    Psychotic features can be present in both narcolepsy and psychosis, which can result in challenges in diagnosis and management. The prevalence of both conditions is low and the reports in young people are scarce. Our report illustrates the relevance of a thorough differential diagnosis as well as the need to explore treatment avenues based on the evidence available for both narcolepsy and psychosis symptoms to try and maximise the therapeutic impact

    Towards business integration as a service 2.0 (BIaaS 2.0)

    Cloud Computing Business Framework (CCBF) is a framework for designing and implementation of Could Computing solutions. This proposal focuses on how CCBF can help to address linkage in Cloud Computing implementations. This leads to the development of Business Integration as a Service 1.0 (BIaaS 1.0) allowing different services, roles and functionalities to work together in a linkage-oriented framework where the outcome of one service can be input to another, without the need to translate between domains or languages. BIaaS 2.0 aims to allow automation, enhanced security, advanced risk modelling and improved collaboration between processes in BIaaS 1.0. The benefits from adopting BIaaS 1.0 and developing BIaaS 2.0 are illustrated using a case study from the University of Southampton and several collaborators including IBM US. BIaaS 2.0 can work with mainstream technologies such as scientific workflows, and the proposal and demonstration of BIaaS 2.0 will be aimed to certainly benefit industry and academia. © 2011 IEEE

    Narratives of Canadian Identity at the Ultimate Fighting Championship

    The purpose of this dissertation was to examine the use of representations and symbols of Canadian identity within the event coverage produced by the Ultimate Fighting Championship Corporation, in the context of its two key events, Ultimate Fighting Championship, and Fight Night, produced in Canada. To establish the historical context in which the sport developed in Canada, a narrative historiography of the political and legal struggles that led to the legalization and increasing popularity of Mixed Martial Arts, and the UFCC’s version of the sport, in particular. This first major part of the dissertation is contained in Study 1. The second major part of the dissertation consists of two interrelated studies (Studies 2 and 3), both focussing on narratives of Canadian identity produced by the UFCC in its main event and related coverage. Using Stuart Hall concept of encoding/decoding, Study 2 investigated the UFCC’s broadcast and narrative production as the encoding stage of the communication process. Study 3, conversely, investigated the responses and comments produced by the UFC fan base, in response to the UFCC’s coverage. Certain fan blogs and web sites were investigated as the expression of the fan base perspective. These responses were investigated as the decoding stage, in Hall’s conceptualization of the communication process. The findings from studies 2 and 3 show that the strategic use of specific themes of Canadian identity invoked in the context of UFC event coverage, was to a large extent accepted positively by the segment of the fan base investigated here; however, oppositional or negotiated readings of the UFCC’s coverage was significantly evident in the fan blog responses as well

    The sport of mixed martial arts (MMA), found in 1993, has a very tenuous history. Three influencing factors, sport-related violence, the sportization process, and subculture, have interacted directly with events and individuals through the sport’s history, resulting in these three multi-directional sources of influences having the greatest effect on the direction and development of the sport. MMA, initially promoted as a violent spectacle, became the target of political attacks. Such unprecedented levels and presentation of sporting violence had never before been seen. In reaction, the sportization process of MMA began and the subculture of the sport started to develop as a reaction to the political pressure. The top MMA organization, the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), changed ownership in 2001, resulting in the legitimizing of violence, entrance into the global sports system, and increased diversity of the subculture. The interaction between violence, sportization, and subculture transformed MMA from a violent event with limited reach to a modern global spectacle

    Associations Between Decreased Attentional Resources and Hand Function in Young Adults

    Hand function is important for many everyday motor tasks and is commonly assessed using finger tapping tasks and the Grooved Pegboard Test. Age-related declines in attentional processes are well documented; decreased attentional resources, examined by increasing cognitive load with different types of dual task paradigms, may impair hand function. Many everyday activities also require coordination between both hands (i.e., bimanual dexterity). However, few studies have examined the effects of dual task type on unilateral versus bimanual dexterity. Thus, the purpose of this study is to examine the association between attention and manual dexterity in unilateral and bimanual tasks in young adults. Twenty-three healthy, right-handed adults (19-39 years) performed a unilateral tapping task by tapping with the left index finger on a touchscreen as quickly as possible. Participants also performed a bimanual task by completing the Grooved Pegboard Test with the right hand while performing the tapping task with the left hand. Two common types of cognitive dual tasks (visuospatial and non-visuospatial) were performed during the bimanual task to examine the effects of decreased attentional resources and differential effects of dual task type on bimanual dexterity. This study found the average number of taps was significantly lesser during all bimanual conditions compared to the unilateral tapping task (p \u3c .001) and during the bimanual task with non-visuospatial task versus bimanual task with visuospatial task (p \u3c .001). Results demonstrate that non-visuospatial cognitive tasks impair bimanual hand function to a greater degree than visuospatial tasks, indicating that non-visuospatial tasks may be beneficial to include in assessments of hand function

    Let Λ\Lambda be an isolated non-trival transitive set of a C1C^1 generic diffeomorphism f\in\Diff(M). We show that the space of invariant measures supported on Λ\Lambda coincides with the space of accumulation measures of time averages on one orbit. Moreover, the set of points having this property is residual in Λ\Lambda (which implies the set of irregular+^+ points is also residual in Λ\Lambda). As an application, we show that the non-uniform hyperbolicity of irregular+^+ points in Λ\Lambda with totally 0 measure (resp., the non-uniform hyperbolicity of a generic subset in Λ\Lambda) determines the uniform hyperbolicity of Λ\Lambda

    MODELLING STOCK DYNAMICS IN THE SOUTHERN BENGUELA ECOSYSTEM FOR THE PERIOD 1978–2002

    An ecosystem model of the southern Benguela was fitted to available time-series data for the period 1978–2002, to explore how changes in target fish populations in this ecosystem can be attributed to feeding interaction terms and population control patterns, the impact of fishing, and environmental forcing. Fishing patterns were estimated to explain only 2–3&#37 of the variability in the time-series, whereas an estimated productivity forcing pattern applied to phytoplankton explained 4–12&#37 of the variance represented by the sum of squares. Model settings describing prey vulnerability to their predators could explain around 40&#37 of the variability in the time-series. Modelled stock dynamics in the southern Benguela ecosystem more closely represent observed timeseries when wasp-waist control by small pelagic fish is simulated. Overall, model simulations suggest that almost half the variance in the time-series can be explained based on a combination of fishing, vulnerability settings and productivity patterns. Variation in mortalities and prey preferences over time, as well as model fits in relation to available effort series, are discussed. The study advances a model with improved parameterization and credibility to assist with an ecosystem approach to South African fisheries management. Afr. J. mar. Sci. 26: 179–19

    A Cascade Neural Network Architecture investigating Surface Plasmon Polaritons propagation for thin metals in OpenMP

    Surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) confined along metal-dielectric interface have attracted a relevant interest in the area of ultracompact photonic circuits, photovoltaic devices and other applications due to their strong field confinement and enhancement. This paper investigates a novel cascade neural network (NN) architecture to find the dependance of metal thickness on the SPP propagation. Additionally, a novel training procedure for the proposed cascade NN has been developed using an OpenMP-based framework, thus greatly reducing training time. The performed experiments confirm the effectiveness of the proposed NN architecture for the problem at hand
