    On the structure of non-full-rank perfect codes

    The Krotov combining construction of perfect 1-error-correcting binary codes from 2000 and a theorem of Heden saying that every non-full-rank perfect 1-error-correcting binary code can be constructed by this combining construction is generalized to the qq-ary case. Simply, every non-full-rank perfect code CC is the union of a well-defined family of μ\mu-components KμK_\mu, where μ\mu belongs to an "outer" perfect code CC^*, and these components are at distance three from each other. Components from distinct codes can thus freely be combined to obtain new perfect codes. The Phelps general product construction of perfect binary code from 1984 is generalized to obtain μ\mu-components, and new lower bounds on the number of perfect 1-error-correcting qq-ary codes are presented.Comment: 8 page

    What do teens make of personal informatics? Youth responses to self-tracking practices within a classroom setting

    Personal informatics (PI) technologies allow users to collect data about aspects of their lifestyle like mood or step count. Though teens increasingly encounter and use such technologies, little is known about how they ascribe meaning to their own PI activities. We report a qualitative study of the PI experiences of eighteen teens (aged 14 – 17). Following a learning phase focused on interpreting PI data, participants chose a personal goal that interested them and a PI tool to track it for 4-8 weeks in everyday contexts. Participants proved to be competent, flexible users of PI tools, tracking a range of meaningful life factors, from ‘worries’ to ‘exercise’; they valued learning about ‘natural patterns’ in their lives and were motivated to manage their emotions and evaluate whether they were doing the right thing. Our findings contribute to understanding how young people can engage in appropriation and interpretation of PI data – suggesting opportunities for educational interventions and design

    Quantum Phase Shift in Chern-Simons Modified Gravity

    Using a unified approach of optical-mechanical analogy in a semiclassical formula, we evaluate the effect of Chern-Simons modified gravity on the quantum phase shift of de Broglie waves in neutron interferometry. The phase shift calculated here reveals, in a single equation, a combination of effects coming from Newtonian gravity, inertial forces, Schwarzschild and Chern-Simons modified gravity. However the last two effects, though new, turn out to be too tiny to be observed, and hence only of academic interest at present. The approximations, wherever used, as well as the drawbacks of the non-dynamical approach are clearly indicated.Comment: 16 pages, minor errors corrected. Accepted for publication in Phys. Rev.

    Safety and feasibility of robotic-assisted drainage of symptomatic pancreatic pseudocysts: A case-series analysis (with video)

    The surgical treatment of pancreatic pseudocysts (PPs) in patients who fail nonoperative management has evolved from aggressive open to a minimally invasive approach. The application of robotic surgery in this setting is scarcely reported. The aim of this study is to analyze the safety and feasibility of the robotic approach to pancreatic pseudocyst drainage. A single centre retrospective review of consecutive patients undergoing robotic-assisted pancreatic pseudocyst surgeries in an academic tertiary institution was performed. There were 14 patients studied, of whom 10 underwent cystogastrostomy and 4 Roux-En-Y cystojejunostomy. Eight patients had gallstone pancreatitis and 3 patients alcoholic pancreatitis. The mean size of cyst was 8.9±1cm and 57.1% located at the pancreatic body. The overall operative time of the procedure was 135±34 minutes. There were no open conversions. The overall success rate was 92.8%, while the primary success rate 85.7%. The major morbidity rate was 14.3% and there was no 30-day mortality. The mean post-operative hospital stay was 7±3 days with one recurrence of the pancreatic pseudocyst on follow-up requiring endoscopic drainage without further recurrence. The robotic approach for the drainage of symptomatic pancreatic pseudocyst is safe and feasible and can be considered as a viable modality for operative intervention in well-selected patient

In this paper we discuss requirements for programming language with respect to AGI research. In this article new language will be presented. Unconventional features (e.g. probabilistic programming and partial evaluation) are discussed as important parts of language design and implementation. Besides, we consider possible applications to particular problems related to AGI. Language interpreter for Lisp-like probabilistic mixed paradigm programming language is implemented in Haskell

    Interaction between UN and CdCl2 in molten LiCl-KCl eutectic. I. Experiment at 773 K

    The interaction between UN and CdCl2 in the LiCl-KCl molten eutectic was studied at 773 K. The reaction was controlled by sampling the melt, as well as by analysis of the resulting precipitate. The process was shown to proceed according to several parallel reactions. The summary reaction was determined to have two stages: a fast one and a slow one. The 19–53% UN → UCl3 conversion was obtained for the molar ratio of CdCl2/UN = 1.22–14.9. The rest of UN converts into the precipitate of complex composition (UNCl + U2N3 + U4N7 + UN2). The increase in the CdCl2/UN molar ratio from 1.22 to 14.9 resulted in the decrease in duration of the first “fast” stage of the process from 18 h to 1 h. © 201
