Narrow scope for resolution-limit-free community detection
Detecting communities in large networks has drawn much attention over the
years. While modularity remains one of the more popular methods of community
detection, the so-called resolution limit remains a significant drawback. To
overcome this issue, it was recently suggested that instead of comparing the
network to a random null model, as is done in modularity, it should be compared
to a constant factor. However, it is unclear what is meant exactly by
"resolution-limit-free", that is, not suffering from the resolution limit.
Furthermore, the question remains what other methods could be classified as
resolution-limit-free. In this paper we suggest a rigorous definition and
derive some basic properties of resolution-limit-free methods. More
importantly, we are able to prove exactly which class of community detection
methods are resolution-limit-free. Furthermore, we analyze which methods are
not resolution-limit-free, suggesting there is only a limited scope for
resolution-limit-free community detection methods. Finally, we provide such a
natural formulation, and show it performs superbly
A non-associative quantum mechanics
A non-associative quantum mechanics is proposed in which the product of three
and more operators can be non-associative one. The multiplication rules of the
octonions define the multiplication rules of the corresponding operators with
quantum corrections. The self-consistency of the operator algebra is proved for
the product of three operators. Some properties of the non-associative quantum
mechanics are considered. It is proposed that some generalization of the
non-associative algebra of quantum operators can be helpful for understanding
of the algebra of field operators with a strong interaction.Comment: one typo in Eq. (23) is correcte
Quasigroups, Asymptotic Symmetries and Conservation Laws in General Relativity
A new quasigroup approach to conservation laws in general relativity is
applied to study asymptotically flat at future null infinity spacetime. The
infinite-parametric Newman-Unti group of asymptotic symmetries is reduced to
the Poincar\'e quasigroup and the Noether charge associated with any element of
the Poincar\'e quasialgebra is defined. The integral conserved quantities of
energy-momentum and angular momentum are linear on generators of Poincar\'e
quasigroup, free of the supertranslation ambiguity, posess the flux and
identically equal to zero in Minkowski spacetime.Comment: RevTeX4, 5 page
Excitation of surface plasmon-polaritons in metal films with double periodic modulation: anomalous optical effects
We perform a thorough theoretical analysis of resonance effects when an
arbitrarily polarized plane monochromatic wave is incident onto a double
periodically modulated metal film sandwiched by two different transparent
media. The proposed theory offers a generalization of the theory that had been
build in our recent papers for the simplest case of one-dimensional structures
to two-dimensional ones. A special emphasis is placed on the films with the
modulation caused by cylindrical inclusions, hence, the results obtained are
applicable to the films used in the experiments. We discuss a spectral
composition of modulated films and highlight the principal role of
``resonance'' and ``coupling'' modulation harmonics. All the originating
multiple resonances are examined in detail. The transformation coefficients
corresponding to different diffraction orders are investigated in the vicinity
of each resonance. We make a comparison between our theory and recent
experiments concerning enhanced light transmittance and show the ways of
increasing the efficiency of these phenomena. In the appendix we demonstrate a
close analogy between ELT effect and peculiarities of a forced motion of two
coupled classical oscillators.Comment: 24 pages, 17 figure
Resonance effects due to the excitation of surface Josephson plasma waves in layered superconductors
We analytically examine the excitation of surface Josephson plasma waves
(SJPWs) in periodically-modulated layered superconductors. We show that the
absorption of the incident electromagnetic wave can be substantially increased,
for certain incident angles, due to the resonance excitation of SJPWs. The
absorption increase is accompanied by the decrease of the specular reflection.
Moreover, we find the physical conditions guaranteeing the total absorption
(and total suppression of the specular reflection). These conditions can be
realized for Bi2212 superconductor films.Comment: 17 pages, 3 figure
Nonlinear interfaces: intrinsically nonparaxial regimes and effects
The behaviour of optical solitons at planar nonlinear boundaries is a problem rich in intrinsically nonparaxial regimes that cannot be fully addressed by theories based on the nonlinear Schrödinger equation. For instance, large propagation angles are typically involved in external refraction at interfaces. Using a recently proposed generalized Snell's law for Helmholtz solitons, we analyse two such effects: nonlinear external refraction and total internal reflection at interfaces where internal and external refraction, respectively, would be found in the absence of nonlinearity. The solutions obtained from the full numerical integration of the nonlinear Helmholtz equation show excellent agreement with the theoretical predictions
The gamma-ray telescope Gamma-1
French and Soviet specialists have designed and built the gamma-ray telescope GAMMA-1 to detect cosmic gamma rays above 50 MeV. The sensitive area of the detector is 1400 sq cm, energy resolution is 30% at 300 MeV, and angular resolution 1.2 deg at 300 MeV (and less than 20' arc when a coded aperture mask is used). Results on calibration of the qualification model and Monte-Carlo calculations are presented
Nonlinear Dynamics of Dipoles in Microtubules: Pseudo-Spin Model
We perform a theoretical study of the dynamics of the electric field
excitations in a microtubule by taking into consideration the realistic
cylindrical geometry, dipole-dipole interactions of the tubulin-based protein
heterodimers, the radial electric field produced by the solvent, and a possible
degeneracy of energy states of individual heterodimers. The consideration is
done in the frames of the classical pseudo-spin model. We derive the system of
nonlinear dynamical ordinary differential equations of motion for interacting
dipoles, and the continuum version of these equations. We obtain the solutions
of these equations in the form of snoidal waves, solitons, kinks, and localized
spikes. Our results will help to a better understanding of the functional
properties of microtubules including the motor protein dynamics and the
information transfer processes. Our considerations are based on classical
dynamics. Some speculations on the role of possible quantum effects are also
made.Comment: 14 pages, 15 figures. The high resolution figure files are available
