments of the skew-normal distribution considered in Azzalini (1985). The approach is based on a Pascal type triangle, which seems to greatly simplify moments computation. Moreover, it is shown
that the likelihood equation for estimating the asymmetry parameter in such model is generated as orthogonal functions to the sample vector. As a consequence, conditions for a unique solution of the likelihood equation are established, which seem to hold in more general setting.Peer Reviewe
Deep Multi-instance Networks with Sparse Label Assignment for Whole Mammogram Classification
Mammogram classification is directly related to computer-aided diagnosis of
breast cancer. Traditional methods rely on regions of interest (ROIs) which
require great efforts to annotate. Inspired by the success of using deep
convolutional features for natural image analysis and multi-instance learning
(MIL) for labeling a set of instances/patches, we propose end-to-end trained
deep multi-instance networks for mass classification based on whole mammogram
without the aforementioned ROIs. We explore three different schemes to
construct deep multi-instance networks for whole mammogram classification.
Experimental results on the INbreast dataset demonstrate the robustness of
proposed networks compared to previous work using segmentation and detection
annotations.Comment: MICCAI 2017 Camera Read
The effect of the alkali metal cation on the electrocatalytic oxidation of formate on platinum
Non-covalent interactions between hydrated alkali metal cations and adsorbed oxygenated species on platinum might considerably inhibit some electrocatalytic reactions. We report in this communication the effect exerted by electrolyte alkali metal cations on the electro-oxidation of formate ions on platinum. The system was investigated by means of cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry in the presence of an electrolyte containing Li+, Na+, or K+. As already observed for other systems, the general activity towards the electro-oxidation of formate ions was found to increase in the sequence Li+ + +. In addition, we observed that the inhibition caused by smaller cations has a peculiar potential dependence because of the multi-peaked current profile of the electro-oxidation of formate on platinum. In this respect, we have also identified a new effect caused by cation inhibition at intermediate potentials, namely a peak splitting towards the use of smaller cations. Results are discussed in connection with mechanistic aspects of this model system
