    Peak expiratory flow rate; the effect of smoking on younger & middle aged males

    A total of 80 male subjects in age group of 20-50 years were selected for the purpose of the study. They were divided in two groups, smokers and non smokers. Each group subdivided into age groups of 20-35 and 36-50 yrs. The criteria for smoking was about 5-10 cigarettes per day since 6-12 months. Peak Expiratory Flow Rate (P.E.F.R.) was determined by using Wright’s peak flow meter. The results showed that in Non-Smoker of age group 20-35 years, (n= 30) the mean PEFR value was 535±50 L/min, whereas in age group 36-50 years, (n=15) the mean P.E.F.R value was 515±50 L/min. In Smokers of age group 20-35 years, (n=10) mean P.E.F.R. value was 374±128 L/min whereas in age group 36-50 years, (n=25) mean P.E.F.R. value was 357±86 L/min. This shows that in smokers P.E.F.R. value is lower compared to Non-smokers in both age groups and that P.E.F.R. is lower in the elder age group in comparison to younger age group

    The culture of marine finfish in cages was successfully initiated in Japan in 1950s and in South East Asia during 1970s. In the initial years of cage culture, fish seed for culture was collected from the wild. Recent developments in hatchery technology and seed production of commercially important marine finfish and shellfish have ensured the continuous supply of seed for mariculture practices. The disease control and health management are important issues for sustainable aquaculture. The disease occurrence causes major economic loss to aquaculture farmers. Production costs often increase due to disease outbreaks and treatment procedures followed to overcome death of fishes during culture. In natural aquatic environments, disease problems are unnoticed as diseased/weak/stressed fishes are easily removed by predators and very few occurrences of disease outbreaks are reported. Moreover in natural environment fish are not crowded as in captive culture conditions, which ultimately causes stress in fishes frequently

    Sea farming is a popular area of aquaculture practice throughout the world. In Asian countries, it is rapidly growing to meet the increasing demand of high value marine fishes. Although India has a tradition of aquaculture, sea farming ventures on commercial scale were lacking. In this context, Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute started open sea floating cage culture activities in 2006-07 with Department of Animal Husbandry, Dairying and Fisheries (DAHD&F), Government of India assistance. Indigenous cage of 15 m diameter was fabricated following Norwegian open sea floating cage design and launched at Visakhapatnam. There was a technical setback with the design of cage, and consultation with Indian Institute of Technology, West Bengal helped to overcome technical issues with the cage structure. Open sea floating cage diameter was reduced to 6 m and 14 new open sea floating cages were launched at Sutrapada (Gujarat), Vasai (Maharashtra), Mangalore (Karnataka), Cochin (Kerala), Pulicat (Tamil Nadu), Nellore, Kakinada, Baruva (Andhra Pradesh) and Balasore (Odisha) in participation with National Fisheries Development Board (NFDB)

    Tick borne haemoparasites and haemorickettsiales pose a major health risk to animals worldwide. The present study reports the development and validation of multiplex PCR to simultaneously detect the most prevalent tick borne pathogens infecting dogs in Kerala, South India. The assay targeting the small subunit ribosomal RNA genes of the organisms could amplify well demarcated amplicons of B. canis vogeli, B. gibsoni and E. canis. In the study population, which included both healthy dogs as well as those with clinical symptoms suggestive of the three infections under study, 46.6% animals were infected with one of the three pathogens, amongst which the occurrence of B. gibsoni was significantly the highest. Natural co-infections were also detected in nine dogs, which suggests the suitability of the assay to assist in the selection of pathogen specific treatment protocols.Krvni paraziti i rikecije podrijetlom iz krpelja glavna su opasnost za zdravlje životinja diljem svijeta. U ovom je istraživanju razvijen i validiran višestruki PCR za istodobno dokazivanje najčešćih uzročnika koje na pse prenose krpelji u Kerali u Južnoj Indiji. Malim ciljnim subjediničnim ribosomskim RNA mogli su proizvesti jasno razlučivi produkti specifični za B. canis vogeli, B. gibsoni i E. canis. U pretraživanoj populaciji koja je obuhvaćala zdrave pse i one s kliničkim znakovima, koji su upućivali na infekciju uzrokovanu jednim od spomenutih uzročnika, 46,6 % životinja bilo je inficirano jednim od njih triju. Infekcija vrstom B. gibsoni bila je znatno češća. Prirodna je koinfekcija dokazana u devet pasa, što potvrđuje prikladnost testa za dijagnostiku i njegovo značenje pri poduzimanju odgovarajućeg liječenja

    Outbreak of Fatal Subacute Bubaline Fasciolosis in Wayanad, Kerala, India

    Abstract: Present communication deals with a fatal outbreak of subacute fasciolosis in male buffalo calves in Wayanad district. During first week of February 2012, six out of 25 male buffalo calves aged 6-9 months, owned by a farmer residing near the dam site of Karappuzha, Wayanad district died suddenly during a period of 3-4 days. The animals were brought to Kerala 4 weeks back from Andhrapradesh for fattening. On post-mortem examination, the peritoneal cavity was filled with ascitic fluid. Liver was enlarged and large numbers of migrating flukes were observed. Snails collected from nearby water bodies released only echinostome cercariae. It was concluded that the infection occurred not from Kerala and might have happened from Andhrapradesh. Treatment with Triclabendazole at the dose rate of 24 mg/Kg body weight saved the rest of the animals

    Commonality in liquidity: An empirical examination of emerging order-driven equity and derivatives market

    Using a sample of actively traded stocks and options from emerging order-driven market, this study examines and provides satisfactory evidence for the existence of commonality in liquidity for both spot and derivatives market. For equities, the market- and industry-wide commonality remain strong even after controlling for market returns and individual firm volatility and for options after accounting for the underlying stock market liquidity and implied volatility. Compared to the stock market, options market exhibit an increased commonality in liquidity with market capitalization. Here, information asymmetry acts as an important microstructure related source of commonality in liquidity across markets. The findings are robust across call and put options with negligible evidence of cross-sectional error correlation for all the liquidity measures

    Mass envenomation during Ganesh idol immersion at Girgaum-Chowpathy beach, Mumbai, Maharashtra

    At the end of South-West monsoon along Mumbai coast a swarm of the box jelly fish, Chiropsoides buitendijki was observed during Ganesh idol immersion at Girgaum-Chowpathy beach, Mumbai on 10th September, 2013. The occurrence of such large number of jelly fishes coincided with Ganesh idol immersion, perhaps for the first time in Mumbai waters. Several devotees of Ganesh who congregated at Girgaum-Chowpathy beach for immersion ritual of Ganesh idol were stung by the jelly fish. According to the news paper reports, the devotees moved with the idol in ankledeep water for immersion and immediately thin tentacle-like threads pierced legs and ankles causing severe burning sensation
