    Motion-Induced Magnetic Resonance of Rb Atoms in a Periodic Magnetostatic Field

    We demonstrate that transitions between Zeeman-split sublevels of Rb atoms are resonantly induced by the motion of the atoms (velocity: about 100 m/s) in a periodic magnetostatic field (period: 1 mm) when the Zeeman splitting corresponds to the frequency of the magnetic field experienced by the moving atoms. A circularly polarized laser beam polarizes Rb atoms with a velocity selected using the Doppler effect and detects their magnetic resonance in a thin cell, to which the periodic field is applied with the arrays of parallel current-carrying wires.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures; minor corrections, Ref.     Intercultural Competence Assessment: What Are Its Key Dimensions Across Assessment Tools?

    Prior research has identified different dimensions of intercultural competence (IC). However, its focus remains inconsistent across different disciplines and contexts. Existing assessment tools do not focus on all dimensions of Intercultural Competence. Instead, each focuses only on a subset of the IC dimensions. To fill this gap, this study aims (1) to provide a review of currently available assessment tools for IC and (2) to identify a comprehensive list of the key dimensions of IC. This will help researchers agree on a unified definition of IC and develop a measurement of IC that is applicable across contexts and disciplines. The authors find that a comprehensive IC definition and measurement should take into account cognitive (culture-specific knowledge, attitude, open-mindedness/ flexibility, critical thinking, motivation, and personal autonomy), affective (cultural empathy and emotional stability/control), and behavioral (experience, social initiative, leadership, and communication) dimensions

    Hyperfine structure of antiprotonic helium revealed by a laser-microwave-laser resonance method

    Using a newly developed laser-microwave-laser resonance method, we observed a pair of microwave transitions between hyperfine levels of the (n,L)=(37,35)(n,L)=(37,35) state of antiprotonic helium. This experiment confirms the quadruplet hyperfine structure due to the interaction of the antiproton orbital angular momentum, the electron spin and the antiproton spin as predicted by Bakalov and Korobov. The measured frequencies of νHF+=12.89596±0.00034\nu_{\text HF}^+ =12.89596 \pm 0.00034 GHz and νHF−=12.92467±0.00029\nu_{\text HF}^- =12.92467 \pm 0.00029 GHz agree with recent theoretical calculations on a level of 6×10−5 6 \times10^{-5}.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, 1 tabl

    CD25+ CD4+ T cells, expanded with dendritic cells presenting a single autoantigenic peptide, suppress autoimmune diabetes

    In the nonobese diabetic (NOD) mouse model of type 1 diabetes, the immune system recognizes many autoantigens expressed in pancreatic islet β cells. To silence autoimmunity, we used dendritic cells (DCs) from NOD mice to expand CD25+ CD4+ suppressor T cells from BDC2.5 mice, which are specific for a single islet autoantigen. The expanded T cells were more suppressive in vitro than their freshly isolated counterparts, indicating that DCs from autoimmune mice can increase the number and function of antigen-specific, CD25+ CD4+ regulatory T cells. Importantly, only 5,000 expanded CD25+ CD4+ BDC2.5 T cells could block autoimmunity caused by diabetogenic T cells in NOD mice, whereas 105 polyclonal, CD25+ CD4+ T cells from NOD mice were inactive. When islets were examined in treated mice, insulitis development was blocked at early (3 wk) but not later (11 wk) time points. The expanded CD25+ CD4+ BDC2.5 T cells were effective even if administered 14 d after the diabetogenic T cells. Our data indicate that DCs can generate CD25+ CD4+ T cells that suppress autoimmune disease in vivo. This might be harnessed as a new avenue for immunotherapy, especially because CD25+ CD4+ regulatory cells responsive to a single autoantigen can inhibit diabetes mediated by reactivity to multiple antigens

    Virtual light-by-light scattering and the g factor of a bound electron

    The contribution of the light-by-light diagram to the g factor of electron and muon bound in Coulomb field is obtained. For electron in a ground state, our results are in good agreement with the results of other authors obtained numerically for large Z. For relatively small Z our results have essentially higher accuracy as compared to the previous ones.     We study the momentum and the quark mass dependence of the axial nucleon to Delta(1232) transition form factors in the framework of non-relativistic chiral effective field theory to leading-one-loop order.     Neutron Rich Hypernuclei in Chiral Soliton Model

    The binding energies of neutron rich strangeness S=−1S=-1 hypernuclei are estimated in the chiral soliton approach using the bound state rigid oscillator version of the SU(3) quantization model. Additional binding of strange hypernuclei in comparison with nonstrange neutron rich nuclei takes place at not large values of atomic (baryon) numbers, A=B≤∼10A=B\leq\sim 10. This effect becomes stronger with increasing isospin of nuclides, and for "nuclear variant" of the model with rescaled Skyrme constant ee. Total binding energies of (Lambda)He-8 and recently discovered (Lambda)H-6 satisfactorily agree with experimental data. Hypernuclei (Lambda)H-7, (Lambda)He-9 are predicted to be bound stronger in comparison with their nonstrange analogues H-7, He-9; hypernuclei (Lambda)Li-10, (Lambda)Li-11, (Lambda)Be-12, (Lambda)Be-13, etc. are bound stronger in the nuclear variant of the model.Comment: 8 pages, 4 tables; amendments made, data on binding energy of (Lambda)He-8 and references added; prepared for the conferences Quarks-2012 and HYP201
