Spectral optical monitoring of the double peaked emission line AGN Arp 102B: II. Variability of the broad line properties
We investigate a long-term (26 years, from 1987 to 2013) variability in the
broad spectral line properties of the radio galaxy Arp 102B, an active galaxy
with broad double-peaked emission lines. We use observations presented in Paper
I (Shapovalova et al. 2013) in the period from 1987 to 2011, and a new set of
observations performed in 2012--2013. To explore the BLR geometry, and clarify
some contradictions about the nature of the BLR in Arp 102B we explore
variations in the H and H line parameters during the monitored
period. We fit the broad lines with three broad Gaussian functions finding the
positions and intensities of the blue and red peaks in H and H.
Additionally we fit averaged line profiles with the disc model. We find that
the broad line profiles are double-peaked and have not been changed
significantly in shapes, beside an additional small peak that, from time to
time can be seen in the blue part of the H line. The positions of the
blue and red peaks { have not changed significantly during the monitored
period. The H line is broader than H line in the monitored
period. The disc model is able to reproduce the H and H broad
line profiles, however, observed variability in the line parameters are not in
a good agreement with the emission disc hypothesis. It seems that the BLR of
Arp 102B has a disc-like geometry, but the role of an outflow can also play an
important role in observed variation of the broad line properties.Comment: 17 pages, Accepted for publication in A&
Discovery of a thin stellar stream in the SLAMS survey
We report the discovery of a thin stellar stream - which we name the Jet
stream - crossing the constellations of Hydra and Pyxis. The discovery was made
in data from the SLAMS survey, which comprises deep and imaging for a
square degree region above the Galactic disc performed by the CTIO Blanco
+ DECam. SLAMS photometric catalogues will be made publicly available. The
stream is approximately 0.18 degrees wide and 10 degrees long, though it is
truncated by the survey footprint. Its colour-magnitude diagram is consistent
with an old, metal-poor stellar population at a heliocentric distance of
approximately 29 kpc. We corroborate this measurement by identifying a
spatially coincident overdensity of likely blue horizontal branch stars at the

At the survey limits::discovery of the Aquarius 2 dwarf galaxy in the VST ATLAS and the SDSS data
We announce the discovery of the Aquarius~2 dwarf galaxy, a new distant
satellite of the Milky Way, detected on the fringes of the VST ATLAS and the
SDSS surveys. The object was originally identified as an overdensity of Red
Giant Branch stars, but chosen for subsequent follow-up based on the presence
of a strong Blue Horizontal Branch, which was also used to measure its distance
of kpc. Using deeper imaging from the IMACS camera on the 6.5m Baade
and spectroscopy with DEIMOS on Keck, we measured the satellite's half-light
radius arcmin, or pc at this distance, and its stellar
velocity dispersion of km s. With mag
arcsec and , the new satellite lies close to two important
detection limits: one in surface brightness; and one in luminosity at a given

Effect of aspirin on the diagnostic accuracy of the faecal immunochemical test for colorectal advanced neoplasia
Background: Aspirin (ASA) is a drug that can cause gastrointestinal lesions and symptoms. Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the most prevalent type of cancer in Western countries. We assessed the effect of aspirin on the diagnostic accuracy of the faecal immunochemical test (FIT) for CRC and/or advanced neoplasia (AN) in patients undergoing colonoscopy for gastrointestinal symptoms.
Methods: We conducted a prospective multicentre observational study of diagnostic tests that included patients with gastrointestinal symptoms undergoing colonoscopy between March 2012 and 2014 (the COLONPREDICT study). Symptoms were assessed and a FIT and blood tests assessing haemoglobin and carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) levels were performed.
Results: The study included 3052 patients: A total of 2567 did not take aspirin (non-user group) and 485 (16%) took aspirin (user group). Continuous treatment with ASA did not change the AUC (0.88, 0.82; p = 0.06), sensitivity (92%, 88%; p = 0.5) or specificity (71%, 67%; p = 0.2) of the FIT for CRC detection. Similarly, we found no differences in the AUC (0.81, 0.79; p = 0.6), sensitivity (74%, 75.5%; p = 0.3) or specificity (76%, 73.6%; p = 0.3) for AN detection. Patients with an aspirin use of = 300 mg/day had a lower prevalence of AN and the sensitivity, specificity and AUC for AN for these patients were 54%, 68% and 0.66, significantly lower than for the non-user group (p = 0.03).
Conclusions: Aspirin does not modify the diagnostic accuracy of FIT for CRC and/or AN in patients with gastrointestinal symptoms. Aspirin use of = 300 mg/day decreases the accuracy of the test
Probing the Outer Galactic Halo with RR Lyrae from the Catalina Surveys
We present analysis of 12,227 type-ab RR Lyraes (RRLs) found among the 200 million public light curves in Catalina Surveys Data Release 1. These stars span the largest volume of the Milky Way ever surveyed with RRLs, covering ~20,000 deg2 of the sky (0° 1500 of the RRLs. Using the accurate distances derived for the RRLs, we show the paths of the Sagittarius tidal streams crossing the sky at heliocentric distances from 20 to 60 kpc. By selecting samples of Galactic halo RRLs, we compare their velocity, metallicity, and distance with predictions from a recent detailed N-body model of the Sagittarius system. We find that there are some significant differences between the distances and structures predicted and our observations
Spectral Optical Monitoring of the Narrow Line Seyfert 1 galaxy Ark 564
We present the results of a long-term (1999--2010) spectral optical
monitoring campaign of the active galactic nucleus (AGN) Ark 564, which shows a
strong Fe II line emission in the optical. This AGN is a narrow line Seyfert 1
(NLS1) galaxies, a group of AGNs with specific spectral characteristics. We
analyze the light curves of the permitted Ha, Hb, optical Fe II line fluxes,
and the continuum flux in order to search for a time lag between them.
Additionally, in order to estimate the contribution of iron lines from
different multiplets, we fit the Hb and Fe II lines with a sum of Gaussian
components. We found that during the monitoring period the spectral variation
(F_max/F_min) of Ark 564 was between 1.5 for Ha to 1.8 for the Fe II lines. The
correlation between the Fe II and Hb flux variations is of higher significance
than that of Ha and Hb (whose correlation is almost absent). The permitted-line
profiles are Lorentzian-like, and did not change shape during the monitoring
period. We investigated, in detail, the optical Fe II emission and found
different degrees of correlation between the Fe II emission arising from
different spectral multiplets and the continuum flux. The relatively weak and
different degrees of correlations between permitted lines and continuum fluxes
indicate a rather complex source of ionization of the broad line emission
