High-temperature bearing-cage materials
Evaluation tests conducted at temperatures of 500 and 700 degrees F reveal that S-Monel and AISI M-1 steel are suitable as high temperature cage materials for precision bearings. The area of the wear scar in the cage pocket that developed during the test was used as the measure of wear
Short-term hot-hardness characteristics of five case hardened steels
Short-term hot-hardness studies were performed with carburized and hardened AISI 8620, CBS 1000, CBS 1000M, CBS 600, and Vasco X-2 steels. Case and core hardness measurements were made at temperatures from 294 to 811 K (70 to 1000 F). The data were compared with data for high-speed tool steels and AISI 52100. The materials tested can be ranked as follows in order of decreasing hot-hardness retention: (1) Vasco X-2; equivalent to through-hardened tool steels up to 644 K (700 F) above which Vasco X-2 is inferior; (2) CBS 1000, (3) CBS 1000M; (4) CBS 6000; better hardness retention at elevated temperatures than through-hardened AISI 52100; and (5) AISI 8620. For the carburized steels, the change in hardness with temperature of the case and core are similar for a given material. The short-term hot hardness of these materials can be predicted with + or - 1 point Rockwell C
Cellular solid behaviour of liquid crystal colloids. 2. Mechanical properties
This paper presents the results of a rheological study of thermotropic
nematic colloids aggregated into cellular structures. Small sterically
stabilised PMMA particles dispersed in a liquid crystal matrix densely pack on
cell interfaces, but reversibly mix with the matrix when the system is heated
above Tni. We obtain a remarkably high elastic modulus, G'~10^5 Pa, which is a
nearly linear function of particle concentration. A characteristic yield stress
is required to disrupt the continuity of cellular structure and liquify the
response. The colloid aggregation in a ``poor nematic'' MBBA has the same
cellular morphology as in the ``good nematic'' 5CB, but the elastic strength is
at least an order of magnitude lower. These findings are supported by
theoretical arguments based on the high surface tension interfaces of a
foam-like cellular system, taking into account the local melting of nematic
liquid and the depletion locking of packed particles on interfaces.Comment: Latex 2e (EPJ style) EPS figures included (poor quality to comply

Specialisation : pro and anti-globalizing 1990-2002
Specialization alters the incidence of trade costs to buyers and sellers, with pro-and
anti-globalizing effects on 76 countries from 1990-2002. The structural gravity model
yields measures of Constructed Home Bias and the Total Factor Productivity effect of
changing incidence. A bit more than half the world's countries experience declining
constructed home bias and rising real output while the remainder of countries experi-
ence rising home bias and falling real output. The effects are big for the outliers. A
novel test of the structural gravity model restrictions shows it comes very close in an
economic sense
Transverse modulational instability of partially incoherent soliton stripes
Based on the Wigner distribution approach, an analysis of the effect of
partial incoherence on the transverse instability of soliton structures in
nonlinear Kerr media is presented. It is explicitly shown, that for a
Lorentzian incoherence spectrum the partial incoherence gives rise to a damping
which counteracts, and tends to suppress, the transverse instability growth.
However, the general picture is more complicated and it is shown that the
effect of the partial incoherence depends crucially on the form of the
incoherence spectrum. In fact, for spectra with finite rms-width, the partial
incoherence may even increase both the growth rate and the range of unstable,
transverse wave numbers.Comment: 5 pages, submitted to Phys. Rev.
Gold Standard Gravity
This paper provides striking confirmation of the restrictions of the structural gravity model of trade. Structural forces predicted by theory explain 95% of the variation of the fixed effects used to control for them in the recent gravity literature, fixed effects that in principle could reflect other forces. This validation opens avenues to inferring unobserved sectoral activity and multilateral resistance variables by equating fixed effects with structural gravity counterparts. Our findings also provide important validation of a host of general equilibrium comparative static exercises based on the structural gravity model.
Rolling-element bearings: A review of the state of the art
Some of the research conducted which has brought rolling-element technology to its present state is discussed. Areas touched upon are material effects, processing variables, operating variables, design optimization, lubricant effects and lubrication methods. Finally, problem areas are discussed in relation to the present state-of-the-art and anticipated requirements
Quantum Cosmological Relational Model of Shape and Scale in 1-d
Relational particle models are useful toy models for quantum cosmology and
the problem of time in quantum general relativity. This paper shows how to
extend existing work on concrete examples of relational particle models in 1-d
to include a notion of scale. This is useful as regards forming a tight analogy
with quantum cosmology and the emergent semiclassical time and hidden time
approaches to the problem of time. This paper shows furthermore that the
correspondence between relational particle models and classical and quantum
cosmology can be strengthened using judicious choices of the mechanical
potential. This gives relational particle mechanics models with analogues of
spatial curvature, cosmological constant, dust and radiation terms. A number of
these models are then tractable at the quantum level. These models can be used
to study important issues 1) in canonical quantum gravity: the problem of time,
the semiclassical approach to it and timeless approaches to it (such as the
naive Schrodinger interpretation and records theory). 2) In quantum cosmology,
such as in the investigation of uniform states, robustness, and the qualitative
understanding of the origin of structure formation.Comment: References and some more motivation adde
High-temperature bearing lubricants
Synthetic paraffinic oil lubricates ball bearings at temperatures in the 600 degrees F range. The lubricant contains antiwear and antifoam additives, is thermally stable in the high temperature range, but requires protection from oxygen
