    Searching in Unstructured Overlays Using Local Knowledge and Gossip

    This paper analyzes a class of dissemination algorithms for the discovery of distributed contents in Peer-to-Peer unstructured overlay networks. The algorithms are a mix of protocols employing local knowledge of peers' neighborhood and gossip. By tuning the gossip probability and the depth k of the k-neighborhood of which nodes have information, we obtain different dissemination protocols employed in literature over unstructured P2P overlays.     Environmental concerns have been motivating the use of renewable energysources to meet sustainable requirements. In this context, concentrated solarpower driven by organic Rankine cycles has been classified as an up-andcomingtechnology to generate energy under low and moderate temperatures.In order to have a better understanding of the availability and utilization of thisenergy resource, the purpose of the present study is to perform acomprehensive energetic, exergetic and heat transfer analysis of a 200 kWsolar organic Rankine cycle through the presentation of the energy and exergyefficiencies and losses for each component; the exergy destruction at all stagesof the process; and the heat transfer behavior along the receiver. The thermalmodel was developed in Engineering Equation Solver and validated withliterature data. The solar collector was operated with Therminol 66 and theworking fluid employed in the power block was cyclohexane. The energeticefficiencies achieved in the solar field, power block, and overall system were64.97; 21.36; and 13.87 %, respectively. Considering the exergetic efficiencies,they were 27.37; 54.45; and 14.89 %, respectively. The solar resource variationshowed that the higher DNI value, the better the system performance

    High-Resolution Spectroscopy of FUors

    High-resolution spectroscopy was obtained of the FUors FU Ori and V1057 Cyg between 1995 and 2002 with SOFIN at NOT and with HIRES at Keck I. During those years FU Ori remained about 1 mag. (in B) below its 1938-39 maximum brightness, but V1057 Cyg (B ~ 10.5 at peak in 1970-71) faded from about 13.5 to 14.9 and then recovered slightly. Their photospheric spectra resemble a rotating G0 Ib supergiant, with v_eq sin i = 70 km/s for FU Ori and 55 km/s for V1057 Cyg. As V1057 Cyg faded, P Cyg structure in Halpha and the IR CaII lines strengthened and a complex shortward-displaced shell spectrum increased in strength, disappeared in 1999, and reappeared in 2001. Night-to-night changes in the wind structure of FU Ori show evidence of sporadic infall. The strength of P Cyg absorption varied cyclically with a period of 14.8 days, with phase stability maintained over 3 seasons, and is believed to be the rotation period. The structure of the photospheric lines also varies cyclically, but with a period of 3.54 days. A similar variation may be present in V1057 Cyg. As V1057 Cyg has faded, the emission lines of a pre-existing low-excitation chromosphere have emerged, so we believe the `line doubling' in V1057 Cyg is produced by these central emission cores in the absorption lines, not by orbital motion in an inclined Keplerian disk. No dependence of v_eq sin i on wavelength or excitation potential was detected in either star, again contrary to expectation for a self-luminous accretion disk. Nor are critical lines in the near infrared accounted for by synthetic disk spectra. A rapidly rotating star near the edge of stability (Larson 1980), can better explain these observations.     Ziziphus lotus (L.) Lam. as a source of health promoting products: metabolomic profile, antioxidant and tyrosinase inhibitory activities

    The methanolic extract of the stem bark of a wild species of jujube, Ziziphus lotus (L.) Lam., growing in Sicily, was chemically and biologically investigated. The chemical profile was defined by UHPLC-HR-ESI-Orbitrap/MS analysis whereas antioxidant and tyrosinase inhibitory activities were investigated by in vitro assays. The extract showed a high total phenolic and flavonoid content (TPC = 271.65 GAE/g and TFC = 188.11 RE/g extract). Metabolomic analysis revealed a rich phytocomplex characterized by phenols, cyclopeptide alkaloids, and triterpenoid saponins, some of which here detected for the first time. The mushroom tyrosinase inhibition assay displayed that the methanolic extract efficiently inhibits the monophenolase and diphenolase activity. Furthermore, the extract showed a strong ability to scavenge DPPH, a good Fe3+ reducing antioxidant power, in addition to a Fe2+ chelating activity. Taken together, these results suggest possible novel applications of wild jujube stem bark as a source of potential skin-care agents with several uses in pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries

    The Importance of Cerebellar Connectivity on Simulated Brain Dynamics

    The brain shows a complex multiscale organization that prevents a direct understanding of how structure, function and dynamics are correlated. To date, advances in neural modeling offer a unique opportunity for simulating global brain dynamics by embedding empirical data on different scales in a mathematical framework. The Virtual Brain (TVB) is an advanced data-driven model allowing to simulate brain dynamics starting from individual subjects’ structural and functional connectivity obtained, for example, from magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The use of TVB has been limited so far to cerebral connectivity but here, for the first time, we have introduced cerebellar nodes and interconnecting tracts to demonstrate the impact of cerebro-cerebellar loops on brain dynamics. Indeed, the matching between the empirical and simulated functional connectome was significantly improved when including the cerebro-cerebellar loops. This positive result should be considered as a first step, since issues remain open about the best strategy to reconstruct effective structural connectivity and the nature of the neural mass or mean-field models generating local activity in the nodes. For example, signal processing is known to differ remarkably between cortical and cerebellar microcircuits. Tackling these challenges is expected to further improve the predictive power of functional brain activity simulations, using TVB or other similar tools, in explaining not just global brain dynamics but also the role of cerebellum in determining brain states in physiological conditions and in the numerous pathologies affecting the cerebro-cerebellar loop

    Organic film thickness influence on the bias stress instability in Sexithiophene Field Effect Transistors

    In this paper, the dynamics of bias stress phenomenon in Sexithiophene (T6) Field Effect Transistors (FETs) has been investigated. T6 FETs have been fabricated by vacuum depositing films with thickness from 10 nm to 130 nm on Si/SiO2 substrates. After the T6 film structural analysis by X-Ray diffraction and the FET electrical investigation focused on carrier mobility evaluation, bias stress instability parameters have been estimated and discussed in the context of existing models. By increasing the film thickness, a clear correlation between the stress parameters and the structural properties of the organic layer has been highlighted.     We report that entangled pairs of quantum clocks (non-degenerate quantum bits) can be used as a specialized detector for precisely measuring difference of proper-times that each constituent quantum clock experiences. We describe why the proposed scheme would be more precise in the measurement of proper-time difference than a scheme of two-separate-quantum-clocks.     SERUM IONIZED MAGNESIUM IN DIABETIC OLDER PERSONS

    Objective. Several alterations of magnesium metabolism have been associated with type 2 diabetes pathophysiology, a condition particularly frequent in older persons. We aimed to evaluate serum total (Mg-tot) and serum ionized magnesium (Mg-ion) in older persons with type 2 diabetes in order to explore clinically applicable methods for the detection of magnesium deficit. Material/Methods: Mg-tot and Mg-ion were measured in 105 fasting subjects with type 2 diabetes (mean age: 71.10.8 years; M/F: 45/60) and in 100 age-matched non-diabetic control persons (mean age: 72.20.8 years; M/F: 42/58). Results: Mg-ion concentrations were significantly lower in diabetic persons compared with controls (0.490.05 mmol/L vs. 0.550.05 mmol/L; p<0.001). Mg-tot was also slightly but significantly lower in diabetic patients (0.820.007 mmol/L vs. 0.840.006 mmol/L; p<0.05). There was an almost complete overlap in the values of Mg-tot in older diabetic patients and controls; conversely, 44.8% of diabetic patients had Mg-ion values below 0.47 mmol/L, while none of the controls did. After adjustment for age, sex, BMI, and triglycerides, Mg-tot was significantly associated with FBG in all the participants (p<0.05) and Mg-ion was significantly associated with FBG in all the participants (p<0.01) and with HbA1c in diabetic participants (p<0.001). Conclusions: Alterations of magnesium serum concentrations are common in type 2 diabetic older adults; Mg-ion evaluation may help to identify subclinical magnesium depletion (i.e. in patients with normal Mg-tot); the close independent associations of Mg-tot and Mg-ion with FBG and with HbA1c reinforce the possible link between magnesium homeostasis and altered glucose metabolism
