Covariant boost and structure functions of baryons in Gross-Neveu models
Baryons in the large N limit of two-dimensional Gross-Neveu models are
reconsidered. The time-dependent Dirac-Hartree-Fock approach is used to boost a
baryon to any inertial frame and shown to yield the covariant energy-momentum
relation. Momentum distributions are computed exactly in arbitrary frames and
used to interpolate between the rest frame and the infinite momentum frame,
where they are related to structure functions. Effects from the Dirac sea
depend sensitively on the occupation fraction of the valence level and the bare
fermion mass and do not vanish at infinite momentum. In the case of the kink
baryon, they even lead to divergent quark and antiquark structure functions at

Cholinergic modulation of UpâDown states in the mouse medial entorhinal cortex in vitro
Cholinergic tone is high during wake and rapid eye movement sleep and lower during slow wave sleep (SWS). Nevertheless, the low tone of acetylcholine during SWS modulates sharp wave ripple incidence in the hippocampus and slow wave activity in the neocortex. Linking the hippocampus and neocortex, the medial entorhinal cortex (mEC) regulates the coupling between these structures during SWS, alternating between silent Down states and active Up states, which outlast neocortical ones. Here, we investigated how low physiological concentrations of acetylcholine (ACh; 100â500 nM) modulate Up and Down states in a mEC slice preparation. We find that ACh has a dual effect on mEC activity: it prolongs apparent Up state duration as recorded in individual cells and decreases the total synaptic charge transfer, without affecting the duration of detectable synaptic activity. The overall outcome of ACh application is excitatory and we show that ACh increases Up state incidence via muscarinic receptor activation. The mean firing rate of principal neurons increased in around half of the cells while the other half showed a decrease in firing rate. Using twoâphoton calcium imaging of population activity, we found that populationâwide network events are more frequent and rhythmic during ACh and confirmed that ACh modulates cell participation in these network events, consistent with a role for cholinergic modulation in regulating information flow between the hippocampus and neocortex during SWS
Optimal Computation of Avoided Words
The deviation of the observed frequency of a word from its expected
frequency in a given sequence is used to determine whether or not the word
is avoided. This concept is particularly useful in DNA linguistic analysis. The
value of the standard deviation of , denoted by , effectively
characterises the extent of a word by its edge contrast in the context in which
it occurs. A word of length is a -avoided word in if
, for a given threshold . Notice that such a word
may be completely absent from . Hence computing all such words na\"{\i}vely
can be a very time-consuming procedure, in particular for large . In this
article, we propose an -time and -space algorithm to compute all
-avoided words of length in a given sequence of length over a
fixed-sized alphabet. We also present a time-optimal -time and
-space algorithm to compute all -avoided words (of any
length) in a sequence of length over an alphabet of size .
Furthermore, we provide a tight asymptotic upper bound for the number of
-avoided words and the expected length of the longest one. We make
available an open-source implementation of our algorithm. Experimental results,
using both real and synthetic data, show the efficiency of our implementation
The BioExtract Server: a web-based bioinformatic workflow platform
The BioExtract Server (bioextract.org) is an open, web-based system designed to aid researchers in the analysis of genomic data by providing a platform for the creation of bioinformatic workflows. Scientific workflows are created within the system by recording tasks performed by the user. These tasks may include querying multiple, distributed data sources, saving query results as searchable data extracts, and executing local and web-accessible analytic tools. The series of recorded tasks can then be saved as a reproducible, sharable workflow available for subsequent execution with the original or modified inputs and parameter settings. Integrated data resources include interfaces to the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) nucleotide and protein databases, the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL-Bank) non-redundant nucleotide database, the Universal Protein Resource (UniProt), and the UniProt Reference Clusters (UniRef) database. The system offers access to numerous preinstalled, curated analytic tools and also provides researchers with the option of selecting computational tools from a large list of web services including the European Molecular Biology Open Software Suite (EMBOSS), BioMoby, and the Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG). The system further allows users to integrate local command line tools residing on their own computers through a client-side Java applet
The effects of delayed auditory and visual feedback on speech production
Monitoring the sensory consequences of articulatory movements supports speaking. For example, delaying auditory feedback of a speaker's voice disrupts speech production. Also, there is evidence that this disruption may be decreased by immediate visual feedback, i.e., seeing one's own articulatory movements. It is, however, unknown whether delayed visual feedback affects speech production in fluent speakers. Here, the effects of delayed auditory and visual feedback on speech fluency (i.e., speech rate and errors), vocal control (i.e., intensity and pitch), and speech rhythm were investigated. Participants received delayed (by 200âms) or immediate auditory feedback, while repeating sentences. Moreover, they received either no visual feedback, immediate visual feedback, or delayed visual feedback (by 200, 400, and 600âms). Delayed auditory feedback affected fluency, vocal control, and rhythm. Immediate visual feedback had no effect on any of the speech measures when it was combined with delayed auditory feedback. Delayed visual feedback did, however, affect speech fluency when it was combined with delayed auditory feedback. In sum, the findings show that delayed auditory feedback disrupts fluency, vocal control, and rhythm and that delayed visual feedback can strengthen the disruptive effect of delayed auditory feedback on fluency
Experimental demonstration of quantum correlations over more than 10 km
Energy and time entangled photons at a wavelength of 1310 nm are produced by
parametric downconversion in a KNbO3 crystal and are sent into all-fiber
interferometers using a telecom fiber network. The two interferometers of this
Franson-type test of the Bell-inequality are located 10.9 km apart from one
another. Two-photon fringe visibilities of up to 81.6 % are obtained. These
strong nonlocal correlations support the nonlocal predictions of quantum
mechanics and provide evidence that entanglement between photons can be

Finite strain Landau theory of high pressure phase transformations
The properties of materials near structural phase transitions are often
successfully described in the framework of Landau theory. While the focus is
usually on phase transitions, which are induced by temperature changes
approaching a critical temperature T-c, here we will discuss structural phase
transformations driven by high hydrostatic pressure, as they are of major
importance for understanding processes in the interior of the earth. Since at
very high pressures the deformations of a material are generally very large,
one needs to apply a fully nonlinear description taking physical as well as
geometrical nonlinearities (finite strains) into account. In particular it is
necessary to retune conventional Landau theory to describe such phase
transitions. In Troster et al (2002 Phys. Rev. Lett. 88 55503) we constructed a
Landau-type free energy based on an order parameter part, an order
parameter-(finite) strain coupling and a nonlinear elastic term. This model
provides an excellent and efficient framework for the systematic study of phase
transformations for a wide range of materials up to ultrahigh pressures
Long-distance Bell-type tests using energy-time entangled photons
Long-distance Bell-type experiments are presented. The different experimental
challenges and their solutions in order to maintain the strong quantum
correlations between energy-time entangled photons over more than 10 km are
reported and the results analyzed from the point of view of tests of
fundamental physics as well as from the more applied side of quantum
communication, specially quantum key distribution. Tests using more than one

First-order interference of nonclassical light emitted spontaneously at different times
We study first-order interference in spontaneous parametric down-conversion
generated by two pump pulses that do not overlap in time. The observed
modulation in the angular distribution of the signal detector counting rate can
only be explained in terms of a quantum mechanical description based on
biphoton states. The condition for observing interference in the signal channel

Entangled state quantum cryptography: Eavesdropping on the Ekert protocol
Using polarization-entangled photons from spontaneous parametric
downconversion, we have implemented Ekert's quantum cryptography protocol. The
near-perfect correlations of the photons allow the sharing of a secret key
between two parties. The presence of an eavesdropper is continually checked by
measuring Bell's inequalities. We investigated several possible eavesdropper
strategies, including pseudo-quantum non-demolition measurements. In all cases,
the eavesdropper's presence was readily apparent. We discuss a procedure to
