    Transition times in the Landau-Zener model

    This paper presents analytic formulas for various transition times in the Landau-Zener model. Considerable differences are found between the transition times in the diabatic and adiabatic bases, and between the jump time (the time for which the transition probability rises to the region of its asymptotic value) and the relaxation time (the characteristic damping time of the oscillations which appear in the transition probability after the crossing). These transition times have been calculated by using the exact values of the transition probabilities and their derivatives at the crossing point and approximations to the time evolutions of the transition probabilities in the diabatic basis, derived earlier \protect{[}N.     Multi-domain active sound control and noise shielding

    This paper describes an active sound control methodology based on difference potentials. The main feature of this methodology is its ability to automatically preserve “wanted” sound within a domain while canceling “unwanted” noise from outside the domain. This method of preservation of the wanted sounds by active shielding control is demonstrated with various broadband and realistic sound sources such as human voice and music in multiple domains in a one-dimensional enclosure. Unlike many other conventional active control methods, the proposed approach does not require the explicit characterization of the wanted sound to be preserved. The controls are designed based on the measurements of the total field on the boundaries of the shielded domain only, which is allowed to be multiply connected. The method is tested in a variety of experimental cases. The typical attenuation of the unwanted noise is found to be about 20 dB over a large area of the shielded domain and the original wanted sound field is preserved with errors of around 1 dB and below through a broad frequency range up to 1 kHz. © 2011 Acoustical Society of Americ

    Finite temperature Casimir pistons for electromagnetic field with mixed boundary conditions and its classical limit

    In this paper, the finite temperature Casimir force acting on a two-dimensional Casimir piston due to electromagnetic field is computed. It was found that if mixed boundary conditions are assumed on the piston and its opposite wall, then the Casimir force always tends to restore the piston towards the equilibrium position, regardless of the boundary conditions assumed on the walls transverse to the piston. In contrary, if pure boundary conditions are assumed on the piston and the opposite wall, then the Casimir force always tend to pull the piston towards the closer wall and away from the equilibrium position. The nature of the force is not affected by temperature. However, in the high temperature regime, the magnitude of the Casimir force grows linearly with respect to temperature. This shows that the Casimir effect has a classical limit as has been observed in other literatures.Comment: 14 pages, 3 figures, accepted by Journal of Physics

    Experimental realization of strange nonchaotic attractors in a quasiperiodically forced electronic circuit

    We have identified the three prominent routes, namely Heagy-Hammel, fractalization and intermittency routes, and their mechanisms for the birth of strange nonchaotic attractors (SNAs) in a quasiperiodically forced electronic system constructed using a negative conductance series LCR circuit with a diode both numerically and experimentally. The birth of SNAs by these three routes is verified from both experimental and their corresponding numerical data by maximal Lyapunov exponents, and their variance, Poincar\'e maps, Fourier amplitude spectrum, spectral distribution function and finite-time Lyapunov exponents. Although these three routes have been identified numerically in different dynamical systems, the experimental observation of all these mechanisms is reported for the first time to our knowledge and that too in a single second order electronic circuit.Comment: 21 figure

    Relativistic linear stability equations for the nonlinear Dirac equation in Bose-Einstein condensates

    We present relativistic linear stability equations (RLSE) for quasi-relativistic cold atoms in a honeycomb optical lattice. These equations are derived from first principles and provide a method for computing stabilities of arbitrary localized solutions of the nonlinear Dirac equation (NLDE), a relativistic generalization of the nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation. We present a variety of such localized solutions: skyrmions, solitons, vortices, and half-quantum vortices, and study their stabilities via the RLSE. When applied to a uniform background, our calculations reveal an experimentally observable effect in the form of Cherenkov radiation. Remarkably, the Berry phase from the bipartite structure of the honeycomb lattice induces a boson-fermion transmutation in the quasi-particle operator statistics.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figure

    KINEMATICS STUDY OF JUNIOR AMATEUR GOLFERS IN SINGAPORE

    Qualitative tools for golf motion analysis like video and graphical overlay have provided competitive golfers in Singapore feedback on their swing. The analysis of this information tends to be subjective due to a lack of reliable quantifiable kinematics information. The authors applied the methods perlormed by Mc Laughlin and Best [1994], Robinson [1994] and Miura and Nauro [1998] on two professional players and six national age group players. Differences were found in how the two groups of players swing, in particular their setup and translation of their Center of Mass (COM) at Middle of Backswing (MBS) and Ball Impact Frame (BIF). Angle displacement of the shoulder-hip axis was studied and found to be pertinent to the kinetic link analysis. This parameter could serve as an intermediary for quantitative and qualitative analysis

    Role of Exogenous Proline in Ameliorating Salt Stress at Early Stage in Two Rice Cultivars

    The study evaluated the effect of proline on germination and seedling growth of two Malaysian rice cultivars (MR220 and MR232) under salt stress. The exposure of rice seeds to increasing concentration of NaCl (0, 100, 200, 300 and 400 mM) had drastically affected germination (%), root and shoot length (mm), chlorophyll content and protein content. It is evident from the result of inhibition in germination rate, reduction in root and shoot length, chlorophyll content and protein content. However, several studies have shown that exogenous application of proline has ameliorated the negative effect of salt stress by regulating cellular osmotic balance. The present study has demonstrated that rice seeds pretreated with proline (1mM, 5mM and 10mM) and grown at different NaCl concentrations counteracted the adverse effect of salt. Pretreatment of proline at a concentration of 1mM was found to be effective and stimulated cellular activities, whereas 10mM proline was ineffective in improving plant growth under high level of salt (300 and 400mM NaCl)

    The paper describes a vehicle plate recognition system based on computer vision technique. The vehicle image/video was taken from a digital camera and then the vehicle plate automatically identified, segmented and recognized by the system. The feature reduction technique of Principal Components Analysis (PCA) was used in the system. This application was built using Microsoft Visual C++ 6.0®, Microsoft® DirectShow®, Intel® Image Processing Library and Open Source Computer Vision (OpenCV) Library. The application has been implemented and was able to detect vehicle plate position and recognize it using a PC Pentium II/400 MHz. The recognition rate of ±82% was achieved based on recognition of hundreds alphanumeric images (alphanumeric A-Z, 0-9). This sistem is prospective enough to be used for control and security system in parking area
