This PhD thesis is focused on a variety of excitable dynamical systems witch can be described as a system of reaction cells coupled by diffusion -type mass exchange. Such systems may be of chemical or biochemical type. Among reactions investigated in this work belongs the Belousov - Zhabotinsky (BZ) [1, 2] reaction which represents a model chemical system and the Calcium-Induced Calcium Release (CICR) [3] and Inositol-Calcium Cross -Coupling (ICC) [4] which represent model biological systems, particularly models of the dynamics of calcium ions in cytosol. An effect of parameter changes on excitability for all above mentioned model systems is of interest. In particular, the effect of coupling strength on signal propagation in excitable medium when the first reaction cell was perturbed by external periodic pulses were studied in detail by numerical modelling [5]. The model of the BZ reaction kinetics was further modified in this work to include description of perturbation by silver ions and the number of state variables has been reduced. The Oregonator model containing four variables was chosen for this purpose. First, the fifth variable describing the silver ion concentration was included into the model and then this variable together with that corresponding HBrO_2+ concentration were expressed by means of other variables using a quasi - steady - state assumption. Finally, this model was transformed into a dimensionless form [6, 7, 8]. Several subroutines of ODEPACK and CONT software packages (originating in our institute) have been used to solve a system of ordinary differential equations describing the mathematical models. Results of the calculations with the model of the BZ reaction were compared with experiments [9,10,11,12,14] providing qualitative, and in some cases quantitative agreement. A simple phase model could be constructed on the basis of obtained results giving quantitative agreement with the results of simulations of the full model [6,7]. Several subroutines written in FORTRAN are also presented in this work. These subroutines enable on-line visualization of results, the bifurcation points and the changes of stability in computations performed with the software package CONT[16].Available from STL Prague, CZ / NTK - National Technical LibrarySIGLECZCzech Republi
