Electromagnetic wave diffraction by periodic planar metamaterials with nonlinear constituents
We present a theory which explains how to achieve an enhancement of nonlinear
effects in a thin layer of nonlinear medium by involving a planar periodic
structure specially designed to bear a trapped-mode resonant regime. In
particular, the possibility of a nonlinear thin metamaterial to produce the
bistable response at a relatively low input intensity due to a large quality
factor of the trapped-mode resonance is shown. Also a simple design of an
all-dielectric low-loss silicon-based planar metamaterial which can provide an
extremely sharp resonant reflection and transmission is proposed. The designed
metamaterial is envisioned for aggregating with a pumped active medium to
achieve an enhancement of quantum dots luminescence and to produce an
all-dielectric analog of a 'lasing spaser'.Comment: 18 pages, 13 figure
Theoretical study of the insulating oxides and nitrides: SiO2, GeO2, Al2O3, Si3N4, and Ge3N4
An extensive theoretical study is performed for wide bandgap crystalline
oxides and nitrides, namely, SiO_{2}, GeO_{2}, Al_{2}O_{3}, Si_{3}N_{4}, and
Ge_{3}N_{4}. Their important polymorphs are considered which are for SiO_{2}:
-quartz, - and -cristobalite and stishovite, for
GeO_{2}: -quartz, and rutile, for Al_{2}O_{3}: -phase, for
Si_{3}N_{4} and Ge_{3}N_{4}: - and -phases. This work
constitutes a comprehensive account of both electronic structure and the
elastic properties of these important insulating oxides and nitrides obtained
with high accuracy based on density functional theory within the local density
approximation. Two different norm-conserving \textit{ab initio}
pseudopotentials have been tested which agree in all respects with the only
exception arising for the elastic properties of rutile GeO_{2}. The agreement
with experimental values, when available, are seen to be highly satisfactory.
The uniformity and the well convergence of this approach enables an unbiased
assessment of important physical parameters within each material and among
different insulating oxide and nitrides. The computed static electric
susceptibilities are observed to display a strong correlation with their mass
densities. There is a marked discrepancy between the considered oxides and
nitrides with the latter having sudden increase of density of states away from
the respective band edges. This is expected to give rise to excessive carrier
scattering which can practically preclude bulk impact ionization process in
Si_{3}N_{4} and Ge_{3}N_{4}.Comment: Published version, 10 pages, 8 figure
Extremely long quasiparticle spin lifetimes in superconducting aluminium using MgO tunnel spin injectors
There has been an intense search in recent years for long-lived
spin-polarized carriers for spintronic and quantum-computing devices. Here we
report that spin polarized quasi-particles in superconducting aluminum layers
have surprisingly long spin-lifetimes, nearly a million times longer than in
their normal state. The lifetime is determined from the suppression of the
aluminum's superconductivity resulting from the accumulation of spin polarized
carriers in the aluminum layer using tunnel spin injectors. A Hanle effect,
observed in the presence of small in-plane orthogonal fields, is shown to be
quantitatively consistent with the presence of long-lived spin polarized
quasi-particles. Our experiments show that the superconducting state can be
significantly modified by small electric currents, much smaller than the
critical current, which is potentially useful for devices involving
superconducting qubits
Effects of information, education, and communication campaign on a community-based health insurance scheme in Burkina Faso
Objective : The study analysed the effect of Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) campaign activities on the adoption of a community-based health insurance (CHI) scheme in Nouna, Burkina Faso. It also identified the factors that enhanced or limited the campaign's effectiveness. Design : Complementary data collection approaches were used. A survey was conducted with 250 randomly selected household heads, followed by in-depth interviews with 22 purposively selected community leaders, group discussions with the project management team, and field observations. Bivariate analysis and multivariate logistic regression models were used to assess the association between household exposure to campaign and acquisition of knowledge as well as household exposure to campaign and enrolment. Results : The IEC campaign had a positive effect on households’ knowledge about the CHI and to a lesser extent on household enrolment in the scheme. The effectiveness of the IEC strategy was mainly influenced by: 1 frequent and consistent IEC messages from multiple media channels (mass and interpersonal channels), including the radio, a mobile information van, and CHI team, and 2 community heads’ participation in the CHI scheme promotion. Education was the only significantly influential socio-demographic determinant of knowledge and enrolment among household heads. The relatively low effects of the IEC campaign on CHI enrolment are indicative of other important IEC mediating factors, which should be taken into account in future CHI campaign evaluation. Conclusion : The study concludes that an IEC campaign is crucial to improving the understanding of the CHI scheme concept, which is an enabler to enrolment, and should be integrated into scheme designs and evaluations
One-Step Synthesis of Monodisperse In-Doped ZnO Nanocrystals
A method for the synthesis of high quality indium-doped zinc oxide (In-doped ZnO) nanocrystals was developed using a one-step ester elimination reaction based on alcoholysis of metal carboxylate salts. The resulting nearly monodisperse nanocrystals are well-crystallized with typically crystal structure identical to that of wurtzite type of ZnO. Structural, optical, and elemental analyses on the products indicate the incorporation of indium into the host ZnO lattices. The individual nanocrystals with cubic structures were observed in the 5% In–ZnO reaction, due to the relatively high reactivity of indium precursors. Our study would provide further insights for the growth of doped oxide nanocrystals, and deepen the understanding of doping process in colloidal nanocrystal syntheses
Biofabrication: reappraising the definition of an evolving field
Biofabrication is an evolving research field that has recently received significant attention. In particular, the adoption of Biofabrication concepts within the field of Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine has grown tremendously, and has been accompanied by a growing inconsistency in terminology. This article aims at clarifying the position of Biofabrication as a research field with a special focus on its relation to and application for Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine. Within this context, we propose a refined working definition of Biofabrication, including Bioprinting and Bioassembly as complementary strategies within Biofabrication.1111377Ysciescopu
Inter-diffusion of Plasmonic Metals and Phase Change Materials
This work investigates the problematic diffusion of metal atoms into phase
change chalcogenides, which can destroy resonances in photonic devices.
Interfaces between Ge2Sb2Te5 and metal layers were studied using X-ray
reflectivity (XRR) and reflectometry of metal-Ge2Sb2Te5 layered stacks. The
diffusion of metal atoms influences the crystallisation temperature and optical
properties of phase change materials. When Au, Ag, Al, W structures are
directly deposited on Ge2Sb2Te5 inter-diffusion occurs. Indeed, Au forms AuTe2
layers at the interface. Diffusion barrier layers, such as Si3N4 or stable
diffusionless plasmonic materials, such as TiN, can prevent the interfacial
damage. This work shows that the interfacial diffusion must be considered when
designing phase change material tuned photonic devices, and that TiN is the
most suitable plasmonic material to interface directly with Ge2Sb2Te5.Comment: 23 pages, 8 figures, articl
Transgenic tobacco plants constitutively expressing Arabidopsis NPR1 show enhanced resistance to root-knot nematode, Meloidogyne incognita
In Arabidopsis, non-expressor of pathogenesis related genes-1, NPR1 has been shown to be a positive regulator of the salicylic acid controlled systemic acquired resistance pathway and modulates the cross talk between SA and JA signaling. Transgenic plants expressing AtNPR1 constitutively exhibited resistance against pathogens as well as herbivory. In the present study, tobacco transgenic plants expressing AtNPR1 were studied further for their response to infection by the sedentary endoparasitic root knot nematode, Meloidogyne incognita. Transgenic plants showed enhanced resistance against the root-knot nematode infection. Prominent differences in the shoot and root weights of wild type and transgenic plants were observed post-inoculation with M. incognita. This was associated with a decrease in the number of root galls and egg masses in transgenic plants compared to WT. The transgenic plants also showed constitutive and induced expression of some PR protein genes, when challenged with M. incognita
An Expanded Multi-scale Monte Carlo Simulation Method for Personalized Radiobiological Effect Estimation in Radiotherapy: a feasibility study
A novel and versatile “bottom-up approach is developed to estimate the radiobiological effect of clinic
radiotherapy. The model consists of multi-scale Monte Carlo simulations from organ to cell levels. At cellular level, accumulated damages are computed using a spectrum-based accumulation algorithm and predefined cellular damage database. The damage repair mechanism is modeled by an expanded reaction-rate two-lesion kinetic model, which were calibrated through replicating a radiobiological experiment. Multi-scale modeling is then performed on a lung cancer patient under conventional fractionated irradiation. The cell killing effects of two representative voxels (isocenter and peripheral voxel of the tumor) are computed and compared. At microscopic level, the nucleus dose and damage yields vary among all nucleuses within the voxels. Slightly larger percentage of cDSB yield is observed for the peripheral voxel (55.0%) compared to the isocenter one (52.5%). For isocenter voxel, survival fraction increase monotonically at reduced oxygen environment. Under an extreme anoxic condition (0.001%), survival fraction is calculated to be 80% and the hypoxia reduction factor reaches a maximum value of 2.24. In conclusion, with biological-related variations, the proposed multi-scale approach
is more versatile than the existing approaches for evaluating personalized radiobiological effects in
radiotherapy
