    WEB Open Drone Map (WebODM) a Software Open Source to Photogrammetry Process

    In the photogrammetric process of the 3D reconstruction of an object or a building, multi-image orientation is one of the most important tasks that often include simultaneous camera calibration. The accuracy of image orientation and camera calibration significantly affects the quality and accuracy of all subsequent photogrammetric processes, such as determining the spatial coordinates of individual points or 3D modeling. In the context of artificial vision, the full-field analysis procedure is used, which leads to the so-called Structure from Motion (SfM), which includes the simultaneous determination of the camera's internal and external orientation parameters and the 3D model. The procedures were designed and developed by means of a photogrammetric system, but the greatest development and innovation of these procedures originated from the computer vision from the late 90s, together with the SfM method. The reconstructions on this method have been useful for visualization purposes and not for photogrammetry and mapping. Thanks to advances in computer technology and computer performance, a large number of images can be automatically oriented in a coordinate system arbitrarily defined by different algorithms, often available in open source software (VisualSFM, Bundler, PMVS2, CMVS, etc. .) or in the form of Web services (Microsoft Photosynth, Autodesk 123D Catch, My3DScanner, etc.). However, it is important to obtain an assessment of the accuracy and reliability of these automated procedures. This paper presents the results obtained from different UAV survey processed with open source software using the Structure from Motion approach WEB OpenDroneMap (WebODM). For the UAV survey we used the Spark DJI has a CMOS sensor of 1 / 2.3” and 12 Mpixel (dimension of the pixel 1.5 micron), FOV 81.9° and focal of 25 mm. Photogrammetric surveys have also been processed with the Metashape commercial software by Agisoft. The results were used as a reference to validate the point clouds coming from WebODM. The validation was done using the Cloud Compare open source software

    Terrestrial laser scanner for monitoring the deformations and the damages of buildings

    The paper presents the use of the terrestrial laser scanner for the study and the assessment of damaged buildings. The terrestrial laser scanner provides the ability to detect the geometric 3D model of a building without any physical contact with the structure. Knowledge of the 3D model will give the opportunity to study the deformation and quantify the damages. Three case studies are presented relating to damaged and/or unsafe buildings: Sivillier Castle (Villasor - Sardinia- Italy), the Bell Tower of Mores (Sardinia-Italy) and industrial building (Cagliari - Italy). The first two cases concern buildings of historical and architectural importance that present a state of compromised conservation; the last, an industrial building compromised by fire. In all cases, a laser scanner survey was carried out that not only provided valuable information but also highlighted structural metric deformation and degradation

    Albumin nanoparticles for glutathione-responsive release of cisplatin: new opportunities for medulloblastoma treatment

    Redox-responsive nanoparticles were synthesized by desolvation of bovine serum albumin followed by disulfide-bond crosslinking with N, Nʹ-Bis (acryloyl) cystamine. Dynamic light scattering and transmission electron microscopy studies revealed spherical nanoparticles (mean diameter: 83 nm, polydispersity index: 0.3) that were glutathione-responsive. Confocal microscopy revealed rapid, efficient internalization of the nanoparticles by Daoy medulloblastoma cells and healthy controls (HaCaT keratinocytes). Cisplatin-loaded nanoparticles with drug:carrier ratios of 5%, 10%, and 20% were tested in both cell lines. The formulation with the highest drug:carrier ratio reduced Daoy and HaCaT cell viability with IC50 values of 6.19 and 11.17 μg mL-1, respectively. The differential cytotoxicity reflects the cancer cells’ higher glutathione content, which triggers more extensive disruption of the disulfide bond-mediated intra-particle cross-links, decreasing particle stability and increasing their cisplatin release. These findings support continuing efforts to improve the safety and efficacy of antineoplastic drug therapy for pediatric brain tumors using selective nanoparticlebased drug delivery systems

    Circulating MicroRNAs in Elderly Type 2 Diabetic Patients

    The circulating microRNAs (miRNAs) associated with type 2 diabetes (T2D) in elderly patients are still being defined. To identify novel miRNA biomarker candidates for monitoring responses to sitagliptin in such patients, we prospectively studied 40 T2D patients (age > 65) with HbA1c levels of 7.5–9.0% on metformin. After collection of baseline blood samples (t0), the dipeptidyl peptidase-IV (DPP-IV) inhibitor (DPP-IVi) sitagliptin was added to the metformin regimen, and patients were followed for 15 months. Patients with HbA1c0.5% after 3 and 15 months of therapy were classified as “responders” (group R, n = 34); all others were classified as “nonresponders” (group NR, n = 6). Circulating miRNA profiling was performed on plasma collected in each group before and after 15 months of therapy (t0 and t15). Intra- and intergroup comparison of miRNA profiles pinpointed three miRNAs that correlated with responses to sitagliptin: miR-378, which is a candidate biomarker of resistance to this DPP-IVi, and miR-126-3p and miR-223, which are associated with positive responses to the drug. The translational implications are as immediate as evident, with the possibility to develop noninvasive diagnostic tools to predict drug response and development of chronic complications

    Salivary Microbiota Composition in Patients with Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma: A Systematic Review

    This review aimed to analyse the current knowledge regarding the composition of salivary microbiota of patients with oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). The protocol for this study was designed following the PRISMA guidelines. Observational studies, in human subjects with histological diagnosis of OSCC, concerning the analysis of salivary microbiota, were selected. Eleven papers were included. The salivary microbiomes of 1335 patients were analysed. Periodontal pathogens were the most frequent bacteria detected in patients with OSCC. We have found that although there are evident alterations in the composition of the salivary microbiota in OSCC patients, due to the great heterogeneity of the studies, it is still a challenge to identify a specific microbiota pattern. If the associations between alterations in the salivary microbiome and OSCC are confirmed, microbiome analysis could represent a useful tool for the screening and follow‐up of patients affected by OSCC

    Evolution of satellite DNA sequences in two tribes of Bovidae: a cautionary tale

    Two clones, Bt1 from Bos taurus and Om1 from Ovis orientalis musimon, were used as probes for hybridization on genomic DNA and on metaphase chromosomes in members of Bovini and Caprini tribes. Bt1 and Om1 are sequences respectively belonging to the 1.715 and 1.714 DNA satellite I families. Southern blots and fluorescence in situ hybridization experiments showed completely coherent results: the Bovini probe Bt1 hybridized only to members of the Bovini tribe and not to members of Caprini. Likewise, the Caprini probe Om1 hybridized only to members of the Caprini tribe and not to members of Bovini. Hybridization signals were detected in the heterochromatic regions of every acrocentric autosome, except for two pairs of autosomes from Capra hircus that did not show hybridization to probe Om1. No signal was detected on X and Y chromosomes or on bi-armed autosomes. Remarkably, probe Om1 showed almost 100% homology with a bacterial sequence reported in Helicobacter pylor

    Terrestrial Laser Scanner and Close Range Photogrammetry point clouds accuracy assessment for the structure deformations monitoring

    In this paper we show the results of several tests carried out using methods and instrumentation typical of an architectural survey, along with a set of metrological instrumentation, on a Reinforced Concrete (RC) beam subjected to increasing loads. The goal was to assess the accuracy in the displacements estimated by a medium quality terrestrial laser scanner (TLS) Focus 3d from Faro Technologies, and the low-cost digital camera Canon PowerShot S110 used in a Close Range Photogrammetry (CRP) survey. The software used for scan-data and point clouds processing was Reconstructor JRC Software v. 3.1.0, maintained by Gexcel Ltd, while the images processing was performed with the software Photoscan from Agisoft, which implements Structure from Motion (SfM) approach. Two processing strategies were used in the point clouds comparison: mesh2mesh and modelling the beam behavior fitting the contours of the beam with second order polynomials. Comparisons between the TLS and CRP techniques and the metrological equipment used in parallel highlighted the limits and potentialities of the two geomatic techniques used. It has been shown that modeling the behavior of the beam leads to significantly better results than using the mesh2mesh comparison. For the CRP the increase in accuracy was in the order of 40%, while for the TLS of 50%

    Consequences of simulated microgravity in neural stem cells: biological effects and metabolic response.

    Objective: Microgravity was often shown to cause cell damage and impair cell cycle in a variety of biological systems. Since the effects on the neural system were poorly investigated, we aimed to gain insight into how biological processes such as cell cycle, cell damage, stemness features and metabolic status are involved in neural stem cells (NSC) when they experience simulated microgravity. We also wished to investigate whether these modulations were transient or permanent once cells were returned to normal gravity. Methods: NSC were isolated from mouse cerebella and cultured in the Rotary Cell Culture System (RCCS) to model microgravity. We analyzed cell cycle, stress and apoptotic response. We also performed a 1H NMR-based metabolomic analysis and evaluation of stemness features of NSC in simulated microgravity and once in the returned to normogravity cell culture. Results: Biological processes and metabolic status were modulated by simulated microgravity. Cells were arrested in S-phase together with enhanced apoptosis. Metabolic changes occurred in NSC after simulated microgravity. Interestingly, these modulations were transient. Indeed, stemness features and metabolic footprint returned to basal levels after few days of culture in normal conditions. Moreover NSC clonogenic ability was not impaired. Conclusions: Our data suggest that simulated microgravity impacts on NSC biological processes, including cell cycle and apoptosis. However, NSC does not suffer from permanent damage
