    Enhancing student and graduate employability in the hospitality industry: A video project

    Employment interviews are designed to judge the qualifications and desirability of a candidate for a job. Research shows that interviews are incredibly important in getting the right job. A study conducted by the Bureau of National Affairs pinpointed the most important factors in hiring applicants, with employment interviews being the single most important factor in getting a job (Elfner, 2006). Hospitality firms are placing greater emphasis on the ability of graduates to fit within their businesses (Pittaway & Thedham, 2005). Even though qualifications and skills are vital for selection, candidates should know how to set themselves apart from other candidates in interviews, and this can only be accomplished through thoughtful interview preparation (Chastain, 2002). The purpose of this study was to familiarize hospitality students and graduates of high schools, community colleges, and universities with the pre-interview preparation process. As a result of this qualitative action research, a practical video guide, titled You’re Hired, was developed with appropriate handouts

    Prioritising Research Agenda For E-Commerce In Malaysia

    The recent advent of World Wide Web has changed the traditional marketing paradigm in a dramatic way. Under a computer-mediated marketing framework the operations are no longer controlled by boundaries and time constraints. The new paradigm provides firms the whole wired world as potential market to capture. This is the underlying rationale for the Malaysian e-commerce policy or marketing in a "computer-mediated-environment" in Malaysia. Although, the concept of e-commerce is relatively new in this country, but, it was widely accepted marketing medium among the developed nations. Whether Malaysia is able to reap the benefits of e-commerce largely depends on various factors ranging from the infrastructures, the skill base, the critical mass of internet users, legal policy and so on. Understanding the nature of the relationship and the significance of these factors require a good amount of research in the industry perspectives. This paper attempts to provide some guidelines about the research priorities in marketing of Malaysian produce and products under a computer-mediated-environment; taking into account the local and peculiarities of the firms and consumers' behaviour. In this respect the current paper draws literatures about e-commerce experiences of other countries for the purpose of benchmarking. The preliminary conclusion drawn from these literatures suggest that e-marketing outcomes are major reduction in transaction costs and an increase in productivity; which in turn radically change the traditional market structure, behaviour and performance framework. While it is envisaged that the private sector will take the lead role in the development of e-marketing in Malaysia, the government has a bigger role in ensuring its sustainability. The major research issues in economics and marketing are: the competitiveness of the related industries to allow higher investment in bandwidth and high-technology, integration of physical and online marketing, the economics of network management, characteristics and perception of the community on e-commerce, market and commercial governance, the current and future skill of the community, monitoring the changes in marketing functions and intermediary roles and providing macro indicators to measure the market

    Fock space exploration by angle resolved transmission through quantum diffraction grating of cold atoms in an optical lattice

    Light transmission or diffraction from different quantum phases of cold atoms in an optical lattice has recently come up as a useful tool to probe such ultra cold atomic systems. The periodic nature of the optical lattice potential closely resembles the structure of a diffraction grating in real space, but loaded with a strongly correlated quantum many body state which interacts with the incident electromagnetic wave, a feature that controls the nature of the light transmission or dispersion through such quantum medium. In this paper we show that as one varies the relative angle between the cavity mode and the optical lattice, the peak of the transmission spectrum through such cavity also changes reflecting the statistical distribution of the atoms in the illuminated sites. Consequently the angle resolved transmission spectrum of such quantum diffraction grating can provide a plethora of information about the Fock space structure of the many body quantum state of ultra cold atoms in such an optical cavity that can be explored in current state of the art experiments.Comment: 40 double spaced, single column pages, 40 .eps figures, accepted for publication in Physical Review

    Antibacterial property of neem nanoemulsion against Vibrio anguillarium infection in Asian sea bass (Lates calcarifer)

    1222-1226Fish vibriosis is among the most common diseases that is caused by a bacteria belonging to the genus Vibrio (Vibrio anguillarium). It causes considerable economic loss in the commercial cultivation of Asian sea bass (Lates calcarifer). The resistance of microorganisms to antibiotics has resulted in a growing need for developing a new antibacterial therapy that is effective in aquaculture. The aim of this study is to develop neem nanoemulsion with antibacterial activity against V. anguillarium to identify a possible alternative to the commonly used antibiotics in aquaculture. Neem nanoemulsion was prepared and the effectiveness was studied both in vitro and in vivo (agar well diffusion assay and artificial infection). Injection and immersion challenge of neem nanoemulsion formulated the fish less susceptible to V. anguillarium infection. The results confirmed the potential use of neem nanoemulsion as a source of antibacterial compounds or as a health-promoting medicine for fish culture

    Evaluation of a Cold Staining Method for Acid-Fast Bacilli in Sputum

    Comparison between the Ziehl-Neelscn staining method for acid-fast bacilli, applied with and without heating, was carried out in a controlled investigation using smears prepared from 306 sputum samples collected prior to treatment from suspected cases of pulmonary tuberculosis. Smear and culture positively were graded and the colour intensity of bacilli recorded. Results showed that the chance corrected agreement (Kappa) between Z-N and cold methods was only 78%. The sensitivity of the Z-N and cold methods were 84% and 77% respectively when compared with culture results. Assuming 10% smear positivity among symptomatics reporting to Peripheral Health Institutions (PHIs), the positive predictive value of the cold method was very low(53%). When compared to culture, the positive predictive value is 71% for the Z-N method and 57% for the cold method for a symptomatic population with 15% culture positivity. In the absence of heating. penetration of the stain was significantly reduced and consequently the number of bacilli detected was less. The inability to take the stain without heating was seen in smears from all grades of culture positive samples: thus even heavy positives were missed by the cold method. The evaluation of the cold method against the standard Z-N method highlights its limitations and demonstrates that it is not as reliable as the standard Z-N method

    Sputum conversion at the end of intensive phase of Category-1 regimen in the treatment of pulmonary tuberculosis patients with diabetes mellitus or HIV infection: An analysis of risk factors

    Background & objectives: New smear-positive pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) patients in the Revised National Tuberculosis Control Programme (RNTCP) are treated with a 6-month short-course chemotherapy (SCC) regimen irrespective of co-morbid conditions. We undertook this retrospective analysis to compare sputum conversion rates (smear, culture) at the end of intensive phase (IP) of Category-1 regimen among patients admitted to concurrent controlled clinical trials: pulmonary tuberculosis alone (PTB) or with type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM-TB) or HIV infection (HIV-TB), and to identify the risk factors influencing sputum conversion. Methods: In this retrospective analysis sputum conversion rates at the end of intensive phase (IP) in three concurrent studies undertaken among PTB, DM-TB and HIV-TB patients, during 1998 – 2002 at the Tuberculosis Research Centre (TRC), Chennai, were compared. Sputum smears were examined by fluorescent microscopy. HIV infected patients did not receive anti-retroviral treatment (ART). Patients with DM were treated with oral hypoglycaemic drugs or insulin (sc). Results: The study population included 98, 92 and 88 patients in the PTB, DM-TB and HIV-TB studies. At the end of IP the smear conversion (58, 61, and 62%) and culture conversion (86, 88 and 92%) rates were similar in the three groups respectively. The variables associated with lack of sputum smear or culture conversion were age >45 yr, higher pre-treatment smear and culture grading, and extent of the radiographic involvement. Interpretation & conclusions: Our findings confirm that the current policy of the control programme to treat all pulmonary TB patients with or with out co-morbid conditions with Category-I regimen appears to be appropriate

    Abstract: Health care is the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease, illness, injury, and other physical and mental impairments in humans. Health care is delivered by practitioners in medicine, chiropractic, dentistry, nursing, pharmacy, allied health, and other care providers. E-Health tools allow the construction of patientcentric Healthcare Service Providers that aim to support patients to access health related information, to prevent their possible diseases and to monitor their health status. The system builds a profile for each patient and uses it to detect Healthcare Service Providers delivering E-Health services potentially capable of satisfying the patient needs. The proposed system is HL7-aware represents both patient and service information according to the directives of HL7, the information management standard adopted in medical context. Once patients submit a query the proposed system retrieves a set of relevant services which satisfy the need of the patient. However EHealth is evolving into entities such as mobile health which focus on providing healthcare to people anywhere, anytime using broadband and wireless mobile technologies

    Estimation of loan portfolio risk on the basis of Markov chain model

    A change of shares of credits portfolio is described by Markov chain with discrete time. A credit state is determined on as an accessory to some group of credits depending on presence of indebtedness and its terms. We use a model with discrete time and fix the system state through identical time intervals - once a month. It is obvious that the matrix of transitive probabilities is known incompletely. Various approaches to the matrix estimation are studied and methods of forecast the portfolio risk are proposed. The portfolio risk is set as a share of problematic loans.
