    The Investigation of Intermediate Stage of Template Etching with Metal Droplets by Wetting Angle Analysis on (001) GaAs Surface

    In this work, we study metal droplets on a semiconductor surface that are the initial stage for both droplet epitaxy and local droplet etching. The distributions of droplet geometrical parameters such as height, radius and volume help to understand the droplet formation that strongly influences subsequent nanohole etching. To investigate the etching and intermixing processes, we offer a new method of wetting angle analysis. The aspect ratio that is defined as the ratio of the height to radius was used as an estimation of wetting angle which depends on the droplet material. The investigation of the wetting angle and the estimation of indium content revealed significant materials intermixing during the deposition time. AFM measurements reveal the presence of two droplet groups that is in agreement with nanohole investigations. To explain this observation, we consider arsenic evaporation and consequent change in the initial substrate. On the basis of our analysis, we suggest the model of droplet evolution and the formation of two droplet groups

    Sport fans' roles in value co-creation

    Research question The sports industry has witnessed sustained growth. The cultural, symbolic and stakeholder-embedded nature of sport provides a dynamic setting for developing service research. In this context, an evolution in the logic of value creation can be observed; fans are no longer passive receivers of value but, instead, can be active value co-creators. The sport fan exhibits distinctive characteristics and an ability and willingness to integrate resources and co-produce value propositions, which necessitates an understanding of fan value co-creation. We answer one key research question: what is the role of fans in value co-creation in sports? We do so by conceptually exploring the processes through which sport fans co-create and provide value propositions. Research methods We use case exemplars to provide a base for the theoretical consideration of the role of sport fans in value co-creation. We verify and consolidate the service-dominant logic (SDL) in the sport context. However, due to the high level of abstraction of the SDL as a general theory, we utilize consumer culture theory (CCT) as a middle range theory (MRT) to bridge the gap between contextual descriptions of the role of fans and the SDL. Results and findings Fans evaluate, redefine and reposition value propositions in different sport settings. The three roles of assimilators, adaptors and authenticators in value co-creation are identified through five case exemplars. We extend the theoretical understanding of the processes through which sport fans co-create value. Implications Knowledge of the distinctive characteristics of sport fans and their roles in value co-creation will assist managers in developing effective marketing propositions. Our theoretical contribution will generate new lines of research in the field

    Strontium isotopic geochemistry of Pan-African/Brasiliano rocks, Chapada copper deposit, Goiás, Brazil

    Das Trägergestein der Chapada Kupferlagerstätte in Goiás ist in metamorpher Hoch-Amphibolitfazies ausgebildet. Gesamtgesteins- und individuelle Mineral Rb-Sr-Isochronen mit einem 87 Sr/ 86 Sr-Initialwert (I) von 0,70414±0.00005 ergeben für die Kristallisation der Vulkanite und Magmatite, die die Metamorphose vordatieren, ein Alter von 561±9 Mio Jahre. Die Datierung der Metamorphose während der panafrikanisch/brasilianischen Orogenese (700 bis 450 Mio Jahre) ergibt 532±1 Mio Jahre. Das Mineral-Isochronenalter eines Dioritkörpers porphyrischen Gefüges, der in die Schiefer intrudierte, beträgt 534±16 Mio Jahre (I=0,70415 ±0,00004). Das Ergebnis niedriger Initial-Werte dieser Isochronen ergibt für die Schiefer bei Chapada ein Ausgangs-Material im Bereich des oberen Mantels oder der tieferen Kruste; diese Ausgangswerte sind charakteristisch für magmatische Tätigkeit in Verbindung mit Inselbögen. Das unterkambrische Alter des Trägergesteins bei Chapada steht im Widerspruch zu dem bisher angenommenen mittelproterozoischen Alter und ist ein Hinweis auf eine mögliche Phase intensiverer pan-afrikanisch/brasilianischer magmatischer Aktivität in Zentral-Brasilien als ursprünglich angenommen wurde. Whole rock and mineral Rb-Sr isochrons from the upper amphibolite grade metamorphic host rocks of the Chapada copper deposit in Goiás, Brazil, yield an age of 561±9 Ma, with a 87 Sr/ 86 Sr initial (I) of 0.70414±0.00005, for the crystallization of pre-metamorphic volcanic and igneous rocks and 532 ±1 Ma for their metamorphism during the Pan-African/Brasiliano orogeny (700-450 Ma). A porphyritic diorite stock which intruded the host schists yields a mineral isochron age of 534±16 Ma (I=0.70415±0.00004). The low I values determined from these isochrons suggest that the host schists at Chapada were derived from upper mantle or lower crust material and are characteristic of magmatic products associated with island arcs. The Early Cambrian age of the host rocks at Chapada contradicts the previously assigned mid-Proterozoic age and suggests that Pan-African/Brasiliano magmatic activity may have been more extensive in central Brazil than previously thought. Les roches qui contiennent le gisement de cuivre de Chapada (Goias, Brésil) sont des schistes cristallins appartenent au facies dupérieur des amphibolites. Dans des volcanites et des roches orthomagmatiques appartenant à cet ensemble, des isochrones Rb-Sr sur roches totales et sur minéraux donnent un âge de 561±9 Ma avec un rapport initial de 0,70414±0,00005 pour la cristallisation pré-métamorphique et un âge de 532±1 Ma pour le métamorphisme, lié à l'orogenèse pan-africaine / brésilienne. Un pluton de diorite porphyrique, qui intrude les schistes cristallins donne, par isochrone sur minéraux, un âge de 534±16 Ma (rapport initial de 0,70415±0,00004). Les valeurs basses des rapports initiaux de ces diverses roches suggèrent que les schistes de Chapada sont dérivés de matériaux mantelliques ou crustaux profonds et présentent les caractères des produits magmatiques associés aux arcs insulaires. Leur âge éo-cambrien, en contradiction avec l'âge mésoprotérozoïque admis jusqu'ici, permet de penser que l'activité magmatique pan-africaine/brésilienne dans le centre du Brésil a été plus intense que ce qu'on croyait jusqu'ici.     Introduction Guidelines for the treatment of steroid-dependent nephrotic syndrome (SDNS) and frequently relapsing nephrotic syndrome (FRNS) are lacking. Given the substantial impact of SDNS/FRNS on quality of life, strategies aiming to provide long-term remission while minimising treatment side effects are needed. Several studies confirm that rituximab is effective in preventing early relapses in SDNS/FRNS; however, the long-term relapse rate remains high (~70% at 2 years). This trial will assess the association of intravenous immunoglobulins (IVIgs) to rituximab in patients with SDNS/FRNS and inform clinicians on whether IVIg’s immunomodulatory properties can alter the course of the disease and reduce the use of immunosuppressive drugs and their side effects. Methods and analysis We conduct an open-label multicentre, randomised, parallel group in a 1:1 ratio, controlled, superiority trial to assess the safety and efficacy of a single infusion of rituximab followed by IVIg compared with rituximab alone in childhood-onset FRNS/SDNS. The primary outcome is the occurrence of first relapse within 24 months. Patients are allocated to receive either rituximab alone (375 mg/m²) or rituximab followed by IVIg, which includes an initial Ig dose of 2 g/kg, followed by 1.5 g/kg injections once a month for the following 5 months (maximum dose: 100 g). Ethics and dissemination The study has been approved by the ethics committee (Comité de Protection des Personnes) of Ouest I and authorised by the French drug regulatory agency (Agence Nationale de Sécurité du Médicament et des Produits de Santé). Results of the primary study and the secondary aims will be disseminated through peer-reviewed publications

    In Silico and In Vitro Investigations of the Mutability of Disease-Causing Missense Mutation Sites in Spermine Synthase

    Spermine synthase (SMS) is a key enzyme controlling the concentration of spermidine and spermine in the cell. The importance of SMS is manifested by the fact that single missense mutations were found to cause Snyder-Robinson Syndrome (SRS). At the same time, currently there are no non-synonymous single nucleoside polymorphisms, nsSNPs (harmless mutations), found in SMS, which may imply that the SMS does not tolerate amino acid substitutions, i.e. is not mutable.To investigate the mutability of the SMS, we carried out in silico analysis and in vitro experiments of the effects of amino acid substitutions at the missense mutation sites (G56, V132 and I150) that have been shown to cause SRS. Our investigation showed that the mutation sites have different degree of mutability depending on their structural micro-environment and involvement in the function and structural integrity of the SMS. It was found that the I150 site does not tolerate any mutation, while V132, despite its key position at the interface of SMS dimer, is quite mutable. The G56 site is in the middle of the spectra, but still quite sensitive to charge residue replacement.The performed analysis showed that mutability depends on the detail of the structural and functional factors and cannot be predicted based on conservation of wild type properties alone. Also, harmless nsSNPs can be expected to occur even at sites at which missense mutations were found to cause diseases

    BACKGROUND: Distal renal tubular acidosis (dRTA), due to impaired acid secretion in the urine, can lead to severe long-term consequences. Standard of care (SoC) oral alkalizers, requiring several daily intakes, are currently used to restore normal plasma bicarbonate levels. A new prolonged-release formulation, ADV7103, has been developed to achieve a sustained effect with an improved dosing scheme. METHODS: In a multicenter, open-label, non-inferiority trial (n = 37), patients with dRTA were switched from SoC to ADV7103. Mean plasma bicarbonate values and proportion of responders during steady state therapy with both treatments were compared, as were other blood and urine parameters, as well as acceptability, tolerability, and safety. RESULTS: When switching from SoC to ADV7103, the number of daily intakes was reduced from a median of three to twice daily. Mean plasma bicarbonate was increased and non-inferiority of ADV7103 was demonstrated (p < 0.0001, per protocol), as was statistical superiority (p = 0.0008, intention to treat [ITT]), and the response rate increased from 43 to 90% with ADV7103 (p < 0.001, ITT). Urine calcium/citrate ratio was reduced below the threshold for risk of lithogenesis with ADV7103 in 56% of previously non-responders with SoC (p = 0.021, ITT). Palatability was improved (difference [95% CI] of 25 [10.7, 39.2] mm) and gastrointestinal discomfort was reduced (difference [95% CI] of - 14.2 [- 25.9, - 2.6] mm) with ADV7103. CONCLUSIONS: Plasma bicarbonate levels and response rate were significantly higher with ADV7103 than with SoC. Urine calcium/citrate ratio, palatability, and gastrointestinal safety were significantly improved, supporting the use of ADV7103 as first-line treatment for dRTA.     Alzheimer's Disease: a Review of its Visual System Neuropathology. Optical Coherence Tomography-a Potential Role As a Study Tool in Vivo

    Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a prevalent, long-term progressive degenerative disorder with great social impact. It is currently thought that, in addition to neurodegeneration, vascular changes also play a role in the pathophysiology of the disease. Visual symptoms are frequent and are an early clinical manifestation; a number of psychophysiologic changes occur in visual function, including visual field defects, abnormal contrast sensitivity, abnormalities in color vision, depth perception deficits, and motion detection abnormalities. These visual changes were initially believed to be solely due to neurodegeneration in the posterior visual pathway. However, evidence from pathology studies in both animal models of AD and humans has demonstrated that neurodegeneration also takes place in the anterior visual pathway, with involvement of the retinal ganglion cells' (RGCs) dendrites, somata, and axons in the optic nerve. These studies additionally showed that patients with AD have changes in retinal and choroidal microvasculature. Pathology findings have been corroborated in in-vivo assessment of the retina and optic nerve head (ONH), as well as the retinal and choroidal vasculature. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) in particular has shown great utility in the assessment of these changes, and it may become a useful tool for early detection and monitoring disease progression in AD.
